Visited Malibu while on vacation with friends. I was looking forward to an authentic Italian meal based on previous reviews. Service was slow and inconsistent. The best part was the owner's visits to the table. He would describe dishes that made you hungry. We ordered (at his recommendation) the eggplant parm, a fish dish and a shrimp scampi. The fish and shrimp were delicious but the eggplant that two of us ordered was not edible. The owner visited at the end of our meal where we shared the bad news about the eggplant dishes. He was very concerned that we had not had a good meal. He offered to cook up something else to make us happy. Of course we refused. He comped both of the eggplant dishes! He didn't have to do that but we appreciated it. Although this place was a disappointment, the owner's enthusiasm and commitment to great service and good food will bring us back for another try. read more

Malibu of Surfside. What an amazing meal. Went Herron Friday for dinner and the place was packed. Now I know why. The Calamari was so good perfectly fried in with an amazing dipping sauce. For dinner I had a chicken special in a Marsala sauce. Hands down the best Marsala sauce I have ever had. Followed with a fantastic cannoli I would highly recommend this restaurant. Absolutely a must-try! This was some of the best Italian food I've ever had. From the minute we walked in, everything was great. We were seated right away, our drinks never sat empty, and the appetizers were amazing. The owner even came over and took the time to explain the menu, which was a really nice touch. Every single thing we ordered was fresh, and you could tell it was all made from scratch. Everything tasted incredible. For how much food we got and how good it was, I honestly expected it to be a lot more expensive. 10/10. I'd recommend this place to anyone, and we'll definitely be coming back! read more

There are many Italian restaurants in the area but Malibu is phenomenal, especially if you order right. These guys wrote the book on veal parmigiana. Absolutely the best I've ever eaten. You won't believe the size of the serving. The pork chop pepper has a delicious grilled flavor and the sauce is unique. The steak Renaldo is also a winner. If you don't have room for dessert after the included garlic focaccia and salad (get the Caesar dressing), you must get a slice of Momma's cheesecake to go. Unlike NY or Italian cheesecake, this one includes sour cream for an amazingly light texture. read more

***DO NOT GO WITHOUT A RESERVATION**** We are in town for the first time in probably 15 years. Had a taste for Italian and this came up on Yelp. We went. Stood in hall for 10-15 minutes for someone to come to door. Only to be told they could not take 2 for walk-in. They were full on reservations only. This was at 6pm and was told at no point in the entire night could they accommodate a walk-in. The guy was very dismissive. I was taken aback by the "oh well" attitude. The Resturant was warm and inviting. Seated immediately in a cozy booth. The waiter was charming and attentive. I was between two dishes I asked the waiter Eggplant Parm or chicken Frances. He did tell everyone comes for the eggplant but he really liked the chicken. I ended up with the chicken. Big misty! The chicken was paper thin, tough and swimming in a lemon sauce which was too lemony. The meal came with a salad which was like eating leaves with stems. The salad dressing was honey mustard which was delicious. The pasta was cooked to perfection as were the dinner bread which was warm and very tasty. My husband had the shrimp scampi. He didn't care for the breading on the shrimp and mentioned they were very small and he wouldn't order it again. Over all the service was great, the food was average and not cheap. We had heard great things about this restaurant, but unfortunately had the worst service that I've ever experienced. It took about 15 minutes to place a drink order, then thirty minutes to receive a side salad that looked to have been sitting in the refrigerator for a while. Our server never came back to our table after taking our food orders, but was talking to his coworkers across the room for the rest of the night. Since the service was so bad and taking so long we asked to place a to go order for dessert, but were told that we should do that after we're done eating? Then no one ever brought our check, we had to go ask for the check so we could finally leave. The food was okay, but the experience was shockingly poor. Do not recommend. read more

