I was excited to try this spot from the great reviews but ngl I was disappointed. It wasn't bad but I left feeling dissatisfied with my meal after paying about $30 (14.99/lb) for it (but it definitely filled me up). I liked the self serve style of the bowls and all the ingredients looked good, and they had a good variety. They even had wagyu beef slices. The self serve sweet tea was also light and refreshing. Decor is bright and modern. They have a scale you can use to weigh your food before buying it. Food came out in a reasonable time. I got the dry pot in the mild spice level. It comes out in a metal pot with the sauce drizzled over the top. Usually I expect the sauce to come stir fried into the ingredients. Because of this, I feel like the dish didn't soak up flavor from the sauce. The sauce itself was also not very flavorful, like what I'd normally expect from mala dishes. You can add sauces from the sauce bar yourself but I feel that the original flavor should already be flavorful. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, and should've ordered medium, but I think less spiciness shouldn't compromise the flavor. My dish also came out almost lukewarm. My partner ordered a soup base and had piping hot soup but there was no steam coming from mine. I also prefer my veggies on the softer side, so the veggies were a little tough to bite for me. Overall was an okay meal but it was lackluster for me. Dry pot flavor could be improved by adding more of that tongue numbing spice and stir frying the dish in the sauce. Mala Town is our new favorite when we are in Edison. We visited Monday morning when they opened and there were already people waiting to get in. All the other customers were excited and explaining how things worked to their friends. This is not all you can eat. You select your ingredients and they cook it for you. As a tip, preview all of their selections first to decide what you want or take a little bit of what you think you will like and then go back for more after you have seen everything. I made the mistake of taking a lot of the items I usually like (veggies, fish balls, noodles) and I didn't realize how much they had in the meat section. I ended up with more fatty beef, pork belly, prime beef char siu pork than expected. My bowl ended up being 2.7 lbs precooked. My wife and I got the medium spicy beef broth and my daughter went for the mild dry stir fry. Warning, this is mala style so even the mild has a kick to it and the medium is very spicy (although not quite tongue numbing). The char siu was my favorite. We decided to split a pot between the three of us and loaded it up with about 3 pounds of uncooked food, which came out to around $47. It's a self-serve spot, so you pick your food, pay, and then they seat you. I do wish they had more variety when it came to veggies and noodles, but their protein selection was solid. We went for the dry pot, which came with a peanut sauce--you can customize the spice level too. I was expecting the usual mala flavors, so the peanut sauce threw me off a bit. As for the noodles, the ones that looked like udon ended up being kind of a letdown. They didn't have that signature chewy texture--honestly, they tasted more like fish cake than noodles?? Really wanted to like this place..I understand they're pretty new so I'm not going to judge too harshly but there were just a few things that made the dining experience less than awesome. I will say the process of grabbing ingredients to put in your bowl was smooth and easy. The area was clean, the veggies looked fresh. There was a sign on the drink cooler saying "opening special: 1 free drink per person". We saw they were out of the bottles of green tea and asked the cashier if they had more...he made a half-hearted attempt to check but said no, they were all out. So we just grabbed a can of soda each. Lo and behold, after we sat down someone came out and restocked the teas. Ok, the drinks were free so no big deal. We were a party of 5 and I submitted my order first. I watched the other 4 people in my group get their steaming hot bowls of food and...didn't get mine. After watching another table get theirs I finally get up and ask...and the guy goes "oh ..you're at table x, hold on", runs in the back and brings my cooked bowl to me. So, why was it sitting in the back for so long? By the time I get it it's already lukewarm, plus mine had the least amount of sauce/flavoring compared to the rest of my party. But now on to taste - 3 of us got the dried flavor, 2 of us got the beef soup - all the same level of spicy. The soups were actually pretty tasty but the dry bowls had way too much cumin - kinda overpowered everything. We also saw some tables were given small bowls of rice - is this part of the cost of the malatang or is it extra? No signage anywhere so who knows. Mala Town is a pick-your-own ingredients hot pot restaurant, where the cost of your dish is per pound of ingredients, whether you get a bowl of full of veggies or a bowl packed with meat. They have a great selection to choose from, including ones that aren't always offered at hot pot restaurants, like stuffed tofu pouches or chashu pork. They