First time here and ordered way too much for 2 adults, 7 year old and 1 year old. Our bill came out to be $80 (little pricey for dim sum/lunch). Didn't get to take photos of everything but posting what I captured. Giving this review 3 stars because of the pricing and soup dumplings. We had high expectations but thought they were okay. 6/10 would recommend. Try it for yourself.
I went here with my boyfriend on Saturday around 4:45pm and we were able to get seated immediately without a reservation (but as we were leaving, it was getting really busy/lots of people waiting). We ordered the crab and pork soup dumplings to start. They had lots of soup inside; the flavor was really good and the dumpling sauce was perfect. For entrées, we got the beef chow, fun, and the braised pork belly with tea egg. The beef chow fun had a really good smoky grilled flavor and the beef was very tender. The tea egg that came with the pork belly was amazing! I wish the pork belly was a little more tender, but the flavor was amazing! The service was great our waitress was really attentive and kind! Inside was very spacious and elegantly decorated.
Mama Chang has been on my list for a while, so I was excited to finally try this modern Chinese spot in Fairfax, VA. The restaurant itself is gorgeous--very spacious, stylish, and great for both groups and date nights. Service was good overall, though our server wasn't as attentive as we would've liked, especially as the meal went on. Food-wise, it was a bit of a mixed bag, but there were definitely some highlights. The hand-pulled noodles with beef brisket had a great chewy texture, which I loved, but the broth could've used more depth and punch. The scallion bubble pancake with curry sauce was a standout--absolutely delicious and a must-try. The Peking duck roll was just okay, and the crab and pork soup dumplings were also fine, but nothing memorable (Bob Shanghai in Rockville still takes the win for soup dumplings in the area). On the other hand, the Gang Hood fried chicken was excellent--crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and very flavorful. The pork and shrimp shumai were plump, juicy, and solid as well. We ended with the citrus coconut pudding, which was decent, but there was way too much whipped cream compared to the pudding itself. Overall, Mama Chang is worth checking out for the ambiance and some standout dishes, even if not everything completely wowed. I'd definitely come back and try more from the menu.
This was my first time here. I came on a weekday for lunch, so it wasn't very busy. However, I did drive by here on a Sunday and it was packed. Their food seems to be on the authentic side based on the menus and dishes. They didn't have the Americanized dishes that would be found at a random Chinese restaurant (General Tso's Chicken). The prices are pretty high for the entrees as well. We ordered the following: -Pork and Shrimp spring roll (2) - these were basic, nothing that stands out about them. -Sesame Golden Mountain Beef - the flavor was good, but it looked more like chicken feet and not beef. It was crispy, which definitely added to the flavor/texture. -Ganghood Fried Chicken - This was mostly skin and barely any meat. I wouldn't order it again. -Rice Cake and Brown Sugar (5) - the texture was great, as was the flavor; however there wasn't much cohesion. It seems like the brown sugar was dumped on there on there vs. syrup type consistency. The service was okay, our server was available when we needed her. However, she mostly stood to the side of our table on her phone, watching something. There's plenty of parking, but can get packed especially on a weekend. Would I return? I'd like to try their AYCE tapas
I was very excited to try Mama Chang! It's local to me and i'm surprised i haven't gotten a chance to try it yet. This is one of those places where toooo many things looked good on the menu and we already knew we would have to come back to try more dishes. But here is what we got: Scallion pancake - looked very cool and appetizing but i wish there was a bit more scallion. It was also a bit oily. The curry sauce it came with definitely made the dish through. Pork and crab dumplings - these were amazing, very flavorful on their own. I typically like a lot of chili oil in my dumplings for flavor but these did not need it at all. Salt and Pepper Shrimp - So perfectly crispy and delicious! We loved the onions it came with as well because it gave it a nice freshness. Peking duck roll - this was my least favorite item, the duck sort of had a smell to it that I could not stand. It was also extremely oily. Grandmas Sizzling Pork Belly - this was one of our favorites from the night! Just the perfect about of mouth numbing flavor. Hunan Chicken Chow Mein - very delicious and great big portion. Hokkaido Beer - Yuzu was my husband's fave and I loved the peach. The service here was great. Our waiter was super attentive to our needs. We are definitely coming back here!