This hidden gem on the tiny Surfside Beach street was amazing! As soon as you walk through the door, hang a left into a cozy little restaurant and are greeted warmly by the staff! Everything on the menu can be augmented for Gluten Free as their matriarch has Celiac so they are very knowledgeable! The pink lemonade is handmade and subtle but so fantastically refreshing! And... They have BREAD! Delicious GF bread with butter! Designated fryer to boot. The calamari was lightly coated and tender. I saved a couple pieces for my salad to bring a delightful crunch in lieu of croutons! Highly recommend ordering the baked ziti as an app to share and continue on your dinib experience! It's rare you find a Shrimp Parmesan (Especially GF breaded)! The saffron risotto and wood grilled scallops were nicely prepared (perfectly cooked). I opted for the off menu veal special with layers of zucchini and eggplant, marinara and topped with mozzarella. I'm not a huge fan of eggplant but this dish worked beautifully together. And it was massive... Took up almost the entire plate! Filled me up with leftovers for days... The staff was wonderful making sure our glasses didn't run dry and kept the bread coming! Everyone recommended we save room for dessert so we had items packed up as we started filling up! That being said ... The cheesecake was crust less, light, fluffy and divine! Would definitely recommend and plan to return next time we're back in town; just be sure you call and make a reservation! read more

Sorry one and done. Tried this place for the first time last night. Had the shrimp risotto. Shrimp were good. Risotto was dry and tasteless. I so wanted it to be what I envisioned after having a most delicious risotto at Luigi's two night prior. My friend had the seafood dish and left the very oily vegetables behind as well. My hubby got the Sunday pasta special which he enjoyed but felt bad for us. The kicker was when we got our bill. The waiter overcharged my meal by $12. When I questioned him, he immediately took the check back saying he charged me for the scallops risotto (which is not even on the menu). Then we scrutinized the bill further and seems like he charged my friend $2 more for her dish. Tsk tsk. He had to change that as well. I'm being generous with the 3 stars. read more

Reserved a table for 10 for Post Graduation Dinner at 7PM. Table was ready as requested. Service was painfully slow and we didn't receive our main courses until 9PM. I had shrimp scampi that didn't seem to have any garlic and had too much lemon flavor. The other guests were also disappointed with the quality of the food. The side salads were woefully small. The servers generally tried hard but I had to ask three times to get some Parmesan for the meal. Prices greatly exceeded the quality of the food. Unfortunately we're only in Myrtle Beach for three nights, but pretty sure my husband will talk me in to going one more time, it was that great! Oh, and the prices were absolutely phenomenal! This is my 2 nd review almost a year apart. This time was take out. And as much as I like the food here I can not justify $100. For 3 dishes of take out that 2 were skimpy. I really like the eggplant parm here. It's sliced thin and tastes like an Italian granny (that I know ) made it. However is was skimpy portion and the cheese was skimpy as well not even covering 3/4 of the dish. The Chicken parm was also very good and pounded thin. Also could have used more cheese to cover it. The other dish ( not sure of the name) is my MIL's favorite. It's shrimp with a kind of Masala sauce with mushrooms over linguine. I believe there were 5 small shrimp swimming in Marsala sauce. The restaurant provided some bread that was tasty. My overall opinion is that sadly Malibu reduced their portion size & may have raised their prices. Unfortunately, I did not pick up the food to go & didn't see the itemized bill. I believe the shrimp dish was $38! Insane. Whatever it was it wasn't worth the cost. Next time we consider Italian food we will try some place else. read more

Malibu's of Surfside is dangerous... because once you eat here, you'll start comparing all other Italian food to it and getting disappointed. The food is insanely fresh and ridiculously good -- the kind where you stop talking mid-sentence because you need a moment. On top of that, the owner came out, spent time talking with us, was incredibly kind to our kids, and genuinely made us feel welcome. Not rushed, not fake -- just good people. Amazing food, amazing hospitality, and the kind of place that reminds you why family-owned restaurants are the best. We'll absolutely be back (hungry). read more