weigh your food, you choose your broth flavor (we opted for the dry sauce instead), and you can make a dipping sauce at the sauce station while they cook your food then bring it out to your table. Our meal came out almost immediately. The two of us thought we grabbed a large amount of food, but the price including a drink and two bowls of rice ended up only being about $34 (cheaper than our usual meal at nearby Spice 24) which filled us up plenty with some left over to take home. If you are willing to pay, this place is an amazing weight-by-pound mala place! They offer soup or dry pots, and you get to pick your ingredients. They put a limited amount of the more expensive offerings, like the abalone, but if you catch them up on the refill, it definitely fits the bang for your buck as they only price it by weight, not what you pick. The sauce bar is one of the nicest I have seen, with sliding lids over the sauces to help with risks for contamination. The staff are also willing to help out with the sauce bar as needed, but mainly stick to the cash register. Note that a bowl of rice costs extra here. Water is self-serve with a little water dispenser and small metal cups next to the sauce bar. Overall, this is a nice place to stop in for a lunch time meal, with fast turnaround from weighing your food to it arriving cooked at your table. With other places in town like spice 24 temporarily closed, for your dry or soupy hot pot needs, Mala town will definitely help fix that! The only negative I would say is the parking. The restaurant was busy but not too crowded, it was my first experience at a build you own hotpot. I have been to regular hot pot restaurants where you cook your own food and honestly I prefer that. I got the dry hot pot and my boyfriend got the beef bone soup. The dry hot pot flavor is like peanut butter with chili oil. I did not like it at all , I've had dry hotpot before and was expecting it to be more like chili and peppers. When I asked the cashier, she said it was a house chili sauce. I made my own sauce at the sauce station and that's what helped make it decent enough to eat. The beef bone soup was also not good. Tastes like soup from a box watered down. came here for dinner on a tuesday night after my sister was craving it. parking spots are limited in the front but there's apparently more spots in the back. it was a bit early (around 5/6pm) so there weren't too many people which was nice. it's a self serve place like your classic all you can eat hot pot where you get the bowl & tongs and pick out what you want to eat. but be careful as it is $15.99 per pound! I honestly think it is a steal as long as you don't pick out items that are heavy/water dense (like eggs, cabbages). i got spinach, enoki mushrooms and a bunch of meat and it only came out to $14ish whereas my sister got noodles and so it was a bit heavy and came out to $22ish. you pick out the broth you want and they cook it and bring it to your table. i got the medium beef broth and enjoyed it - they give free rice and jasmin green tea which was a plus. overall, i really enjoyed it and believe it's better than all you can eat since i can't eat that much anyway. definitely recommend & will be back! read more

I've been seeing this place whenever we drive by and been wanting to try it out. I never realized that it was a hotpot place and that it's a chain. So, after reading the reviews, we decided to try this place out. Upon entering, we see that the walls are a gorgeous shade of light teal, with one of the walls looking like the top was cut off. This wall has green foliage on it as well as the name "Mala Town" in lights. The walls in the dining area are also covered in designs of bowls and food and the tables can seat up to 4 people. We all got our food from the "bar" and paid it at the cashier. What was strange was that she assigned us our table. We couldn't pick a table of our choice. She gave us a number and told us to leave it there so that our meals would be brought to the right table. I didn't understand why we had assigned tables. I guess it's to guarantee that we don't hog the bigger tables. Whatever. Daughter ordered hers with tomato soup broth. I ordered mine with Beef Bone Soup (medium) and Hubs ordered his Malaban, which is a dry mix. His came with peanuts. Originally, I wanted Sweet and Sour Tomato Soup but they didn't have it. Daughter loved hers and the fact that she got to make her own and not share. LOL. I liked mine but medium came out a bit spicy for me. I have to remember to get the mild next time. Hubs loved his a lot. There were some cute items at the bar. We got this "money bag" item. It was pretty cute and tasted pretty good. I forgot what was in it. Even with the assigned tables and number sign, they gave Hubs the wrong order, anyway. He got the people in back of us and vice versa. He told the cashier and she had them go back to the food bar and get their items again and they cooked them another order. They were told to keep the wrong order. I thought that was nice of them. This place is like a nice version of Chipotle. You pick what you want and they make it for you. Service was friendly and quick.
