I wish I had tried this place sooner! Not only was the food super fresh a bad fantastic but the customer service from the initial phone call to pick up was out standing. We had 3 dishes, including a salad, noodle dish and rice roll and all 3 were fantastic. As someone who celiac disease who recently got sick while eating at a different restaurant recently, it was super reassuring how knowledgeable the staff was about food content and what was already gluten free. We were overall pretty disappointed with Viet Thai. For starters the pick up experience was chaotic and they gave our order to another customer. Luckily, the guy who received our order hadn't left yet or opened the food containers so we were able to get our food without having to wait too long. Needed some real vietnamese food. Went by the joint and ordered vermicelli chicken. I was not disappointed. The owner dropped by my table and talked about his career here. He has been cooking these delicious dishes for more than 23 years (with no vacation). You can literally taste the experience in every bite. I really enjoyed the food and service. We love Viet Thai. Such fresh and delicious food. Family owned and very consistently good. One of our favorite places.

We stopped at this small, unpretentious, and clearly well-liked restaurant after visiting the Champlain Valley Fair. (Loved the cool 4-H exhibits, beautiful horses, and other farm animals -- but we needed a break from the xenophobic Trumpies who were attempting to eclipse the antique tractors, the high decibel carnival rides, and the relentless marketing of corn dogs and maple creemees.) There seemed to be a lot of regulars and a steady stream of customers at Viet Thai. It wasn't long before the food restored me to a good place. This restaurant serves a truly excellent, rich, deeply beefy pho bo broth that's clearly made by a master. Pho noodles were perfectly al dente, and the rare, lean bò tái was of excellent quality, very tender, though sliced thicker than what I consider ideal. You don't need any garnishes other than the barebones basil and mung bean sprouts provided, a tiny squeeze of lime if you must. Anything else feels like an adulteration. Summer rolls were fair, their fillings balanced. Chicken dumplings had thick skins, but their primary consumer loved them. We didn't find the Thai offerings we tried on the menu (i.e. a pad ki maow unusually made with small pieces of rolled-up, wide rice noodles, which sort of resembled campanelle) to be as strong as the Vietnamese offerings. My suspicion is that Thai offerings are an afterthought on the menu, intended to increase crowd appeal. Folks who worked there were gruff -- not prone to smiling purely for purposes of social lubrication -- but kind. We are in Burlington not infrequently. I'd make the drive out to Essex to have this pho again. Two bowls next time. read more

Pretty good food but service was just ok. Tempted to give 3 stars because of the service. 2 teens were in charge of the front area, i.e. taking orders, delivering food,and cleaning the tables. Definitely felt like the male was not taking the job seriously at all, almost like we were a nuisance or disturbance. Female was very nice and accommodating. Both were commenting after a large table with children left how dirty/messy children were. This isn't a fancy place so I don't expect prim and proper but politeness re: guests doesn't seem like too much to as for. With that said, the prices are really reasonable and the food was fresh, plentiful, and yummy. Had to ask for mint, basil, lime, and green sprouts with my pho tai (did not come and when I asked, was told it didn't come with it. They got it anyways...). Pho was good though could have used a little more flavor. Good amount of meat in a small. Bun hoi with shrimp and pork was the highlight. Super fresh and delicious. Got an app size of spring rolls (the fried kind) to add to it. App came with 6 yummy skinny rolls. Hubby got 3 and I threw 3 on my bun hoi. Perfection. First time ordering food here and will never do it again. We ended up throwing our food away. Our sauce had mold in it and when we called to let them know, they openly admitted they knew their sauce was old but chose to serve it to us anyways. If that's the case I can only imagine what they know is old in the fridge and chose to serve it always. Disgusting. Eat at you're own risk. Thank you so much to the family of Viet Thai. We have been hoping that they would be able to return with appropriate precautions for Covid. As they do when preparing excellent food, managing for Gluten sensitivity and/or vegetarians, so they did with their decision to open later than some other restaurants. Their food is by far my most favorite in the Chittenden County area. Since I need gluten-free foods, I've tried most Thai or Vietnamese takeout places in our area and beyond. We have favorites on their menu and too many to list. I think my all time favorite is "Banh Xeo Tom, Ga, Heo" which I have not seen elsewhere. It is a light crepe made from rice flour and coconut milk overstuffed with delicious fillings. (#37 on the menu)... I usually find that it is enough for two meals but it is really hard to stop after eating half! Enjoy and support this wonderful family run business! And, as another reviewer mentioned, it is also an incredible and heartwarming contrast to the craziness at the Champlain Fair. read more

My boyfriend and I are regulars for take-out at Viet Thai. Their food is absolutely amazing and their portions are perfect. I am low-key obsessed with their pad thai and my boyfriend always get the bun bo (beef with vermicelli noodles) and enjoys it more and more every time he orders it. They know us by name and they personalize our order for us frequently. They are always super quick and we love that we have gotten to know the front of house staff which I think is the owner's daughter. We had quite a laugh with her when she noticed that our normal order was larger than usual and I had to explain that I couldn't decide between two entrees and had to just order both!!! They also have their own hot sauce that is a must have with any order. This place is a total gem and we are so glad that we stumbled upon it by accident. Finally found a place that serves decent Thai iced tea. It was a little more milky than I liked, but I could still taste the tea coming through. As for food, I saw on their "House Specials" menu wall, Tom Som (green papaya salad). Be still my heart...I love papaya salad, so of course I had to have it. I ordered one and asked them to make it spicy. It was super tasty and had a perfect balance of sour, sweet, salty, and herbaceous-ness (from the basil). Because I asked for spicy, they finely chopped some red Thai chilies into the salad and it burned sooo good. I also had to try their pho so I ordered a small bowl. The noodles were perfectly cooked, nice and chewy, not too soft. Even though the broth was rich and tasty, it was a bit too greasy for my liking. I stopped here at 2:15 on a Thursday to have a late lunch. The open sign was on, they had an open flag hanging out front, and Yelp states that they close at 9:00pm. Our Waze app states that they close at 2:30 so we figured even if Yelp was wrong we would still arrive in time. When we walked in the hostess said that they closed in 15 minutes and weren't accepting customers. Cool, turn your open sign off at 2 then and don't say you close at 2:30 when in reality you close at 2, that's not how open hours work. read more

Absolutely worth stopping by. The food is Devine and they offer many scrumptious vegan options such as lemongrass tofu. Their peanut sauce is addictive, be warned. I've tried other Vietnamese restaurants and they don't even come close. The restaurant is family owned and operated so you feel like you're getting the best home cooking. Ingredients are super fresh and the food is mainly healthy by nature, factor in reasonable prices and good location and you have a winner.
