I was taking a loved one to the hospital and was starrrrving. I didn't want to eat at the hospital cafeteria, so I got in my car and ventured to see what was around the area. Immediately, I looked over and saw Mama Le. When I entered, I was met with a warm smile and a staff member, Amara, who was able to help me pick the best thing on the menu (based on what I can eat). She was incredibly helpful. I also wanted a drink because the pictures on the outside of the building alll looked so delicious. I ended up ordering the lemongrass beef with rice and also the slushie with passion fruit. My goodness. My my my my my. Complete tens across the board. The beautifully seasoned and tender beef, the delicious onions and peppers and the incredible aromatic waft that hits your nose upon every bite. It was a truly remarkable dish. This place is a must try. When the waitress brought the food to the table, the aroma was incredible! Each of the rice dishes the family ordered, smelled so good. Honestly, I never thought to try fried chicken from a Vietnamese place, especially with fish sauce on it. The waitress said it is pretty popular, so I gave it a try. The fried chicken didn't have your typical floured batter, instead it was a marinated chicken leg and thigh, that was fried to be extra crispy, with a layer of fish sauce glaze that was probably the aroma I smelt. It was something I have never tasted before, and it was so delicious. It was a little salty, but that is what the rice, cucumbers and tomatoes are for, to help cut the saltiness. My younger kids order the chicken pho and salmon. The chicken pho was good. I snuck a little sip of the soup and it was a nice clean chicken pho soup. As for the salmon, I took a small bite and that was delicious. Okay, my kid ordered it well done (a crime), but it came out crispy on all sides. I don't know what was the seasoning on it, but it had a lot of flavor. There were a decent amount of vegetarian choices. My wife ordered the shaken tofu. She liked it, but it would be better if there were other veggies instead of peppers and onions. The second time we went, she got the tofu with vegetables, which wasn't as good as the shaken tofu. The ginger garlic sauce was good, but it was mainly tofu and cabbage. It is a small place, next to Memorial Herman Sugar Land. Stopped in on a road trip for a light snack but that is impossible because everything on the menu sounded amazing. We ordered a beef pho which was light but savory and the perfect level of salty. The chicken wings were covered in fish sauce which I haven't seen before. They were perfectly cooked, soft and crisp. I added some sriracha for some heat. Calamari were giant and chewy without being rubbery. However, They were not spicy as advertised. I had the beef banh mi which was divine. The pate and mayo worked to create a fatty, creamy, savory experience reminiscent of an elevated cheeseburger or cheese steak. The bun was fluffy and the crust chewy. The bubble waffle is definitely worth a try. Service was fantastic. Maylin was super friendly and attentive. Dining room was clean and modern. Bathroom was clean. They had a little seat in there. This is the least desirable of all the Vietnamese food I have tried. I love Banh Mi sandwiches and have liked them everywhere BUT this place. It grossed me out actually. The pate is absolutely disgusting. I tried to wipe it off, and continued eating but I smelled a fishy smell and realized it was the pate! It tastes like what I imagine cat food tasting like. My fingers smelled like fish. I could not continue eating it. And it wasn't just the pate; the sandwich wasn't the greatest either, even without the pate. The egg rolls were decent, not the best I've had. It was filled too much with ground pork, and not enough vegetables. The sauce it came with was flavored water, basically. No substance to it, very watery, with very little flavor. Mango smoothie was good, not my favorite but would get it again. Would not eat here again, but might stop for a smoothie. Service was surprisingly nice. *UPDATE (later that evening) I had left my closed bag of food on the table while I played on my phone. I started to smell rotten garbage. Had lunch here with my family. I ordered the spicy seafood noodle. I had to wait 18 minutes to get my food due to the lunch hour rush but at least the water came quickly. The vegetables for the noodles were very fresh and healthy. Never saw such large bean sprouts and big cilantro leaves. The noodle broth had a scent and taste pretty much like the bun bo Hue. It was flavorful and good. The noodles were snappy. Only negative was that there could be a little more noodles. This is from a guy who's been trying to cut back on carbs. I had a lot of veggies and broth left when I ran out of noodles and the meal felt incomplete, so I threw in some stir fried egg noodles from my daughter's plate. Yoooo! I think I found a new regular lunch hangout. Mama Le made me a believer. I came here for lunch with a friend since it's close to where we both work. I've been sleeping on Mama Le! I wanted to order an old favorite for me like Bún bò Huế, Bò né or Bò kho, maybe even bánh mì. Instead I decided to try something different. Now there was a slight mixup on my plate as I ordered Đậu Hủ Xào Sả Ớt or Tofu With Chili & Lemon Grass and I ended up getting Bò Xào Sả Ớt or Spicy Lemongrass Onion Beef. Ironically, I wasn't even practicing my Tiếng Việt this time. I'll tell you right now, I'm not mad at them at all. Maybe they knew what I needed better than I did because the Bò Xào Sả Ớt was on point! It had just the right amount of spice and heat. I know when my nose starts running but I haven't started crying yet, I'm in my zone. The beef was tender. The veggies were fresh. I don't even eat a ton of rice but I ate all that rice. I could see my reflection in my plate when I was done. In all my excitement, I forgot to mention the appetizers. Fried calamari that looked like onion rings and tasted great. Crispy tofu that was completely crispy on the outside but so soft on the inside. I wonder if they make a spicy version? My friend ordered the Salmon Chiên or Fried Salmon. It looked delicious and they said it was. I'm definitely ordering that at some point. I didn't tell the waitress about the mixup until I went to pay. She was apologetic but I assured her it was more than okay. I enjoyed what I got and I eat both meat and vegetable based dishes, so no harm. The peanut sauce was yummy too, but it's the flavors in the spring rolls that will have me order them again! I ordered a house vermicelli bowl that comes with an egg roll and grilled pork. The vegetables are so fresh and the flavors in the bowl just worked so well together, and I was definitely happy with my choice. (Plus I have leftovers, so yay second meal haha). Hubby ordered the shaken beef, and let me tell you... the flavors in that dish have me craving more already! He got his rare (definitely recommend rare or medium), and it was so delish, the salt and pepper and lime dipping sauce wasn't needed. But it makes it EVEN BETTER- if you can believe that's possible!