Our group of 13 came to Mama Chang for a birthday dinner, and we were seated promptly with our reservation at two large tables. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and comfortable. For our table, we ordered Red Chili Oil Beef Tendon, Scallion Bubble Pancake, Fried Cauliflower, Taiwanese Salt & Pepper Fried Chicken, Mala Hot Pot, Fresh Green Sichuan Pepper Fish, Pork Belly with Qianye Tofu, and Combination Fried Rice. All the dishes came out quickly and were flavorful and delicious. Our favorites were the fish and the mala hot pot. The hot pot was tasty and fragrant, with shrimp, chicken, beef, veggies, and lotus root. The fish dish is more like a soup; the fish was tender and came with noodles and veggies, and it had a nice kick to it. I can only handle mild food, and even though both dishes were marked with two peppers, they were very manageable. The other table ordered different dishes and said everything was great too. Our server, Tommy, was attentive and friendly throughout the night. The staff stored the birthday cake we brought and brought it out after the meal. Tommy also provided paper plates and plastic forks, which we really appreciated. Everyone in our party agreed the food was excellent and the service was great. We highly recommend Mama Chang for group dinners and celebrations!
Wow! If you haven't been to Mama Chang's, you are missing out! It is an authentic Chinese cultural experience complete with family style dining. They have so many different dishes of all flavors. Everything is so full of flavor and spice if you choose. It's unbelievably great! I am a huge fan of the spicy chicken fried rice and always take leftovers because of how gigantic the rice is. It's enough for 3 portions/servings! The staff are super friendly and helpful. P.S. Try the fried iced cream...
This has been on my list of places to visit for a while now. I have always heard rave reviews about this restaurant if you wanted good Chinese food. Came with the family and had ourselves a feast! We got a large assortment of different dishes to sample and thought the food was decent. There were some good dishes and some that were not so good. One of our favorites was the Peking Duck - crispy skin, juicy meat and not super oily. Other dishes we enjoyed were the crispy rice with tomato and beef, the stir fried snow pea tips and the scallion bubble pancake. I definitely think this is a bit pricey for Chinese food but it was decent. Not sure I would give it the absolutely stellar reviews I've heard, but still good. Everything we ordered was delicious. The service was great. They made good suggestions. The restaurant was very clean. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their dishes. The highlights were the peking duck, sauteed snow pea tips, and green beans. We were celebrating a friend's birthday and they brought out a free dessert with a candle on it. The fermented rice cake was perfect because it was not too sweet. There's plenty of parking available in their lot.
Came for lunch with the hubby & had the best lunch we've had in a while! Service was so quick & efficient. Space is nicely decorated, spacious, & clean. Everything we tried was delicious! -Scallion bubble pancake: SO good! Love it with the curry sauce. A bit greasy but a must order. -Garlic cucumber salad: personally loved this but super strong spicy garlicky flavor. Cucumbers are tossed in a creamy sauce. -Hot & sour soup with duck meat: husband's personal fave. Great duck flavor too! -Pan fried chives dumpling: delicious & meaty filling. Good size. -Half Chang's roast duck: phenomenal! Bony but the meat is so tasty. The sauce over rice is *Chef's kiss* -Egg yolk pineapple buns: love! So good. Love the yolk filling & it's not too sweet. A great finisher to a wonderful meal. So excited to come back & try their peking duck & other offerings!
I'd come back here in a heartbeat. This place was recommended by a friend. They have an all you can eat option for $28/pp. You can't beat the price. The quality of the food was amazing. Everything came out fresh. I only tried seafood and veggie options. And everything I ordered, I'd get again! Shrimp fried rice, green beans, salt&pepper shrimp(not pictured), fried fish, scallion bubble cake, cucumber salad, spring rolls(not pictured). I literally could not pick a favorite. AYCE options is M-F from 11am-3pm.

