My bf and I are visiting Oregon and wanted to try some good sushi, there's not many sushi spots out here; however I HIGHLY recommend this spot. The fish quality is exceptional and full of flavor, cooked and cured to perfection. We enjoyed our meal thoroughly, absolutely no complaints. The restaurant is very sanitary and cleanly. Our server was very kind, timely, and professional, not to mention super sweet! We left her a generous and well deserved tip!! The ambiance was perfect. I took my friend here for her birthday and it was fantastic. Neither of us had been here before but the reviews looked great so we gave it a shot and I'm glad we did. I got the chicken bibimbap, my friend got the Philly roll and the spider roll, my other friend got the veggie roll, and our fourth person got the chicken teriyaki plate. The miso soup was smooth and didn't have an overwhelming flavor. The bibimbap was very flavorful and well-cooked. The rolls were all well-made and tasted great, and the chicken teriyaki had just the right amount of flavor. There's a parking lot next door that's paid as well as street parking. Found this great sushi spot while visiting OU during family weekend. They have have an assortment of Japanese food (Ramen, Udon, Yakisoba, etc...and of course Sushi) and some Korean food (Bibimbap, Sundubu jigae-spicy tofu soup). They have many sushi rolls, so you can't go wrong with what you order. Restaurant was very spacious, service was great and attentive. They have a large bar with TVs. We really enjoyed almost everything we ordered: agedashi tofu, crispy rice with salmon (even a seafood hater loved this so much they had seconds), chicken karaage, lion king roll, shiro roll, spicy chicken fried rice (another favorite of our group), veggie yakisoba (tasty sauce, fresh veggies, and al dente noodles), beef rib-eye teriyaki. We also liked the chicken wings (tender and flavorful, although we prefer dry wings to saucy, and they were too spicy for the teens in our group), crazy monkey roll, beef yakiudon, and tonkotsu with cheese. Craving non-ramen Japanese food, I came across this place as I was looking for a place to eat. The reviews on Yelp! looked promising. Interestingly, this restaurant also offered Korean food, albeit a limited selection, in addition to Japanese. Other than that observation, the menu offerings looked good, from sushi to the bento box combos, donburi & udon/ramen. We ordered the katsu bento (which came with tempura & a california roll), unagi don and misoyaki salmon. The portions were large, we were all quite full afterwards. The deep fried items in the bento box were not greasy and very delicious, the unagi tasted very good too--as you would expect for grilled eel and my misoyaki salmon was good too--flavorful. I just wished the salmon was grilled--it seemed like it was poached and misoyaki sauce slathered over it. The salmon was also served with a large plateful of stir fried veggies, also thought to be unusual and just looked like a plate-filler to me. This was not bad, but it just didn't check the box for me. If you are visiting or a townie, it's worth checking out. read more

