Let's be honest here - the place is a huge feeding trough of southern fried goodness. For those of you who have yet to venture to these parts here's how it works - 1. Stand in line and pay 2. Move to the food containment area and select a plate. 3. Make your way around the steam tables and load your plate with all of the cholesterol heavy food you can fit on it. 4. Search for a seat at one of the community tables. 5. A waitress will eventually come around and take your drink order - that is, "sweet" or "unsweet". (Tip: go for the "sweet") 6. Eat yourself miserable. OK, more about the food - the fried chicken totally rocks. Best thing on the steam table...The other meats are more or less just OK. Veggies - nothing really veggie about them as they all contain copious amounts of dead pig. But damn, they sure are tasty! Really, I could make a meal on the greens and field peas along (OK, maybe add some cornbread). Desserts - peach cobbler is decent. Oh, the place can get VERY crowded at lunch. But you will meet some very interesting folks at the community tables (a plus in my book but that's just me.) Need I say more? read more

We started going to Hamil's back before they expanded, when it was a 2-ish room restaurant (L-shaped) with limited seats and you would have to stalk someone's table and wait on them to leave in order to have a seat. The food was some of the best southern food I have ever had. All of the classes - meatloaf, fried chicken, a huge selection of greens, beans, and authentic desserts. They moved into a massive two-story building on the same property and there were times when we *still* had to stand around and wait for seats to clear up! Some of my favorite dishes include the fried chicken gizzards, the BBQ ribs, and their bread pudding. You pretty much have to fight over the huge platter of ribs and it's emptied within minutes of being brought one. One nice thing is that the food was always fresh, and new platters were constantly being brought out. All of the servers had classic southern charm and hospitality. If you are lucky enough to be in the area, or don't mind a long drive, add Mama Hamil's to your list of places to visit! You won't be disappointed. This was once one of Madison's best kept secrets. It was tucked away in an old, converted home, and the hours were sparse. But it was like going to a family reunion potluck in the Deep South. They would have limitless amounts of every Southern dish imaginable, chocked-full of saturated fats and refined sugars that would usher you towards heaven, one way or another. The tables were cramped and communal. You really couldn't get out without meeting someone. Sadly, the secret has been discovered, and they have moved to a large barn-like location just across the way, complete with a register line that feels unfortunately similar to those cattle-style Golden Corral setups. Fortunately though, the food hasn't fallen too far, even if it does seem to have lost the personal touch. They still have long, connected tables, but people keep to themselves now. I was in town for one night and saw this place had great reviews and offered delivery after a long tiring 10 hour drive I was sold. Most of the food was delicious! The fried chicken, bbq chicken, creamed corn, and butter beans all amazing! The reason for the 3 stars 1. My bbq chicken was really cold, the catfish were nuggets and not actually pieces like the website shows, and the meals come with dessert which I didn't receive. My driver said I would be refunded for the dessert so I'm waiting to hear back for some type of compensation. If I'm ever in the area again I'd probably give them another shot but as of now it wasn't the greatest experience. read more

A large group of us headed here for lunch because we were told it was some of the best fried chicken we'd have and she wasn't lying! The buffet was very extensive and I constantly saw servers tending to it and adding more food. My favorite items from the buffet were the fried chicken, ribs, the salad w/blueberries and cranberries and the mashed potatoes. And save room for dessert! I tried the peach cobbler, bread pudding and the bananas foster and they were all to die for! Ugh, now if only I could take Mama Hamil's back to Baltimore with me.... read more

We visited November 10th 2018 on my birthday one thing I really enjoy was the broccoli salad.. I have made that salad before but I love how they chopped up everything so small.. their hush puppies were delicious well seasoned!! Their mac and cheese had way too much black pepper.. I absolutely didn't enjoy, fried chicken needed more seasoning.. salads were the best in my personal opinion. Sliced cakes were too dry didn't taste like anything & dinner rolls looked delicious but didn't taste like anything either.. almost 2 hour drive was disappointing. Nothing I will return back for. But these are my own personal opinions.. I have heard many say the food was wonderful... but I can say the workers were kind and the place is neat and orderly. read more

