One day I was stumbling around outside of Tasty China and I noticed there was a barber shop right next door. I peeked inside. I saw a guy reclined in a barber chair, getting a straight razor shave. It looked kinda cool. I started thinking maybe I should give it a try. So I quit shaving. Didn't shave for two weeks. I grew a beard so scraggly I barely recognized myself in the mirror. It was like I had gone into the Witness Protection Program or something, I adopted a new persona. No more Mikey. I became Miguel Sanchez, visiting Professor of History from Chile. This whole new persona thing turned out not to be one of my better choices. Because, first of all, I don't speak Spanish. And, secondly, I know nothing whatsoever about Chilean history. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I needed to end this whole new persona thing. I called up Mak and booked an appointment for a shave. The shave was a very interesting experience. A positive experience, to be sure. But in many ways, not at all what I expected, and not like the shave you see in movies. Not that that is a bad thing. I have to say I was super impressed with the final result. Definitely the closest shave I ever had in my life. My face was much smoother than when I shave with my usual double edge razor. And Mak's attention to detail was phenomenal. I could tell there was no way he was going to let me out of that chair until every hair that needed to be removed from my head was removed. For example: Mak asked if I wanted him to wax my ears and nose to get rid of those pesky hairs. Now, I've never been waxed before but I've seen videos of women getting waxed so I told him No Thank You. But Mak wasn't going to let me walk out of his shop with visible nose and ear hair. No way. He went after those hairs with electric clippers and didn't stop until they were gone. I mean, all gone. Mak asked me if I wanted a haircut and I declined. But, once again, he made sure I was cleaned up, shaving my sideburns, behind my ears and the back of my neck. All of that extra expert grooming at no addtional charge. I was very impressed. The shave was only $30. For the level of service provided, I rate that as a 5 Star bargain! I've had my eye on this place for a while now. I've noticed how busy the shop is, and how good guys look when they come up out of here. I've lived in the area for more than 20yrs and have bounced around from barber to stylist and back again searching for someone who is as knowledgeable, experienced, reliable, hip, and friendly as Mak is. I'm happy to say my search is over. He's gentle, proficient, and his attention to detail is unmatched. Mak has a profound understanding of men's most fashion-forward hairstyles, and I've never found anyone who understands beards as well as he does. A lot of people can give you a good haircut but don't know the first thing about how your beard relates to it. Mak understands the whole package. If you know exactly what you want then he'll be able to do it for you, he can do it all, but if you're open to something new then there's no one better to put your trust in. Didn't even get to the haircutting part of the experience. Showed up at 9am to be the first one in the door and waited outside for 15 minutes because apparently opening on time is too much for this place to handle. Got inside and someone had an appointment so they go first. That's fair. But then I'm told a 2nd barber is coming so the wait won't be long. Great Im in a rush. The second barber shows up late too, and was even told by the first barber who also late that he was late. Seems like a theme here. Then someone else walks in and get seated. Doesn't mention any appointments or anything but just sits down. If you're gonna open late, at least be honest with the wait time. Maybe this place gives good haircuts but they obviously don't care about your time, I'd rather deal with the mediocrity of great clips over this unorganized and unpunctual mess that is mak's barber shop read more
