Visiting Magnolia today and went to lunch after at the best BBQ place
    April Gauer J.

We went there today and the owner was the one of the nicest people we have meet since visiting . Their food is AMAZING!!!!! The best Bar-BQ sandwich and ribs I have ever had and my 11 year old finished her whole meal. You have to try this place!

Sliced and chopped brisket with a thin homemade barbecue sauce were delcious and just what we hoped to enjoy passing through Texas. You know it was good when we saw the owner taking out wood to the smoker. Would highly recommend and you won't be disappointed!

Truly a hole in the wall kind of place. You'll have to be OK with the lack of sanitation (to be fair, none of us got sick eating here or anything, it's just, don't expect clean bathrooms and unlimited paper towels) Probably as homemade as you can get of BBQ's in this area? The owners were down to earth and seem very authentic and soulful. Our food was not easy to eat as the BBQ gets quite saucy yet there weren't a lot of containers or utensils to make eating easier. If you order a sandwich, expect to eat it handheld with wrapping paper that gets soaked by the juice/sauce. I can't judge a great BBQ as I'm not a connoisseur but I can't say this is the best I've ever had. So sorry, I'll have to leave my rating as average.

Bottom Line: A true Mom & Pop hole-in-the-wall joint serving fine BBQ with their own twist on it at half the price of others around town. Top Line: I ordered their beef plate (BBQ beef brisket, beans, potato salad) from the wonderfully friendly gentleman manning the counter and got a bottle of Big Red pop from the cooler to wash it down. Price astonished me at only a nickel north of a tenner (including tax) for the whole shootin' match. Potato salad was very different from most. Texture was soft, creamy, & smooth, as if made with mostly mashed potatoes. Flavor was quite sweet with a very distinct but hard to identify counter-flavor interwoven. My best guess is that it was pickle juice, perhaps sweet pickles creating the sweetness. Beans looked to be baked beans from a can. But the flavor was richer & more complex than that, leaning less on sweetness and more toward cumin earthiness and roundness. BBQ beef brisket texture was less fatty and more solid than others I've had. It was like a tender beef sirloin roast in structure. It was much less starkly smoked than others as well. While its smokiness played in, it was subtle enough to not overwhelm the sauce. The sauce itself was tasty & tangy with a slight vinegary snap, instead of the more typically found sweet (brown sugar or molasses) or hot (chiles! chiles! chiles!) sauces. There was plenty of the sauce for dipping chunks of the meat as well as sopping up with the provided two slices of sturdy'ish white bread. The very cordial gentleman asked if I like chili and graciously brought me a sample upon the enthusiastic & affirmative answer I gave him. The chili was very, very meaty. Lots of fried burger up to it's chest in thinnish broth that tasted of tomato & spices, particularly cumin again. As for the bottle of Big Red, it's the same as ever. Tastes like the bubble gum you chewed as a kid and contains enough sugar to keep C&H in business until forever. If your nutritionist disapproves of your drink choices, ask them what other drink will provide 122% of your daily recommended sugar intake in each bottle. That should slow them down for a few visits. So when you're in the Silos area of Waco and want to avoid the craziness of all that Magnolia madness happening a block or two away, drop into Mama & Papa B's Bar-B-Q for the very tasty, very inexpensive, very low key, and much closer to the ground antidote.

I walked in the place was quiet and slightly aged. The staff of three were hard at work. I requested a chopped beef sandwich, beans, and potato salad. The beans are mouthwatering good. The potato salad was a bit sweet but the cook still makes it to the family reunion The sandwich was so good I stopped eating because I felt someone looking at me. I was eating it like I hadn't ate in days. This chopped beef sandwich is why I will be back. If you are craving BBQ that's exactly what you will get here.

All I'll say is this is THE BEST BBQ ever!! Wow

Mama & Papa B's saved our Thanksgiving! A lot of restaurants were closed on Thanksgiving, but not this one. They were super accommodating to us and had great service. We felt welcomed. On top of that the food was AMAZING. The best BBQ of all Texas; tender tri-tip and pork ribs. The sausage was delicious too. The sides were good too - especially the potato salad! Would recommend anyone here - can't wait to go back!

    This joint is small.

