Lu Wei is conveniently next to 99 Ranch and I've been wanting to try their XLB because people say it's good. Sadly, they were out of XLB this past Saturday afternoon (also it's 9.00 for 4 XLBs???) so we tried a few other dishes instead. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Like what everyone else said, this is more of a carry-out style restaurant, but if you are eating in, they do give you "real" bowls, plates and utensils to eat with.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It's nice that you can order using their kiosk and there's pictures attached to every menu item. STIR-FRIED BOK CHOY W/ TOFU SKIN ROLL - 15 The bok choy has a lot of "wok hay" that made it taste a lot better than homemade bok choy. It's pretty simple with a bit of oil and stir-fried in garlic. However, the tofu skin rolls were quite inedible because of how salty they were. My parents and I took a bite out of one and we gave up after that. SICHUAN BOILED FISH - 19 This came in a large bowl filled with a lot of chili oil. There's plenty of flounder in here with other spices and toppings like beansprouts. It's spicy, but not "holy-crap-my-nose-is-runny" kind of spicy. I didn't think it had a strong mala flavor. It was just really salty, and this is when my dad went to go buy another bowl of rice because it was too much. Overall, bland in terms of spice but so, so salty. FRIED MEAT SKEWER (3PCS) BEEF - 10 This was pretty good because the beef was juicy and fatty and had a good amount of spice and seasoning. My mom thought it kind of tasted like pork, though. It's just pretty expensive to buy three lil skinny skewers for 10.00. If you want additional white rice, it's +1 for each bowl. We definitely needed at least a few bowls because the food here was pretty salty. My dad is very much a "no food waste" kind of man, but the tofu skin rolls and fish today were a rare exception. read more

Hmmm, I'm torn about writing this but I feel like more people need to know. First of all, this is more of a carry out vibe. There's a kiosk to order from but also someone who can help answer any questions you have. There are also quick refrigerated items you can ask for to go as well. The food quality is certainly great. The soup dumplings were exceptional BUT they give you a regular plastic soup spoon even though we dined in. I don't know how well it'd travel I don't know if I'd order for take out, but I would bring my own spoon because it seemed like a waste to have the dumpling slide off because it was too big for the spoon. The sichuan fish is usually my marker for good Sichuan food and I can't say this was my favorite. It needed just a little more razzle dazzle, spice, and/or salt? Also, the fact that it doesn't come with rice and you have to order the $1 side rice extra was a bit... uncouth. The fried rice was ok. Not bad but not something that I would consider my favorite. Since we dined in, we did ask for cups for water. They stated they don't provide cups for water or free water and we'd have to purchase. Again, seemed a bit excessive that we were dining in and they still served us in regular plates and bowls but plastic spoons, wooden chopsticks, and didn't have any cups for water. Parking is ample. The restaurant space is clean. Big enough for small families to enjoy but didn't see any high chairs. We didn't ask but it's a smaller space so maybe they have them tucked away somewhere. Finally, a great authentic Chinese spot in Fairfax! Lu Wei by Peter Zhang is located just steps away from 99 Ranch and offers a variety of hot and cold dishes including marinated duck, chicken, beef, and more. I was really impressed with their spicy marinated duck wing, duck feet and duck neck combo ($13) and marinated soy tofu ($7) - both were so flavorful and not overly spicy. They do have spices on the side if you want it extra spicy though. Don't skip the duck because it's definitely the highlight! Delicious Chinese food! Not beef and broccoli chinese but authentic Chinese. It's kind of a takeout place vibe but you can dine in. At first i ordered the hot pot and thought $40 was a bit expensive but for the amount of food you get, totally worth it! Personally, I wish they put more vegetables. There was a ton of meat but I paid the extra $5 vegetable tray but all it had was cabbage and bak Choy. I know inflation is high so I didn't expect enoki mushrooms or anything crazy but maybe less meat and a bit more vegetables? Of course, this is personal preference... We also ordered the pork knuckle. Wish I took a photo cause I would definitely just get that to eat with beer at home. Salt and pepper Pork knuckle A+, flavor is strong which I like (spicy, salty, etc.). DELICIOUS Like I said, kind of a take out place so not much service but the lady who took the order was nice and friendly. it's just not a waiter service kind of restaurant. Saw this place expand their menu beyond marinated options and decided to finally try it. A ton of options all available to go or dine in. No frills - pay for water, rice, and grab your own utensils. We tried a stir fried dish, noodle soup, soup dumplings, and marinated tofu. All were delicious and probably the best soup dumplings right now in the nova area. 4 for $9 though so not cheap. The noodle soups don't look like what are displayed on the screen. They come with a layer of red sauce that's not spicy. Wish I was told so I could have requested without it. Noodles were a bit soggy. Next time, will try requesting a clear soup and more al dente noodles. Definitely try for some authentic Chinese dishes! read more