I'm sure I won't be able to add anything positive that hasn't already been mentioned in one of the previous 600+ reviews, but I have to try! My Italian wife, who is verrrrrrrry picky about Italian restaurants, won't stop raving about the eggplant parm. The dishes I had (yes, plural), were both amazing! The owner had food/wine knowledge for days and a personality to match. Unfortunately, we don't live in town, but if we did, we'd be here every night. One of the locals told us "in-season" reservations are tough because it is soooo packed, so plan accordingly and make the time to have a meal here. You won't regret it! read more

Ive been wanting to try this place since I moved to myrtle beach, and unfortunately I was very disappointed. Walking in, the ambiance was amazing. Cute restaurant, great music, beautiful table set up, and some regulars said they've been coming here for years. They serve bread to start which was pretty good. That and the salad which came with the meals were good too. My husband got a Caesar and I got the peppercorn dressing. These were the only things we enjoyed about our meal. We started with the mussels which weren't very good. Sauce didn't have much flavor and the mussels didn't have the best flavor. I ate them but my husband wouldn't. I tried the shrimp Monica which had a marsala sauce, but it tasted more tomato than marsala. It wasn't bad but nothing special. My husband tried a veal special for dinner and he didn't like it at all. Our bill was around $100 and we left very disappointed. Maybe we tried the wrong dishes here, but neither of us want to go back. read more

This was the most disappointing restaurant experience my wife and I have ever had. We've been looking forward to coming here for a long time and not a single thing about the night was good. We made a 7:30 reservation and weren't sat until 8:45. Several other people made reservations and all were sat well over an hour after they made theirs too. We were all left to wait in a cramped hallway and very rarely ever checked on. When we were seated, we didn't have a server come over to us for a full 15 minutes after we sat. Water was never refilled the entire duration of dinner except for one time when we had asked 3 separate times. We were told we'd get two free apps to make up for the time. They came out 30 minutes after we were seated and they were both TERRIBLE. The eggplant rollatini was soggy and overcooked. The fried capellini cakes tasted awful and so did the sauce that came with it, it was watered down. Then comes our entrees... My scallop risotto was undercooked, the risotto was hard and had no flavor. The scallops were undercooked. My wife ordered the lamb chop special they had and they were all overcooked. For a 7:30 reservation to not be out of the door until 10:15 and to be served absolutely awful food with TERRIBLE service from unorganized servers is inexcusable. I seriously cannot believe how awful this place was. It's under new ownership as of recently and it is being run into the ground. So sad because they have had such a great reputation for such a long time and it's being ruined. We were really looking forward to this place. read more

There are much better Italian restaurants than Malibu. The service was awful. Our server was nonexistent after he took our order. We had to wave down other employees to get a second glass of wine. Our server never delivered our food never came back to see if our food was OK never came back to get a dessert order and never came back to even give us our check. We literally had to get up from our table and go to the bar and the bartender took care of our check. The food was average. The atmosphere was just OK. The music selection was good. We are in no hurry to go back and quite frankly doubt that we will. read more

I chalk up the service issue to a very full house of patrons. Three of us took advantage of the specials for the day - eggplant parmigiana (best we ever had!) Sunday sauce and Veal Francoise. We highly recommend the veThe Sunday sauce reminded me of my youth with sausages, meatballs and braciola cooked for many hours low and slow and served with penne pasta. We are celebrating our 41st Wedding Anniversary and visited Malibu of Surfside. We missed out on the Sunday Specials last year by going on a weekday. The owner stopped by to see if we were attended to and acknowledged we were. Wyatt was our server and was very polite and explained what the specials were. I heard a lot about Mama's lasagna and of course had to order that for the main course. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmesan. The owner explained the Sunday Sauce which sounded very good. I wish I had a picture of my cannoli... but ate it so fast. The absolutely a die for cannoli. Let me tell you, I do not even like this kind of desert, but suddenly I felt like I would eat it. Came to this lovely place. As soon as I walked in, a charming girl welcomed me, I ordered to go 1 cannoli and 1 cheesecake. I cannot even describe how tasty my cannoli was. I am definitely coming back tomorrow for at least 3 of them. My cheesecake is WOW! 10/10 experience. This place is so beautiful. Can't describe it but felt like 2000 Christmas, the best one.
