The first time was for their 13th anniversary tuna bowl special and it was honestly one of the best tuna bowls I've had in a while. The restaurant has both an indoor dining area and outdoor patio, so it felt relatively spacious. The ambiance leans more on the upscale side. I would recommend parking at the Delacey parking structure for reliable and affordable parking (it's around an 8 minute walk). There was about a 10-20 minute wait after we arrived and the staff was very attentive throughout the entire experience. 1. Tuna Bowl: Their once a year anniversary special ($13 for their 13th anniversary), and this might've been my favorite dish I've had here. The cuts of tuna were incredibly fresh. The toro was thick-cut with a melt in your mouth texture. The sushi rice was also cooked and seasoned perfectly, which added a really nice touch to the dish. However, it took a really long time for it to arrive, to the point that other patrons who arrived after me got their sushi before me. It was confusing, but eventually, I got my food. I'd asked to have the omakase come all at once, but for some reason, I got five first, then another five long after I'd finished the first half. In addition, I was not informed of the sushi pieces for the first half, so I didn't know what I was eating. It also took a while to get my complementary fried shrimp head and my black sesame panna cotta (the latter was absolutely delicious, honestly the highlight!). Service was really slow, but the staff were really apologetic about it, given that it was super busy (for weekday lunch)! However, I'd made the reservation for my birthday, and unfortunately, I found the experience disappointing. The sushi was okay, but I've had better; I found Osawa's fish to be a bit tough and the rice was slightly hard. Again, the black sesame panna cotta was the best thing I've had, and I appreciated that it was complementary for my birthday. Our waitress was very kind and knowledgeable, and broke down the whole menu for us, explaining the daily specials and offering some of her recommendations. We tried the duck (one of the daily specials) and the shishito tempura peppers with tuna as appetizers. The peppers were very tasty... had a great amount of filling and had a light coat of batter. The duck was very underwhelming and lacked flavor. We tried the albacore roll which was delicious and the avocado tuna roll which was pretty plain and nothing out of the ordinary. I had been a longtime customer here for about seven years, but I stopped going after getting food poisoning from fish here in March 2025. After more than a year away, I decided to give Osawa another try on May 8, 2026. Unfortunately, the experience confirmed why I had stopped coming. Around 9:02 p.m., my waiter came by to ask for last orders. I ordered chicken karaage. This is a simple dish that usually comes out in about 4 to 5 minutes. For whatever reason, the order did not arrive until around 9:26 p.m. -- almost 25 minutes later. It seemed obvious that the order had been forgotten. When the karaage finally arrived, it looked hastily sauced. Several parts of the chicken were unsauced, which is not how the dish was normally served in the past. Given the delay and the apparent mishandling, I did not touch the dish. A Japanese male manager wearing glasses then came over. He recognized me, and I explained that I had not been back for more than a year because of the food poisoning incident from fish in 2025. Instead of responding seriously, the manager smiled and giggled slightly, then launched into an irrelevant conversation about his connections in the Japanese food industry in Old Town Pasadena. When he asked why I had not touched the chicken, I explained the almost 30-minute delay and the problems with the dish. Rather than comping the item or offering a real apology, the manager asked whether I still wanted to eat it or would prefer to cancel it. He then ended the conversation by suggesting that I come in during weekday lunch for the $18 lunch specials. That response was bizarre and tone deaf. I did not return after a food poisoning incident to hear a sales pitch about lunch specials. I returned as a longtime customer giving Osawa another chance. Osawa's way of doing business has changed a lot. I've seen better customer service at Erewhon. read more

We also got the duck on the hot stone thingy, the uni cream pasta, and croquettes...among other things, I think. Everything was delicious. Ambience is bustling and lively...although I think we might have been the loud table that night. Our server, Sakura, is the owner's daughter, was very attentive and friendly, and told us a bit about the art pieces sprinkled throughout the space, which were created by a local artist. Great place. The sushi selections were so good and so fresh, it literally melted in my mouth. The sushi to rice ratio was also perfect. My friends ordered the spicy pork special - also cooked to perfection. The pork was thinly sliced and the sauce was just right. They also ordered a bento box for their 2-yr-old daughter and she loved the salmon and rice (the adults ate the rest haha)! To top it off, we shared two desserts - an iced salted tiramiso and a peach mizumochi - both Japanese desserts, both so delicious! We ordered the Crunchy Cucumbers as a appetizer and it was of course the first dish to come out. 16 pieces of cucumber, mixed in sauce, and as the name of the dish, it's crunchy and very savory. Nothing too special but it was very delicious to start the meal. It's also a great palate cleanser for after the meal, plus points for a shareable dish. 2. We were feeling some of the roll choices but for this occasion we decided on the salmon roll, which didn't disappoint at all. Usually for rolls, there would be a lot of excess rice but this roll had the perfect amount, which mixed really well with the dressing, salmon, and the meat inside. Perfect aesthetic and flavor. 3. For our main entree, we tried the weekend special sashimi lunch. A sea board full of sashimi, rice, and miso soup. I also got various orders of sushi for $15-20 per 2 pc order (butterfish, snow crab, red snapper). Quality of the sushi is pretty good, but the cost is also on the higher end. It's nice to be able to order Japanese staples such as katsu and curry to go along with orders for individual sushi rolls. Their appetizers and hot dishes are typically good, but I wouldn't rate these as outstanding. For me, while I do feel that I get a pretty solid meal here, it has come down from five stars to four stars because it does have a hefty price tag, but I will continue to come because their hotate (Hokkaido scallop) is what my wife finds craveable. read more

Amazing fresh sushi spot in Pasadena. Be aware this place is packed and for good reason so expect a wait or reserve ahead of time. Omakase course is also very unique as it is not a fixed size and up to you to decide which is super neat. We got the blue crab roll as a little starter which was creamy and crabby. We each got a 12 piece omakase set and were thrilled with each piece chosen for us that day. The omakase is ended with the shrimp head from the shrimp used in the nigiri either deep fried or cooked with miso soup which was amazing. We normally don't get desert but the daily options were too good sounding for us to pass on. We did not regret getting dessert here either it was super good. read more

Definitely my favorite japanese restaurant in old town. Food is consistently good. They had a take home make your own roll special for christmas eve... and it was excellent. More than enough to feed the two of us. read more