Don't try it - just totally skip is so I can keep this hidden gem all to myself. But seriously - it's by far one of my favorite places to eat Szechuan and on my rotation of restaurants to eat monthly if not every 2 weeks. I don't live anywhere near it and go out of my way to eat here. We crave the food here weekly if we could. Don't take my word for it though. Go try for yourself - everyone has different palates. I ordered the cumin lamb and Kung Pao tofu for my guest. My guest enjoyed the spicy level (high) for the dish. I also enjoyed my cumin lamb. It was a carryout order and was ready at the stated time. The staff warmly welcomed me and confirmed my order before handing it to me. It seemed like Lu Wei would have more carryout orders than dine-in. There was some seating, but no other customers were in at the time. I would reorder or try some other items if I'm in the area. I got the Marinated Assorted Hot Stone Pot -includes pig feet, tofu, intestines, pork ribs, chicken, Napa, seaweed, -- BEAWARE I asked for mild spicy and I couldn't even feel my mouth after 3-4 items chewed. This place is just NOT your typical "ma-la" because I'm pretty good with hot pots spicy and I even told them I want mild spicy and it came like this!!! That's not the worse part; then worse part is the MSG and the amount of MSG they put inside their food to marinate. It's horrendous ~ I'm absolutely blown away how could a restaurant that seemingly care about its food dump an overwhelming amount of MSG and numbing spice to the most popular dish in the restaurant. Tofu and intestines is cut so small - very difficult to eat Chicken is hard !! I think this place just opened so dropping my thoughts/review on it. Food: 卤味 is yummy. I had marinated pork ears and it was yummy! I could tell the marinate itself had a lot of herbs and spices, so I really appreciated the flavor as a Chinese native Dine-in: the dine in experience was not so great as all the dine-in food from the kitchen is very very slow. I think my husband and I waited 15 mins for our noodles to come out. And they didn't actively tell us they were out of marinated tofu, until we keep asking them if our food is ready or not. Issues: they have some issues using the machine to refund our tofu. They took a long time.... Also thinking that they are not really good at labeling and telling people what is sold out on the app, hence people keeps ordering the sold out item online and stuck at the refund process. Workers seem new so I am sure they are also figuring out how to use the machine also. Overall: recommend you come pick up any of their marinated goods, which already packed in a container by pound. I think those are worth your time and money to get! Not recommend for dine in (for now). Edit FYI: I believe this is not the same owner as Peter Chang (or owner of Mama Chang). Solid food that once again differs from Peter's other restaurants. It's more of a takeout place, but I chose to dine in, per the friendly cashier. This may be my 2nd favorite of Peter's ventures. If you want to try Chinese food that stands out from your standard Hunan and kung pao dishes, go with an open mind. Virginia's Chinese restaurant cult favorite Peter Chang just dropped a lu wei spot in Fairfax. No fanfare, no announcement, just one day, the doors opened. This concept is radically different from his usual and beloved Sichuan restaurants. First, it's self serve, limited service is reminiscent of a take out place. Second, the focus is on lu wei... braised food. Lu wei is very popular in China but lesser known here. Meat is slow braised in a soy sauce, star anise, spices blend broth, then served usually cold or used as an ingredient in noodle soup or other dishes. For those unfamiliar with lu wei, this will be a fun adventure. Lu Wei by Peter Zhang seems to target a more Chinese palatte so don't expect any of your favorite Chinese American dishes. It's also more of a Chipotle service style of restaurant so plastic utensils and bottled water for purchase. Peter Chang uses the more traditional spelling of his last name for this venture. I can only guess it's a nod to the more traditional lu wei flavors from his hometown of Hubei. The spices used at Lu Wei is not his usual Sichuan ma la peppercorns. He uses a different spice blend that is more of a flash burn (think Thai chili) so be sure to have plenty of sour plum juice available to ease the burn. Overall, a unique style to this area. Definitely happy to have something more traditional. read more

One of the worst restaurants I have been to. We have been there several times before and found the place to be very mediocre at the best. So we gave it another chance today and it was equally disappointing or worse than prior experiences. Ordered kung pow chicken, it had no kung paw taste at all. The chicken was over cooked, color was so dark looks like the dish was burnt, had lots of junky fillers, and for the high price you pay they don't offer rice unless you pay additional fees. [[HIGHLIGHT]]While the place is pleasant and comfortable, it is more "bare-bones atmosphere" - and that may be its charm[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Here, you go for the food. The staff is pleasant and helpful, the kitchen accommodating. If spicy is your thing, this is the place, but don't be put off by that, there are plenty of other offerings. The dishes are plentiful. For me, with one main dish and some rice, I end with enough for two lunches at home (yes, "leftovers"). Parking is close and plentiful, and if you still have energy and time, there are interesting stores to visit in the strip. After eating there a couple of times, plus some take out, I know that I will return again and agaii. Final word - extraordinary. read more

Another Peter Chang creation, with the usual mala and traditional chinese dishes. No beef and broccoli here. The restaurant has both dine in and take out. We ordered the stir fried beef noodles and soup dumplings. Both were tasty; the noodles had the necessary wok hei and the dumpling skin were thin and delicate. However, the service is no frills. They don't offer water; you can only purchase a bottle. And they don't offer soup spoons, which makes it difficult to fully enjoy the soup dumplings. However, we will be back to try more dishes. stopped by at 8pm ish on Sunday and it was closed, even though it says 9pm at the store. Peeking from the outside, the store seemed to be geared towards pick up/delivery orders. The tables and chairs are very basic - I can't imagine anyone wanted to dine in there. While I thought Peter Chang's short lived Noodles & Dumplings self serve location in Glen Allen was the least dine-in friendly across all PC locations in DMV, Lu Wei was much worse than that. The store is located at the same plaza as the ghosted 99 ranch market. All of the stores in the food court have already left. Wish Lu Wei can survive till my second attempt. Please buy some real tables and chairs so that I can dine in there and write a 5 star review on my main account. Thanks! read more

I was so happy I went back with several friends to LuWei. Their new expanded menu is fabulous. The soup dumplings are among the best in the DMV. We also had the shrimp & chive dumplings and the fish dumplings - both of which were excellent. We shared a bowl of ramen noodles with spareribs, the marinated tofu, and the beef shank. All were great. The star of the meal was the simplest stir fried bok choy that was perfectly cooked with garlic. It was piping hot and delicious. All the food was piping hot. Very simple no-frills restaurant but the food was spot-on. Totally authentic Chinese food which I wish Peter would serve in his other restaurants. Sadly his other restaurants - especially the Arlington branch that carries his name - have slipped quite a bit. read more