Superb. In every aspect, this place has it all. Great service and awesome delicious food. I have only tried this place once when I was visiting but "It was awesome baby". It is a buffet style joint that you can have as little or as much as you want. They have plenty of choices of entrees, vegetables, and desserts to choose from. What a wonderful southern buffet! While visiting Jackson for work a co-worker brought me here for some "Mississippi" food for lunch.We had tried the day before to come here, but the line was out the door and we just didn't have the time needed to savor everything so we ran to another restaurant, but we were determined to get back. The next day we attempted again. This time we walked right in the door with only a couple people in front of us. I was so excited! Then I saw the price. I was amazed ,less than $10!!! Then we jumped in the line. Tons of "veggie" options like ambrosia (fruit salad covered in a sweet, creamy dressing), broccoli salad, cucumber and tomato salad, beans, peas, green beans. Then we hit up the carbs like rice, mashed potatoes, potato salad, rolls (corn bread, white and hoe cakes). Then was the protein, ribs, chicken (fried and oven cooked), meat loaf and fried livers. Then we passed the dessert items we were going to have to come back for such as ice cream, cinnamon rolls, cakes, peach cobbler and bread pudding (hidden by the rolls). Of course there are more items I just can't remember. Then we began our search for a table. There were none downstsairs but we had some luck when we went upstairs. I loved the fruit salad so sweet and creamy. I also loved the potato salad, it had a spice I wasn't used to in potato salad, my co-worker said it was celery seed. It made it a whole new experience! The creamed corn was fine, but not my favorite. The oven cooked chicken was so juicy! The ribs were amazing!!! The rub on the outside was very peppery and juicy. You must get some ribs!!! All you can eat ribs for less than $10. That's crazy! I also had their sweet tea to wash everything down with, not crazily sweet, I loved it. Then I ventured back to the line for more fruit salad and dessert (the fruit salad is basically dessert in my book). I also grabbed some of the hidden peach cobbler and bread pudding. Oh how I loved the peach cobbler. So delicious with the crunchy topping. The bread pudding was good, but I loved the peach cobbler more. Next time just grabbing the peach cobbler for dessert. Then we wobbled back to our cars and almost feel asleep at work. Oh how I wish we had this in Houston! read more

Mama Hamil's can rock some southern food. The last couple of times we have been though, we have not seen her son in the kitchen. Unfortunately, we felt like some of the food reflected this. Overall, however, ALL of their food is delicious. Salads: variety offered, we love their fruit salad. Tomatoes and cucumbers can't be beat as well. Veggies: creamed corn, kernel corn, cabbage, green beans, yams, peas, turnip greens, mashed potatoes, more (can't remember them all): ALL good Meats/Fish: BBQ ribs, fried chicken, organ meats, catfish (with their hush puppies and fries) can't be beat Others: pizza, macaroni & cheese, rolls, cornbread Desserts: soft-serve ice cream, pies, cakes Drinks: gotta have that sweet tea, but they have variety The only thing is their prices seem to climb over months at a time!! Amazing. Consistent good southern buffet. Reasonably priced. The only complaint is that I can't control myself and I always leave miserably full. Great gizzards! The BBQ sauce is perfect in my opinion. It's tomato based and a little on the thin side. Fritters are out of this world. The vegetables all taste fresh and definitely cooked with that southern "love." I'm pretty sure that's actually the bacon fat, sugar, and butter but damn they're good. The meats are always fresh and well cooked. Ribs are very good, especially so for a Buffett. This place stays so busy fresh food is always being put out. Refills are always plentiful and usually pretty quick. Some servers are better than others obviously but they all do a good job. There is a community type atmosphere to the dining room which really correlates with the southern home cooking food. read more

I've heard great reviews about Mama Hamil's. I was invited there with family for an evening. For the price, the only thing redeeming is the quantity of all-you-can-eat. The quality was typical cheapo cafeteria style and certainly not worth the price. There was absolutely no dish that was outstanding or worth the trip. I was told the desserts were to die for. The bread pudding was dry and bland. The banana pudding could have been purchased at a hospital cafeteria and been as good. I won't tell you not to go there. It could have been an off-night. The items I had could have been sitting there too long and not been at their best (which is not good for buffet customers). But in my opinion, there are plenty of "southern" establishments around that offer quality food without the trough atmosphere and flavor. read more