Mamma and Pappa B's is just a few blocks off of I-35, so it's a great stop when passing through Waco. Watch for the TINY building that only houses 4 tables, because if you blink you really will miss it. Going for almost 33 years, this truly is a divey, mom and pop bbq joint. Walked in and was greeted by Papa. Told him it was our first time...as we were looking over the menu on the wall Papa just started piling food into a container and said "Let me get you a sample of everything o'er here." Ok! No arguments from us. I kept looking out the front door towards our car as our "only child" was in it (my pound puppy and the weather was cool...come on people!) and Papa most of noticed. I told him I was making sure my dog was OK and he ordered my husband "Go out there and park that car right in front of the door...it don't matter...that's just fine." Ahhh... Got our fixin's...ribs, brisket, 2 kinds of Elgin sausage, potato salad, and pinto beans. Everything was good...just a little bit different approach to bbq than you might expect from a traditional Texas smokehouse. The meats are smoked right out a back, as can be attested by the large smoke ring on the meats (especially the sausage) and the fact that Papa showed us the smoker (big one). So, here's the difference...it seems that after the meats come off the smoke they are sliced into serving sizes and all placed into a bath of sauce. So, this is a "wet" type of bbq. Brisket was good, my husband and I actually both enjoyed the sausage a lot (which is usually not a preference for either of us), and the ribs were fall off the bone tender. The scratch made potato salad and pinto beans were A-OK. There's S&P right on the table if you prefer a little more seasoning. As we ate (we were the only patrons there at the time) we all watched TV and spoke out answers to Family Feud. When we had just about cleared out plates, Papa walked over and said "ya'll get enough?"...as he reached his hand down to take the container to put more food in it. Oh my gosh! "No sir, we're fine. Thank you." After we cleaned our table off and stood at the counter to pay $11 for the Q and 2 sodas (wow!), Papa told us to each take a piece of Mamma's cake. "Ok, thanks!" Strawberry for me, chocolate vanilla swirl for my hubby. Now I am not much on sweets at all, but I took one bite of that strawberry cake and it was like a part of my past slapped me in the face. A feeling of nostalgia came over me that I can't really put into words. I'll just say that when I was a kid my mom made me a strawberry birthday cake each year...and I don't think I've had a piece since the last one. It was all I could do to fight back a tear from dripping down my cheek. Papa must have picked up on my unreasonable emotional response (silly girl!)...he told me to "come on and take another one." I kindly declined. This may not be "your" type of BBQ, but it is how it's been done by Mamma and Pappa for over 30 years, so it's good enough for me. And when you go (and you will) it won't be like going to a restaurant at all. It'll be like visiting your grandparent's house, them having food ready for you, and trying to feed you way too much...all the while with that little sparkle in their eye that expresses how much they enjoy your company. It truly is like going home. And, sometimes, home is a really good place to be. We'll be back to see you real soon. Xo

The beef rib was huge. It was well cooked, seasoned well, and without a heavy overpowering smoke taste and smell. The meat was tender and juicy. The pork rib meat was also perfectly cooked, the seasoning was one of the best mix of savory I had in a while. Instead of a special restaurant dinner for anniversary we thought we would eat a couple ribs. The adage @you get what you pay for" holds up well here. But the bill was exurban and this was before the current high price of meat & everything else. My husband said that I would not want to know what he paid which means over $100. I hope they can hang on until their supplies are more affordable. The cost will I am sure be a disadvantage. What we paid would have been or useful in filling my pantry. That being said, it was one of the most enjoyable meals we've brought home. If we could afford it we would definitely be our go-to place. We are looking forward to iur anniversary in a couple months when we won't feel guilty about paying a big price for a meal. I will go for flavor over fancy every time and Helberg fits that shoe.

Halfway between Dallas and Georgetown is a Rudy's BBQ in Waco. It's on the north side of IH-35, but…read moreeasy enough to get to even if you are heading south. There is construction going on, so you may need to exit early and stay on the frontage road to avoid missing it. Parking lot out front is generally empty because most people park in the back. Gas pumps out front are usually available without a wait. When you enter, you'll pass the country store where you can buy sauces and jams and such to take for gifts or yourself. Someone is usually there to greet you as you head inside. They have a line barricade that you have to weave through in order to get to the register to place your order. The wall menu board is positioned so you can read and decide what you want while you are in line. Meats are often ordered by weight, but you can get a sandwich if you don't know how much of an item to order. While in line, you'll zigzag by a large ice bucket of cold drinks in bottles and cans. I always skip these and get sweet iced tea from the self-serve station. You'll also pass a refrigerator of delicious sides and desserts. Be sure to load up on coleslaw, potato salad, pecan pie, and banana pudding. There's more, but these are some of our favorites. At the register, they will put together a large plastic bin lined with butcher paper and then load it up with your meal choices. We love the extra moist brisket, jalapeño sausage link, smoked turkey, corn on the cob, and new potatoes. For the meat, it is fun to order a 1/2 lbs. and a whole link to share with your party. If you want to make your own sandwich, ask for a half or whole loaf of bread depending on how many sandwiches you want to dress. They will load it all into your bin. If you are getting drinks from the drink station, be sure to get a Rudy's cup. You can bring it back for cheap refills on your next visit. They have both unsweet and sweet tea along with the usual soda fountain drinks. Before heading to your table, collect plastic flatware, paper napkins, and more butchers paper to set down as a place mat for each person. They also have a paper boat trays that you can load up with pickles, onions, and peppers for the sandwiches you will make at your picnic table. Each picnic table has condiments available. They have a full bodied BBQ sauce that is a bit sweet and spicy, and a Sissy BBQ sauce for those who need something more bland. There are tables inside and outside. Lots of tables can handle large groups, but there are also small 2-seater picnic tables. Once you are done chowing down, wad up the butcher paper with everything inside and deposit it into one of the many large trash bins. You can also ask for a bag to go and small containers to take items on the road. My family has always enjoyed their visits to Rudy's. They are located around the state of Texas, but they even have some in AZ, NM, OK, and CO. Not really great if your a vegetarian or on a diet for cholesterol or heart issues, but if you are young and healthy, it can be a nice meal for a splurge or cheat day.