Wow oh wow!! Incredible Chinese restaurant in Fairfax! I never really crave Chinese food, but wow the food was incredible! The restaurant is HUGE and so clean. It had nice planters and dividers with each booth. Chow fun: such a good wok stir fry, spicy when hot, noodles not cooked all the way through for good texture Peking duck roll appetizer: I wasn't expecting it to be in egg roll form but it was piping hot and stuffed with duck Branzino garlic sauce: huge fish, a lot of meat, not too salty, very fresh and flavorful *takes 30 min to cook Desserts: Pineapple bun: has very liquidy salted egg inside so eat carefully bc it does come out quick! Yogurt parfait: wow incredible! Not too sweet, great texture like yogurt but not. It was so so good! This was a lunch meal for 2 and the price total was $88 for sooo much food. Mama Chang is definitely one of the better Chinese restaurant around the area, I've always had a good time whenever I go. For the food, I got pecking duck alongside many dimsum dish. They were all really well made and seasoned very well. The waiters was super quick too and they were attentive to my gesture when I ask for anything, which is nice. The place itself feels pretty modern and pretty open. There's a lot of people at all time but it never feels too crowded. Overall I would come back, it's a good place. read more

Mama Chang is the baby of legendary Chinese chef and restaurateur Peter Chang & pays homage to family recipes & contributions from generations of the Chang women, including Peter's grandmother, mother, wife & also a celebrated Chef (Lisa Chang) & his daughter. The menu is Hunan, Szechuan, & Hubei home-style Chinese cooking & Mama Chang is known for their numbing dishes which pack some heat. The decor is stylish and clean, and the place was busy on a nice June Saturday night. The host staff was not very welcoming. They barely acknowledged us when we arrived for our reservation, and they completely ignored us when we left. Our server was outstanding and made our experience amazing! She had great menu knowledge and was very attentive to our every need. We ordered a wide variety of items: Peking duck spring rolls, garlic cucumber salad, shumai, chive bubble pancake, pan-fried yuanbao dumplings, and beef jerky to start, followed by flounder with tofu, five-spice catfish, a half Peking duck, sautéed bok choy with garlic, ghost pepper beef, and fried rice dessert rolls. And, of course, wine!!! As others have mentioned, everything came out fast, fresh, & hot but we found most of it to be underwhelming. The standouts for us were the cucumber salad, catfish, bok choy & the ghost pepper beef. We were celebrating a birthday, so we definitely enjoyed ourselves, and I would go back if someone picked it, but it would not be my first choice for Chinese cuisine. read more
Ambiance: modern decor with a lot of windows and natural light. Light wood throughout with plants. Service: very attractive waitress. She came by to check and and made sure we had beers when we are low. Food came out pretty fast on a busy Friday evening. Good: classic Peter Chang dishes. The soup du ml olings had good flavors. Scallion bubble pancake is what I've come to know from Peter Chang. The Mala hot pot is considered 'dry hot pot' since it does have sauce but not in a broth you dip protein and veggies in. This one had szchehan numbing spices so be cautious if you can't handle spice. Finally made it here after it being open for about 2-3 yrs now?!? I've driven by and never paid attention to the sign. what i'd get again: pan fried dumplings scallion bubble pancake - great texture what i wouldn't grandma's pork belly - a little too oily and fatty for me the peking duck flavor was good but also a little on the too fatty side. their pancakes are super thin and great though. the service and interior is good! plenty of seating and great for families read more

Authentic Chinese restaurant in Fairfax! This place definitely has some of the best Chinese food I've had in the dmv area. Service was extremely fast and ambiance was very casual. Restaurant wasn't the cleanest though-- there were quite a bit of food scraps on the seats when we were first seated, so we had to move seats. - Chili beef: 10/10 (spicyyyy so be wary if you're not into spicy food! The beef was very tender and flavorful) - Mala hot pot: 10/10 (loved the fish and shrimp inside the hot pot. Good portion size and very flavorful) - Sesame noodles: 100/10 (my favorite dish that we got!! It had a really nice sesame, creamy flavor that added texture to the dish.) - Crab and pork soup dumplings: 8/10 (good dumplings, but the dumpling skin was on the thicker side. I do prefer thinner skin on my dumplings, like the ones at din tai fung) - Crispy Peking duck roll: 100/10 (the perfect appetizer to start of the meal! It was very crunch and it was filled with Peking duck) Overall, loved the food so much so I'm definitely going to be back when I'm craving Chinese food!! read more

I had a really good first visit to this restaurant on Friday for lunch. I saw a TikTok about their AYCE weekday special and decided to check into it. My neighbor and I were the first to arrive the day. The decor was very serene. Our waitress made some good suggestions and we tried a lot of items. The food was well-seasoned and came out hot. My only complaint is that the cost of the to-go containers was very high considering the options -- a short or tall cylinder container ($16 for the tall). Our waitress gave some explanation but it was not sufficient nor did it make much sense. Other than that, I would return to try something else another time. read more

Been here a few times now and the food is really solid, I'd consider it modern dimsum. With the service being pretty amicable and Western friendly, I'd consider this a worthwhile restaurant to try once in a while. the over ambiance is pretty low-key with some customer opting to wear business casual. Scallion bubble pancake: on the greasy side but a fun modern concept (not your traditional scallion pancake), def a convo starter. 7/10 Duck egg rolls: duck was super dry but generous. The sauce was a weird paring I thought. But it was piping hot and crispy. 7/10 XLB: perfectly steamed with great taste. would consider the inside filling needs a little more bite. 7/10 Shiumai: my favorite here, love the flavor and size of the shiumai, 9/10 Spicy fresh flounder fried w/cumin: crispy tasty fish with lovely floral spicy flavor, 9/10 Mama's hand pulled noodles with beef brisket: really good fresh noodles with good brisket, 8/10 shrimp rice rolls: fresh and lovely sweet soy sauce flavor 9/10 fried taro balls: freshly fried and good flavor and sweet savory ground pork fillling 8/10 Beef chowfun: soft rice noodles, so good, lovely complex beef flavor , 9/10 Turnip cake: fresh and soft, savory tasty 9/10 peking duck: quite good and flavorful with freshly steamed pancakes, sauce and cucumbers/onions. First time at Mama Chang's and we were seriously impressed! The place is huge, clean, and really pretty inside -- perfect for both casual meals and group dinners. Service was super fast and friendly, which we really appreciated. We LOVED the hand-pulled beef noodles -- flavorful broth, tender beef, and the noodles had that perfect chewy texture. Easily the highlight of the meal. Can't wait to come back and try the dim sum next time -- everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. Definitely recommend! read more

