The reason why I give a 4/5 is because of the customer service I received . When I called to place a phone order, I asked if there was anything similar to the California bowl (teriyaki chicken and 2 California rolls) as they no longer have it on the menu, the cashier who was on phone seemed like she was annoyed and actually did not help me with my request. I just wish she would have engaged more with me in finding a perfect dish for me. I ended up ordering the teriyaki bowl. When I arrive to the store, I see that they have all day specials that include teriyaki chicken, salad, egg roll, etc. for a cheaper price than the teriyaki chicken alone. Went here for the first time tonight. Ordered the Chicken Teriyaki with a bowl of Miso Soup to go. The person taking my order was very friendly and the service was pretty quick. They gave me a huge portion size so the price was well worth it as i'll have leftovers for tomorrow. This is the most unprofessional place ever. The food was average but the price was ridick. I can't speak for everyone else but i really do hate it when workers try to talk to me. This is not your average being friendly small talk. This is trying way too hard to be "friendly" if you guys know what i mean. First thing she did when my friends and i walked in was asking us if we were Korean, who the f does that? What was she going to do if we weren't? and why does it matter? When i reluctantly answered yes she went off in Korean and then she legit stepped away from the register and stood next to me, recommending EVERYTHING on the menu. I think i would have appreciated that more if I or any of my friends asked her for recommendations, but we didn't. Food was overpriced, $15 for 8 piece rolls stuffed with mayo and imitation crab meat? Do yourself a favor and go to sushi stop, the quality is about the same but the price is the difference between heaven and hell. And their spicy tuna is REALLLY spicy, way spicier than any other i had. The only thing decent here was their teriyaki, but i like my chicken kind of dry and jerky like texture, which it was. During our meal she kept coming by and talked throughout most of our meal. She kept on mentioning how chinese customers spend at least $30 when they come as if to imply as koreans we should spend more?? maybe not, but my friends and i agreed that's how it came across. I have eaten here several times. It's a little Japanese cafe. Order, sit down, chow and run. It takes a little while on off hours but it's still not bad. I just ordered for take-out delivery and we'll see if they nail it. OK, food done! Here's the spill.. on time. Food was still warm-ish. Big portion! Spicy tuna was yum! I would have ordered extra teriyaki sauce on the side because the rice soaks it all up. The white chicken meat was a little dry. I love, love their fish based salad dressing. Their salad has changed since the last time many years ago. They prep it with mixed greens instead of just iceburg. Great sushi and teriyaki at a great price with superior service. I've ordered delivery over a dozen times and been very pleased each time. The staff is always courteous and professional. so lets change my first review. I completely deleted my first review for one reason and one reason only. The fact that the manager whos name happens to be Ji as well ... Was very nice and understood where I was coming from as a customer regarding the problem I encountered earlier. Customer Service is a very big deal for me. I called her, told her the situation and she didn't hesitate to fix the problem. instead of waiting for me to call her back after speaking with yelp24, she contacted me and told me problem has been resolved. So Thank You for that. The food is very Delicious here don't get me wrong. I will say... if you want a decent to go sushi place, Maki Yaki can be a great place to go. The prices are not overprices as other sushi places (of course you won't be receiving the best quality at all time tho...) and it's quick! I've visited this place because of a business meeting at Pasadena. I've seen many Maki Yaki places as I drove by in many different areas, and I happen to stop by here rather than Rosco's... (urrrggghhh... Totally forgot about chicken and waffle!!! but oh wells...) The place was great and staffs were very nices as well. The prices weren't that bad either. Maki Yaki is under new ownership. I was a little worried at first, but the place has been remodeled and it has a much more open feeling to the counter. The new owners were friendly and welcoming just like the old couple that used to run the joint. Now the food: Great sized portions and the taste was really good! I ordered the calamari tempura roll the spicy tuna roll and gyoza, All were delicious. I'd recommend you try them out. One fault, they stopped carrying Yaki Soba (the Happy Bowl?). Bummer. I always come and order noodles. And at 6 bucks a bowl, it was cheap, filling, and tasty. I hope they consider making Soba noodles! read more

