First time in Malibu, it was an amazing stay first of all. This haircut was the highlight of my trip, and downright the best customer service I have ever received in a barber shop. The owner/ hair stylist Dolly was so sweet and supportive, offering us coffee and water and being a really good conversationalist. It was also my first time getting a buzz cut, and she could not have been more supportive and upbeat about the process. The price was amazing for the experience, and if you ever need a cut in Malibu, there is only one place to go, and that is to this shop!! The atmosphere was so cool as well, ten out of ten vibes all around. Would fly back just to get another hair cut from her. Please support this business!!! read more

Wow, I hate to leave this review but I feel compelled and am taking the time to write this out because it just happened, was totally outrageous and I'm pissed. There is a woman named CAROL that works at Malibu Barber Shop. STAY AWAY!!! She did my hair a few times. The first time she left what she affectionately calls "digits" which are small horizontal spaces between your natural hair color (in my case brown) and the blond highlight she puts in, so this does not look good!! Since she has a name for it she is familiar with this problem so why she still does it to people is a mystery. Anyway I spoke with her about it and all it took was a little extra effort of her part to simply use her fingers and blend the high lights in so she doesn't leave the "digits". So we resolved this problem. On next aptmt. she forgot to dye some of the hair in back. So I had to drive back to Malibu to get her to fix it. Next issue was she likes to put the highlights in while your hair is only semi dry, presumably because it saves her time, but IMO it effects the highlights...she says it doesn't and if you want your hair completely dried, she will offer you the door!!! Yes, she did this to me!! Even though I offered to dry it myself! I thought about it but decided not to leave because I needed to get my hair done that day, plus who has time to go to 2 hair appointments? So she calmed down, apologized and continued doing my hair. I should never have gone back after that, but I did because I didn't feel like searching for someone new. So recently, I think my 4th time going to her, we booked an aptmt and she told me "you are the only one on Thurs!" I even called to remind her of the aptmt since she has a habit of forgetting you booked an aptmt with her!...this happened one time when I showed up for our aptmt and said "we don't have an aptmt today", but I had evidence we did because she left confirmation on my machine. Anyway, I called her a couple of hours prior to this recent appointment just to remind her and got her voicemail so I left a message. I get there today and not only am I not the only aptmt, but she shouts to me while doing someone's hair "Mon. or Tues." I looked at her, "What?" She says, "I'm really busy, how about Mon. or Tues?" Are you kidding me? Who does this? I drive all the way out there, she doesn't have the courtesy to call to say she is too busy, I call her to confirm, anyway, she says "I thought I was supposed to confirm with you since you didn't want to catch what I had." I said "We had booked the appointment for 2 PM, I never heard from you, so I arrived at our appointed time." So she stuck with the aptmt. She starts on my hair and tells me she is really rushed. I said "No worries, I understand." She did the base, washed it out, then offered for me to come back another day for the highlights since she had triple booked herself or something like that and had a client coming in an hour and a half. I politely declined the offer since I had booked a double process and didnt' feel like wasting another afternoon driving out there. Now we are at the drying my hair part before the highlights. I told her not to worry, I would dry my hair myself...the reason for this is when she dries my hair, it is not really dry...she likes to put highlights in while your hair is still wet and I would just rather the highlights be put in when my hair is dry because IMO it effects the highlights. She told me it doesn't and gets extremely offended if you have your own opinion on anything related to hair since she has been doing hair for many decades. But I too have had my hair done for decades, so I am not completely clueless about the process. Anyway, I simply said I would dry my own hair...most hair dressers would welcome the break. Not Carol. She literally ripped the hair dryer cord our of the socket and said "that's it!" or something to that effect. Crazy, insane, ego maniacal, control freak, none of these words quite describe her or the feeling you get when something like that happens. Meanwhile, my hair is still wet, so I kept my composure and quietly asked the other hair stylist (there are only 2, the owner, Dali, who is very sweet and she just hired a new gal who is also very sweet, so this review is no reflection on them) if I could use her blow dryer to finish drying my hair prior to leaving the salon. She obliged, then I left. There are no words to describe this kind of experience. Rude, unprofessional, ego maniac, doesn't come close. In closing I would avoid Carol of Malibu Barber Shop like the plague. This woman doesn't deserve your business, treats her customers like you know what (keeping this clean so no bots block this review) and throws a temper tantrum on you because you have an opinion that she doesn't share, she overbooked herself that day and you want to dry your own hair! BTW I am great tipper, so this was not about that. I would write more but Yelp is telling me I'm out of room. read more