Food was good we had the dry fried cauliflower, pork soup dumplings, stir fried squid, and whole steamed branzino. The fish was great but they definitely forgot our order, we ate and finished all of our other food before the fish arrived and the table next to us who came at a later time got their steamed fish at the same time. Our waitress kept saying it would take 20-30 min and that no one forgot our order it just takes a long time to prepare but it definitely was longer, i'd say we waited close to 40 or so. read more

Upscale Chinese spot with a nice atmosphere. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food came out quickly. The duck is on the pricier side, but it was juicy and really delicious, so it felt worth trying. Overall, a solid spot for a nicer Chinese meal. read more

Stopped by with boyfriend to try their ayce weekend lunch menu. $28 per person. We got: - pork soup dumplings: 9/10 super tasty! Could eat so many of these. Wish they had the crab version on the ayce menu too. - pork and shrimp shumai: 9/10 very filling and huge. These filled us up quick. - dry fried cauliflower: 10/10 my fave!! Love the mala flavor. - dry fried chili fish: 8/10 tasty but not enough mala flavor. - green beans with pickled cabbage: 8/10, liked the salty pickled cabbage bits. The beans are fried so they're yummy but hard to eat a ton of. salt and pepper shrimp: 6/10 not super special, they gave a ton that we struggled to finish. wuhan sesame noodles: 8/10 pretty good, I like the pickled radish in it. The portion size was nice and small too. grandmas fish meatballs: 9/10 very comforting! Never had anything like this. The fish meatballs were almost like mochi in texture. Could hardly tell that they were fish balls. rice cakes with brown sugar: 6/10 too oily and expected more mochi chewiness. It was just like fried soft rice falling apart. I like the idea, but wish it had more texture and less oil. Service for a Thursday lunch was so busy, I think there was only one waitress for the entire restaurant. It was difficult to flag her down to place more orders. She pushed us to just place a bunch of orders at once but we didn't know how much we could eat so we wanted to take it round by round. I do realize this place does not need another positive review, but the food was so outstanding that I cannot resist! Everything was simply spectacular. The hot pot was not only delicious but beautiful! And our service was warm and professional. Glad I made a reservation for a Saturday afternoon as the place was packed! The tang from the pickled cabbage adds brightness that pairs beautifully with the crisp texture of the beans. The stir-fried beef with green onion and salt and pepper shrimp were both solid and well-executed. Portions are on the smaller side, but that just means you can sample more dishes. Came here for Mother's Day! The service was okay. The waitress got our order and the next time we saw her was to get the bill. The food is pricey for the portion you get and overall it was okay. The Beef chow fun was pretty mediocre. Very little portion. The Mala hotpot was spicy and the little tealight candle underneath added a nice oomph factor. The fried rice was tasty but super oily. The crispy beef was super sweet. The shrimp was a real miss. It's almost like it came from the freezer from the grocery store. Would not recommend this dish. The best dish IMO was the puffy scallion pancake. It's flaky and tasty but once it deflates there's not much of it. What you pay for is the nice ambiance but food is really just okay. read more

Are there stairs to go into the restaurant?
No stairs, just curb from parking to entry.
Do they still offer the lunch specials?
No. I recently asked for the lunch menu and they told me they had discontinued it. The regular and dim sum menus are available all day long.
How many servings in family style plates?
At least enough for a hungry family of four. But be ready for real Chinese, and not the American bs version.
Do they have any outdoor seating options?
No. There is a picnic table in the back if you get takeout.
Does anyone know if any of the vegetarian dishes are also vegan? (do not have any animal products, including egg, milk, butter or other dairy, fish sauce, chicken broth, honey, etc.)? i need the mapo tofu! (Mapo tofu dish is marked vegetarian)
Mapo Tofu usually has ground pork in the sauce. Many of the veggie dishes are also cooked with dried shrimps for flavor. I would just ask them to exclude if possible.
If I show up at 11am on a Sunday, will there be a line of people waiting?? (do people come earlier than 11 to get in line??)
Unless it's a holiday, no. It does fill up quickly though so I do recommend getting there by 11:30 at latest.
