The tom yum soup is the worst I've ever had. Absolutely no hint of lemongrass, galangal, or makrut in the broth. Instead I was served flavorless near-boiling water with some drops of oil inside. Went here to grab a late lunch on a Saturday and the place was empty except for one other table. The waitress came over to get our drink orders pretty quickly, but then it took a while for her to come back for our food orders, to make the food, and even longer for us to go track her down for the bill. We ended up finding the takeout containers on our own, because no one came to check back in. This wouldn't be an issue if the restaurant was super busy, but we were the only ones there at this point. As for the food, we ordered the satay, basil fried rice, and pad see ew. The chicken satay had a decent amount of spices and the picked veg, side fresh cabbage and mint, and sauce went well with it. And I have tried a lot of Thai restaurants all across California, Europe, New York, Boston, etc. I seriously think this restaurant was pulled straight out of Thailand with how authentic their dishes are! Hands down the best Thai food in Vermont, bar none, ask anyone who has eaten here. I recommend the Khao Soi to every one who comes here - solely because it's one of the few Thai restaurants in the ENTIRE USA that offers this northern Thai delicacy. Amazing Thai food! I wasn't sure what to expect driving to Essex, but the food here is as good as if not better than some Thai restaurants I've eaten at in Southern California. The pad kee mao is flavorful with a spicy rich sauce coating wide chewy rice noodles. Keeping the rice noodles that intact and chewy is an art form. There are a medley of veg like bamboo shoots, bell peppers, mushrooms, etc. in it. The pad phet fish was also spicy and rich, with a thick curry sauce coating fried fish fillets and numerous vegetables. Plentiful fried basil was a great touch that added a herbaceous note to the dish. The red curry was my least favorite of the dishes but was still solid. It had a subtle sweet flavoring and was more sweet than spicy (it seemed to feature coconut milk quite heavily). I would opt to get it spicier next time to balance it.