Me and my GF love sushi. so on this Oregon trip, of course we are getting sushi before driving back to CA. Food: We had Popcorn Lobster roll, Rainbow Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Salad & Chicken Karaage. I love the attention to detail. The salad actually got enough dressing for the entire plate. The sushi rolls were serve on this wooden platform. When the Chef handed us the rolls, it gave us an appetizing visual impact. Service: Our server was friendly and quick. From leading to our seat, taking our order, providing us with water and rest of the service. Good Experience! Pricing: We are Californians, so the fact there is no sales tax on our bill is a big Thumb UP. We think the pricing is adequate for what this restaurant offered. I should have gotten the soy sauce based ramen instead as this had no additional flavor than the regular miso soup. My bad. Second time having Makoto today, and just as good as the first! I don't typically like raw fish. Yes I know. But I've had bad raw fish sushi before, and just avoid it now. Went with some friends the first time and tried a bunch of rolls and appetizers. Every roll we got had raw fish in it, and every roll was fantastic. It all tasted fresh, and was carefully put together. There were no sloppy rolls, and presentation was really nice. I've been looking forward to going back. We went again today and tried two new rolls, and our favorite from last time. Same thing- everything was fresh, tasted amazing, and looked delicious. We wanted to try the cowboy roll but wanted it a little spicy. It was slow, so we asked if they could do that just expecting some of the spicy mayo or spicy sauce from the crazy monkey to be put on the side. Instead, the chef made adjustments to the sauce and the crab, making both spicy with habaneros and Thai peppers. The flavor was so good, and then the spice hit you. It was HOT! I love heat, but this thing had me crying involuntarily. If you can't find food spicy enough in town, Makoto can deliver the rush you're looking for. It was probably one of the best rolls I've ever had. So far, we haven't had a bad thing here. The monkey brain appetizer and calamari are delicious, and the Cowboy, Crazy Monkey, and Yummy Crunch rolls are three of the favorites we had. It is not cheap, but it is worth every penny. This is my favorite sushi spot in Eugene-Springfield. The taste never lets me down. I love the monkey brain (a must get appetizer every time) and all their sushi rolls. I've tried quite a few things on the menu and I'm never disappointed. I've eaten here more times than I can count over the years and I just keep coming back. I love their grilled salmon belly. Such a decadent treat. Love their miso too. Service is always professional and great. It's usually not too crowded in there, which I love. We were looking for food to eat before playing a show not far from this restaurant. Instead of the usual American food affair, we chose to go to Makoto. The menu offered a wide variety of food from sushi, to bento boxes, two Japanese noodles, and even some Korean. I chose to get the tonkotsu ramen and seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was very on point and was refreshing for our trip. The ramen was also very delicious I'll be it was a little expensive for what you got. The pork belly inside was really delicious and the egg is always an awesome touch. The service was really awesome. Our server was very kind and attentive to our needs, taking care of 5 people. My favorite Japanese restaurant in Eugene! My wife and I have been eating here for years. She loves their bimibop and I've always been happy with their sushi. Their salmon is always fresh, the escolar is so good and recently I tried the sea breem. Holy wow that was so good covered in lemon juice and a habanero salt. Well the food was good. But unfortunately they must have been severely understaffed this evening as our dinner took nearly two hours for every dish to arrive. With a heavy heart I write this review. They get the rating because I hate impostors. The building is extravagant, the server is eloquent and classy, the menu is extraordinary with color and representation and the pairing of vegetables and proteins are well-thought-out in their rolls. But nothing about their higher price point food was enjoyable and some was hard to swallow. In Japan it takes longer to become a sushi chef than it does to become a doctor. This is for many reasons. One of the 1st things an apprentice learns is how to master the rice because sushi chefs will tell you that is 1 of the most important aspects. Their rice was absolutely horrible absolutely horrific. The rolls although they looked amazing and the vegetables paired well with their protein choice, the rice was warm and gummy and did not have enough rice vinegar. It was very very hard on the palate. The sushi rice for the nigiri was way too much rice for the portion of protein and because the rice was so bad it literally destroyed every piece that I consumed. Note genmai tea is famous in Japan. What they serve is only genmai in name. Last, I would dare the chef to slice the toro they sent to my table and consume it this morning. We saved this $17 bite for the very end and man was that a mistake. As soon as it entered my mouth and I started to chew, instantly I realized oh my God all I can taste was a strong fishy flavor. Certainly was not the buttery flavor bound toro that I would expect for $17. I should have spit it out, but I just wanted to swallow it, pay the bill and get out of there. read more

We were very sad when we found out Makoto had closed its doors and were hoping it was not permanent because this is our go-to sushi spot. Luckily, they've reopened this month! We stopped in for an early dinner today and were not disappointed by the quality of the food. We ordered 5 rolls to share between the two of us--Crazy Monkey, Golden Dragon, Lion King, Ninja, & Yummy Crunch--and it was the perfect amount of food. Everything was fresh and delicious and came out to about $80 before tip. It did take a bit to come out, but sushi usually does and I think they may still be short staffed (which is what lead to the initial closure), so that is understandable. Makoto is a great place. We were visiting Eugene and wanted to try as many sushi place as possible and Makoto is on the top of the list at the end of the day. The atmosphere was awesome with great service. What we got: Crazy Monkey : really good roll. We wanted something with a kick. It wasn't that spicy at all for us but it was still good. Hard to go wrong with a roll with lots of toppings. I felt like there wasn't enough fish on the roll. Hamachi-kama : really good also but extra oily. I know yellowtail collar is suppose to be oily but it felt like there wasn't enough meat to balance it out. We always get this with a bowl of rice as it fits perfectly together. Sake toro nigiri: We didn't take a picture but it was beautiful. Extra fatty-melt in your mouth salmon that was just obviously the best piece of fish we had all night. Last we got the dessert, the fried tempura banana. We did not care for it because it was a lot of batter and not a lot of banana. If you are ok with that, it's not bad. It has a coconut flakes in the batter/tempura. We just expected something different. Overall, solid place and would go again whenever we are in Eugene! read more

