We were spending the night nearby and needed a bite to hold us over. We randomly stumbled into this place. It had kind of a dive energy. It turned out that the people were really nice, the food was really good, and the prices were really reasonable. We live a thousand miles away. A fellow Yelper recommended this location to me and I walk by quite frequently and have been meaning to visit. They have a lunch happy hour for 2 empanadas and a drink for $5. They also have happy hour as well in the evening. I got a take out order and got: 1. Beef empanada 2. Beef torta 3. Pork torta Everything was delicious!! I enjoyed every bite and I'm especially excited about the torta. They taste very homey and not overly greasy. The inside is very nicely decorated just like the front of the store. My quest to find great empanadas in my neighborhood continues strong this year. You can imagine my surprise as I was casually walking down the street and saw a $5 empanadas and coffee grab-n-go special at Mama Lupita's ... I simply has to drop everything I was doing to find out what I was missing out on. My first impression of this place is that it is incredibly clean, the inside decor is so cute and I love the bar area. I can't wait to return here to have casual margs with friends one day. The bartender was super nice, and they made my empanadas fresh to order. You get the choice between chicken, cheese and beef. I went with the chicken and beef. I COULD NOT wait to bite into these pockets of delight as soon as I walked out with my little brown bag. The chicken empanada was so delicious, so juicy and well seasoned. The shell was fried perfectly, not super oily and the oil was clean as there was no residual smell on the flaky crust. The hot sauce that accompanied the empanadas was appropriately spicy, great consistency and taste. The beef empanada was even better, so good that I even forgot to take a photo, but the meat was succulent and juicy and not dry and very well-seasoned, and it even had a few little peas mixed in. I really think the empanadas here are some of the best in the neighborhood, and I cannot wait to come and try other things off their menu. read more

Cozy and relaxing. I used to work in this area. I got the enchiladas with rice and beans. Their rice and beans are so soul enhancing. Recently visited NYC for the marathon. We were so fortunate to find this gem. The staff couldn't have been more kind and generous. Just had the best time and we made sure we could go there a couple of times during our short stay. Food was excellent!! Wish we could have tried everything! They are rated this high overall from everyone and it's quite obvious why- friendly service, clean atmosphere, and hot fresh food! I was walking from a hair salon to my car when I was walking past this neighborhood restaurant and thought - why not?! I walked in and saw they had a plastic barrier dividing the waiting area from the dining which I appreciated. A friendly lady had me seated within a minute, I noticed immediately how clean it was. The table had hand sanitizer for you as well. I ordered a smoothie as well as enchiladas. My waitress was kind and suggesting what I would enjoy more because I was stuck between three things and it was much appreciated. I was given complementary nachos and salsa which at first glance, I wasn't sure because the tortilla chips looked thick... But they were good and you could tell it was cooked in clean oil. I ate all of them and all of the salsa actually, it was super good. I ordered green enchiladas because I wanted to have something lighter. I appreciated that it was not laden with cheese, which a lot of places do. a true enchilada is really about the sauce the tasty shredded meat, which I got chicken, and the tortillas it's wrapped in. I could tell the tortilla was fresh and homemade. The green sauce was delicious, I couldn't get enough of it. It also came with rice and beans. Instead of water, I ended up getting a strawberry banana smoothie and they blended it fresh, it was cold, frothy and delicious. I'm so glad because it was not only a drink but also a dessert for me. A side note: I was pleased that they had proper air conditioning because a lot of restaurants in Manhattan, no matter how expensive... Don't know what air conditioning is and those places are 3-4x the price. All in all, whenever I am in the neighborhood I will be sure to be back. The menu is somewhat standard, but there are some *extraordinarily* good items buried in there. - The pambazo is to die for (it's a potato/chorizo sandwich dipped in red guajillo sauce) - The pozole (if they have any) is exactly what the doctor ordered - rich, pleasing, and sinus-clearing and oh, so much more. The place is bright and slightly sterile, but that's ok - go, hang out, chat with the folks, and get to know them - it's worth it. I have tried Pambazos in San Diego for the first time at a hole in the wall a few years ago and ever since then, everytime I see a place that sell Pambazos, I order it. I had a pick up order from this place. They said 15 minutes and once I arrived the food was ready. The food was packaged well and was still hot when I ate it. The flavor was milder that I like and it did not have much filling. I still have not found good Pambazos in NYC. PS, Idk if their other items are tasty. Review solely based on Pambazos. To me, if a restaurant cannot make an item well, they should just avoid making it: short menu with amazing food better than a hundred item menu with nothing that tastes amazing. read more

Everything else in NYC May have shut down, but Mama Lupita's hasn't! Currently open for takeout/delivery. So when I was back in the area to bring stuff up and begin the coming back process, of course I had to get lunch at my favorite spot. Got the "usual" shrimp cocktail (a delicious combo of a spicy, tomato-y sauce with shrimp, onions, cilantro, and avocado) and one of their new tamales. Now the hard part is going to be picking between tamales and empanadas for a quick bite! Got a red tamale and it was the perfect level of spice with a good amount of pork throughout. (All tamales are pork.) They're also working on opening their back patio for seating during stage 2, so that will be really nice to relax back on their patio this summer! read more

The beans and rice here taste like what you can get in the Southwest. There are so many different incarnations of these dishes. To me, this tastes of home. I like the tacos dorados with chicken or a nice bean tostada. Amazing salsas, too. The people here are warm and friendly, and delivery is fast. If it won't be quick, they warn me before ordering. I would love to come for breakfast but my schedule is against it. While many things on the menu are very good, the beans are so perfect that I actually crave them. And they really know how to fry a tortilla for that perfect crunch. read more