I recommend their lunch combo A $4.99 for teriyaki chicken, rice, salad, and eggrolls or gyoza (they mix it up sometimes)! You will get full from this alone, unless you have a realllly huge appetite. Lol Service is what makes this place even better... the staff is always nice and greets you as you walk in and out. I like that they have the cups for water out in the open for people. Sure, it's a trivial detail, but hey it makes a difference for me atleast! As for their sushi, I haven't tried them much. I knew from the reviews that I shouldn't expect much, but looking for a cheap sushi place down the street from where I was house/dog sitting, so I thought "it can't be that bad!" First annoyance, the prices reflected online are off by $2-3 dollars each item. Second, the place is so run down, paper peeling off the walls, dirty tables, I wouldn't ever physically eat here. Luckily I ordered take out...or so I thought. Poor quality fish on top of poorly wrapped rolls. I've been coming here for 6 years but I'm going to reassess whether to keep giving this place my money after the way they treated me today. They charged me $13.95 for a salmon bowl when their large displayed menu said $12.95. I informed them that I was overcharged and asked for my dollar back. They pulled out a foldout menu where it said $13.95. I guess they changed the price but didn't update the clearly-displayed overhead menu that still said $12.95. I've been ordering the same thing for years. Why would I look at a foldout menu when the item I always get is listed for $12.95 on the giant menu over the register? That's bonkers. The woman at the register then called the manager and told me that she couldn't refund my money but would give me a dollar from her personal money. Jesus. I didn't want her personal money I just wanted to be refunded the dollar that I was overcharged. Management messed up here by refusing to fix THEIR mistake and the server messed up by trying to shame a longtime customer for insisting on paying only the clearly listed price. This is the place to go for quick, convenient and reasonably-priced sushi that is decent quality. They have a lot of variety when it comes to their rolls and bento box options. If I could give zero stars for the service I would, they have me the wrong order and so I informed them and also that I had a lyft that I would be charged for because of this. Instead of making it right and refunding me for the mistake they made me pay 3 times as I would've paid for the mistake they made. So, I remember when this place first opened up and I was young and excited to have a sushi place open up here in the ghetto and not have to go down to old town. My friend and I got on the bus, arrived, ordered and....were pretty disappointed. And now, years later....I find myself still disappointed. Let me say the selection is great. Sushi, rice, noodles, fried things, the works. The lady here is really nice too. But the prices? Not so much. One of the rolls which is almost an exact replica of one at Kabuki (but of less quality) is exactly the same price. Bwap bwap bwaaaa....Not exactly what you'd expect from a "convenient" strip mall place. But let's say you have money flying out of your butt cheeks so price isn't an issue, and because of your condition you don't like to travel too far, what with it littering the streets behind you (feel free to pass by my place btw), and you just wanna know about the food. Ok. Well. So I ordered, the unagi and avocado bowl (7.95), spicy tuna roll (5.95), and gyoza (6 for 3.75). So, meh. I mean, the tuna seemed fresh enough, though not spicy at all, and the gyoza are actually pretty good. I'd get them again. Moist inside and crunchy on the outside, good job. Unagi bowl, well... Only four pieces of eel, and no real sauce, or maybe it was watery and ran off? Who knows cuz any sauce I tasted was in the rice and veggies on the side. But the unagi was pretty good, tender and sweet. So, in a pinch and when I don't want to go all the way to little tokyo, I guess this place will do. If it was a little cheaper, then this would totally be my spot for bargain (yet still tasty) japanese. Ah well. Oh, and they don't deliver, and parking is hell so you might have to park clear across the parking lot, so keep that in mind money-butt guy. You just can't catch a break can you? I stopped at this place a week ago to get some food. Worst decision of my life. I asked for the bento combo with chicken teriyaki and was was charged almost double. When I questioned it the lady taking my order seemed bothered and told me to give her the # of the item although the item didn't have a number. She was rude and snippish.