We were able to finally try Makoto on a whim on a Saturday night around 6 (previously we had tried on day they were closed unexpectedly, quite awhile ago). We were sat after a very brief wait while they cleaned up a couple recently vacated booths. They were comfortable, even if the backs looked very upright and rigid, though the table itself seemed a bit close. No matter, I thought the decor and live edge wood theme they had going on was nice. Our server's first visit to our table was early so we just ordered a drink. They have an extensive menu so we needed a bit longer. I did appreciate that they tried to make it obvious in the selections what had raw fish and what was or wasn't deep fried. It took a little longer after the drink order once we were ready to order to see our server again. We ordered the chicken yakitori, the ninja roll and Texas roll. Turns out... the chicken yakitori was one skewer for the $7.50. Cute? Not really, it was very good but would have been nice if each of us had had a skewer to have to ourselves. So that was disappointing and annoying. Wouldn't do that again. The ninja roll was quite good, excellent presentation as well. The Texas was a bit bland and boring. Will definitely be back to try more options. We also ordered the mango ice cream to share for dessert (though I think it was technically a sorbet?). It was the perfect light finish to the meal. The server was kind but not overly friendly, it would have been nice to be checked in on a bit more often, like when we did try to get their attention for more drinks. Just in town over night on a Saturday and went strolling thru downtown Eugene with friends having a few cocktails. We happened by Makotos about 5:30 and decided to go in for dinner. The place was pretty big and not to crowded. There were a lot of booths available and were seated in one towards the middle. It had a nice view of the street, so you could people watch. We ordered combo tempura, Korean pork, fried salmon salad and calamari. All of which came out in a timely manner. So we didn't feel rushed to finish salad and appetizer. Server was very nice and attentive. Lucky we arrive when we did because by 6ish the place got VERY busy and people were starting to have to wait for a table. This is a sushi spot, but I come here for the dolsot bibimbap with spicy pork. This place is actually quite large and can handle a lot of people. There is several booths, probably 15 or so, then there is a whole bar area that seats probably 10+ where you can watch those putting together your dinner, either sushi or otherwise. As with any traditional "sushi" place, there are always additional things on the menu for you to try that doesn't include raw fish. With an extensive menu when it comes to Sushi, you can get pretty much anything that is typical of sushi restaurants. There are always specials depending on the time of year and what fish that can be gotten in fresh. As I stated above, they also have the Korean Dolsot Bibimbap, or Korean stir fry. Served in the traditional hot pot, or stone bowl at a blistering temperature, you can get your protein with vegetables and rice all mixed in the bowl for a delicious meal. I have been here several times for lunch, and although there is not a lot of street parking (which is metered), there is a pay lot right next door, which would cost you a couple of bucks for your hour, which you can easily get in and out of here in that time. I have been here one time for dinner and sat at the bar. The preparations are traditional, and appropriate portions. read more

Well, the vibe was nice, but the calamari was rubbery and over cooked, the Korean fried chicken wings should have been called drumettes because five tiny precooked chicken wings shouldn't be $13. Like seriously small. I was thinking to myself that "for $13 bucks five whole wings ain't bad" nope, Sysco pre breaded Korean style wings with jarred sweet chili sauce. These things were not par cooked, they were precooked, frozen, and then fried for service. Anyways, I ordered the Crazy Monkey roll since it was fairly expensive and had some spicy tuna, spicy salmon, shrimp, some roe, chilis and a spicy sauce. I usually get the spicy option at most places because I find that the food here is typically under seasoned and muted. It had the spiciest rating of all the rolls! Yeah, under seasoned, not spicy, tiny, muted, plain ol tuna roll that costs $23. Mokoto came highly recommended from friends of ours in the area and said "they are the best sushi in town" but my heart sank when we got to our table and the menu was 8 pages deep with offerings spanning Japanese to Korean. Appetizers, salads, rolls, bento, soups, noodles, yakisoba, ramen, bibimbap, sushi boats and hand rolls. My point being is I shouldn't have to be shepherded around the duds on the menu. So if you're going out on a date night and want to know which items to skip: Calamari with ponzu sauce Korean fried chicken wings Crazy Monkey roll Didn't send anything back because I was trying to have a nice time with my wife. Paid the bill, tipped, and left. All this, and of course you still have to stand in the parking lot for 15 minutes downloading an app to pay for your parking. I'm not saying I'll never be back. Maybe next time I'll come with someone that knows what not to order here, because with eight pages of things to order, there's going to be some stinkers. read more

If you prefer not to seat people after a certain time, consider letting your clientele know that on your signage. Let's say that you are open until 10:00 but prefer not to see people after 9:30. If someone shows up at 9:15, please don't pretend not to see them for 5 minutes and then approach them with feigned politeness, claiming that it's 9:30 and too late to seat them.
