Want to start off by saying great store and super nice workers. The problem is the consistency with their hot food bar. I go there every day for breakfast and sometimes they have no breakfast bentos, sometimes they are all cold on the counter instead of in the empty heated hot bar. How I do enjoy having this market only a few miles from home but man the prices are steep here. Typically we are stopping only for the deli area of the store. Hello sushi every time we stop and they never disappoint at all. I have had the Poke on time and it was very good as well. We have had the warm food a few times as well. This gem of a grocery store is located in a beautiful, relatively new shopping center. We picked up some items for our AirBnB stay. If we lived here this would definitely be our main grocery store. So, everyone was waiting for the new Market to open and when it did it was packed. I waited a couple of days to go. When I got there I was impressed. It's big it's bright and it very clean. So disappointing. Their poke is not consistent. I bought the Wasabi poke bowl. Had zero taste. We had to stop longs to buy shoyu. It appears they have different people making the poke because sometimes it has good taste and sometimes it sucks. This only makes me weary on purchasing poke in the future from Malama Market.. We stopped here quickly on our way to the Kapoho Tidepools to grab sandwiches to bring with us. Instead of running through Subway (located in same strip mall) we thought we could go in and get fresh-made, higher quality sandwiches from their Deli. And while we DID get that done, IT CAME AT A VERY HIGH COST. It was more then $7-something PER SANDWICH!!! had we known how expensive it was gonna be, we would never have done it. We do this around home all the time, and it's either like $4 per sandwich, or $6 with a "meal deal" type thing. So the fact that it was more than $7 for just one sandwich by itself was just absurd. Other than that, the store seemed fairly nice, had most of the standard items, and the ladies working the deli were friendly enough! Hats off to the manager of the newly relocated, much larger, grocery market in Pahoa. Specifically, the excellent job of hiring and training dozens of new store clerks. All were pleasant and helpful. Two walked me to the item rather than tell me the aisle. That's service! The location of items are confusing. The aisle numbers are not easy to see. What works is signs that say what's on an aisle as with Safeway. I recommend a computer terminal for customers, ideally with an Alexa-type application. Customer: Pearl rice? Computer says or displays: Aisle three. If not, a kiosk in the front of the store that alphabetically lists items and aisles. I'm hoping they will have one or more cart stalls in the parking area. It's exhausting for us seniors to walk the cart back to the store. I was pleased to see what appeared to be some used display cases and shelves rather than expensive new fancy shelves. read more

We came here for years and always thought it was a dumpy store - not anymore!!! In our recent visit we found that it's now clean, bright, and provides fresh and high quality produce. They even have Big Island Booch Kombucha on tap. Yum. We didn't try the prepared foods, but the poke looked very tasty and fresh. Came to this location and purchased food for a three day stay on island. I had a long day of traveling and asked if they had a restroom. The lady who checked us out was so nice and said if I went to the back and found someone to let me in I could use the store restroom. On my way back there I asked 2 different employees once before the door and once as I was even opening the door. And they both tell me to proceed to the bathroom, I say thank you as soon as I open the door I see auntie with the salt and pepper ponytail coming through with a cart of onions so of course I I hold the door for her, as I'm about to ask again where the restroom is she starts yelling at me! "Why are you back here?! The bathroom? You need an escort to go to the bathroom!" And so I politely told her I just asked every employee and they had just let me to go in there. This wacko kept on yelling at me about I can't just come back there I need an escort... lady I know! I literally was doing everything I could in my power to find one asking everyone I saw and was going to ask again after holding the door for you. I hope you read this and realize you were a rude controlling spaz and maybe you will stop yelling at customers for no reason. It will be worth it just to save a few people from your crazy nonsense attacks please calm down. read more

Malama Market is a below average grocery store. The food is more expensive than KTA, which is approximately 15miles away towards Hilo. The food is more expensive than the aforementioned KTA and the selection is not nearly as good. On top of its higher prices and worse selection, the store itself is crammed together, so there is not much room to go maneuver. The only thing that saves this store from being 1-star store is it's size-able beer and wine stock. read more

this store is just that, a nasty old store, have been shopping there for about 4 years, 2 -3 times a week, have a family of 11 so regular trips to the store are required. I was in this malama market this moring, and when i went to the checkout line, had part of my order on the belt, and was rudely told to go to the kapuna line. then cashiers friend was told to take my place in the other line, the cashier is giving me the stinkeye :::: well gues what ? i dont need this from her or anyone else. so i left my order all on the counter and left the store, your loss assholes..... i hope your day gets much worse, were done with you !!!!!!!!! read more

Honestly I had high hopes for this place. I'm a resident of Pahoa and have been here 15 years. We were so excited to have a new market. But after 6 months I'm here to tell you, it sucks. Everything is overpriced, which is no surprise for Hawaii. However, it's not great quality. The fruit is a joke, in the summer when they get imported fruit from the mainland, it's bottom of the barrel type stuff. You need to check the expiration date on absolutely everything, I've purchased stale tortilla chips on multiple occasions. The meat department has a sad selection and often times the stock is low. It's just an all around disappointment. Too bad my only other option is a 60 mile round trip to Hilo. Here's a tip if you're moving to Hawaii, or even visiting. Trash your expectations, at the very least keep them low and you'll have a great time. read more