Omg. I'm so sorry to leave this review but I am new to Malibu and wanted a hair cut. Went to Malibu barber. Woman was there to cut my hair. She said she has been cutting hair for 15 years.. however... when you look in the mirror and see that she cut along the ear hairline so high it looks bald on one ear and not on the other.... I don't get it. I would normally not leave a review and just not go back, however, every time I look in the mirror it hurts. Thank god whatever little I have left will grow again. read more

I have been coming to this barber for nearly three years and am saddened to say when I move out of town next month, I will be saying goodbye to these wonderful people! I cannot recommend this place more. With so few hair places in Malibu all thinking they are the best with over priced haircuts and limited customer service, Malibu Barber and their stylists shine above them all. Excellent. After 15 years of having the same (wonderful) hair cutter in NYC, having anyone else cut my hair was not something I was looking forward to. Dali rocks. Excellent haircut, professional all around, and a pleasure to chat with. This is a "barber shop" in name only. She and her colleagues are all licensed cosmetologists. This place has been closed for a few months due to COVID-19 restrictions and I hadn't had a haircut since the pandemic began so I was both anxious to get one and apprehensive about the safety of such close contact. My fears were justified when I walked in... the stylist was not wearing a mask and it is a small, enclosed space and no ventilation was on. She told me to go ahead and sit down and I asked, "Aren't you going to put on a mask?" and she said "Yes, I'm just cleaning up from the last customer." This is why we have a problem. Some people think they only have to wear a mask in a service business when they start working with a client. Wrong. COVID is spread and lingers in the air for long periods of time. Masks must be worn by employees AT ALL TIMES inside a building that serves the public. Haircuts are obviously done at very close range and indeed I could hear the stylist breathing right next to my ear. Then a phone call came in. The stylist stopped working on my hair, picked up the handset that hadn't been wiped down, took the call holding the handset for 3 minutes, then went immediately back to cutting my hair without washing her hands. In essence, she just transferred any possible virus contamination from one customer to another via the phone. I would not recommend anyone go to a salon like this anytime soon, and certainly not here. I was however, pleased with the haircut and the stylist was friendly and otherwise professional. read more

It's 50 dollars for a men's haircut, not including getting your hair washed or anything. As a college student nearby this is pretty ridiculous, I get that we live in Malibu and there's wealthy people everywhere but cmon I'm 19! They should give students discounts. Way tooooo expensive read more

Love this little shop! Very convenient for Malibu locals, as it's just down PCH past the pier. Erin trimmed my hair and did a superb blow-out styling job, for $70 which is normally $80 but she gave me a student discount (go Pepperdine!). The lady who owns the place was also extremely friendly and the vibe was very nice, conversational, but also efficient. I was in-and-out in less than an hour. And, a bonus? The owner's sweet dog Bernie sat on my lap almost the whole time. read more

What does any guy want from a salon? - a good haircut, friendly people, easy scheduling, decent atmosphere. This place has all of that and more. Everyone there is awesome. Rosemary has cut my hair on and off for 12 years, Jason cuts my sons hair, and I usually see Erin as she is there in the morning. Super easy access right off of PCH. In and out and on your way. I love this place used to live across the street and walk over. Jason is great he touched up my blonde roots and did a wonderful job.