Anytime Bar inside Malama in the Puna Kai shopping center is a great place to grab a drink. we chose just after Sunset to have a few beers graciously served up by Michelle who was both Extremely pleasant and helpful in making our choices, there were many. We enjoyed Big Island Brewhaus "Overboard", it was AMAZING!! We also enjoyed "Mo Hazy" by OLA brewery located right here in Hilo. Aloha Beer Co. also had a very delicious "Queens Pilsner" That was light yet flavorful and refreshing. We did get there after hot food counter was closed but were able to enjoy a few pupus like Orange Chicken and some awesome Secret spicy Ahi Poke with Masago ooh rah!! The only saving grace of the store (which is why 3 stars instead of 2) is the deli counter which usually has great local food like Lau Lau at reasonable prices. Their bakery also has a good selection at more normal prices. But a 12 pack of soda for $8 or $9 and a 6 pack of Heineken for $9? We did so but only in desperation. In town is the Cash N Carry which has better pricing but is much smaller and with lots of local feel. read more

It's nice having a grocery store in Pahoa, but this one is overpriced, hardly ever has sales, expensive alcohol, and VERY little organic options. There isn't even an organic produce area. And the poke is terrible. About 4 years ago, it was ono every time, but now it is only the toughest pieces of fish, all muscle and the fish tastes old. My trips to Malama Market have been enjoyable. The people that work there are nice because they let me use their bathroom, opened a lane when others were full of people and have been generally friendly. If you eat organic food, they have a few things. The organic coffee is a good deal at $10.79/pound. They also have organic honey and organic vodka, unlike Island Naturals. Since I could only bring a 3-ounce container of my soap on the plane, I was pleasantly surprised to see a huge container of my hand and body soap for sale. I was buying it at Down to Earth in Honolulu, Dr. Bronner's Almond liquid soap. So there's that. I bought my first organic eggs from this market and I hard-boiled them. They were fantastic too. I ate them with organic black pepper and sea salt that I bought here. Their organic bananas are delicious. I just ate a dozen of them over three days. Some of Nature's Path organic products like cereal is sold here. They also carry some of the Woodstock organic line and I bought their tasty raisins. Finally, they have a toiletry aisle with things like rubbing alcohol and dental floss, in case you need those. Good stuff. I will be baaack (unless the Night Marchers call). read more

Not much organic produce...had to go to Islands Market for that. Small section of local Hawaiian raised natural beef tho...so plus there. They have my favorite brand of tequila...plus. They also have my favorite organic wine...another plus. Very friendly staff....:) read more

For Hawaii, the prices are decent. That being said, if you're a mainlander prepare yourself for sticker shock! Their prepared foods are pretty yummy, I really enjoyed the sushi from here. First time at this Pahoa location. The aroma of the food was so tantalizing. Walked over to the poke and chicken area. Melani was very kind. She asked if I needed help, then said to let her know when I'm ready. After deep contemplation, I decided on the California Roll Poke and grabbed some cone sushi. I tried the Kim Chee Mussel and that too was very good. She suggested I try the spicy poke with hot chili. It was good but I decided not to. I asked her about the chicken wings. There was this white stuff in it. She said it was the Salt and Vinegar Chicken Wings. She asked if I wanted a sample. I declined cause I already knew I had to have 2...lol. She told me have a good day and with a smile. Her customer service was so on point! That's why I asked for her name and thanked her. I hope I spelled it right. If not, so sorry. Compared to the other grocery stores in the area it is larger, cleaner, on most things the prices are lower and selection larger. It also has a nice bakery section with your savory bread needs (although if you want more local-style desserts try the nearby Pooki's). Malama also caries some decent poke and both fresh and frozen 'ready to heat' versions of the local fare like pipikaula, lau lau, Hawaiian chorizo, mahi mahi, etc. Good selection of sodas, juice, and those silly needs like sunscreen (although I think the last item is really expensive here though I might be spoiled by Costco). It's also open fairly late for the BI (10PM). read more

For prepared food I thought the prices were fairly good. I got 2 decent sized Chinese chicken salad for $5 each, a slice of chocolate cake for $2.20 (it was yummy too), and 4 maple syrup cinnamon rolls for $3 and change. Items were around the same as buying from Foodland. read more

The store has nothing but a bunch of high price crap. The chicken is burnt black, the freezer break down so the food is spoiled, but they still sell it at a high price. I think the prices at Malama way beat out the prices at Foodland in Kea'au. Granted they aren't great by Hilo standards, but it is reasonable and nice to have a place in Pahoa. I think the best thing going is the little bags of fruit and veg that have that are a little mushy or on the way out. Super cheap deal, just eat them same day or the next. read more
