I was prepared to love this place more than I actually did, sadly. The menu is a wonderful mix of traditional and interesting choices, the place is cute as can be, the service is spot on, and the portions are generous. My wife had the Three Taco plate (comes with rice and beans) which she enjoyed, but said that the crunchy tacos were a bit tough. I had Pollo en Molé because I am a big fan of that dish. The chicken quarter was cooked perfectly in the molé, but the mole itself was a little lackluster. The flour tortillas they served with it were fresh and obviously made on site! I want to believe that the same can be said for the tortilla chips that came with our orders because they were excellent, too. Both the rice and the beans were pretty bland but the salsas they included perked them up, but they shouldn't have needed to. Still, a great local place that we will probably visit again. read more

Both my brother in law (a foodie) and I had a combination taco, enchilada, and chilli relleno. Service was prompt. Keep in mind, the food is made fresh to order, so it took around 20-25 minutes. Meanwhile, snack on the homemade chips and green salsa (has a bit of a,pleasant bite) and a bowl of their soup of the day. Today it was split pea. Delicious as was the rest of the food when it arrived. My BIL ate everything, I could only eat half. Everything was so good and flavorful. Even the iced tea was from scratch. Great service. Great food. This place is a hidden gem of home cooked Mexican food. It feels like mom's cooking sometimes. We love coming here on weekend mornings where locals come and enjoy. The menudo is most excellent. They are pretty busy in the morning on weekends but it's well worth it. read more

First time eating here. I got a meat quesadilla. It doesn't even have all the fixings inside like most places do like lettuce, cilantro, onion,etc. It only comes with meat and cheese and if u want additional toppings they're extra in this case I wanted sour cream. I went to go pay for it and it came out to $14. 89. I was gonna pay with card but noticed a 3.75% card fee. So I had her cancel the card so I could pay with cash instead. The price with cash was $14.35. Im not sure if she didn't charge the card fee or they still charge a hidden fee even with cash. Personally I feel a quesadilla with minimal toppings should never come out to basically $15 for meat, cheese, and none homemade tortilla. The food wasn't worth bragging about. So I'd say we're batting .500 with Mama Lupitas, which is great for baseball, not so much for dining out. We arrived at 855 AM, a few tables seated, and sat down quickly. The server and hostess took our order, and then the wait began. Brought us soup before our drinks. Then drinks. More people came in , sat down, ordered, and got their food before we did. A man came in, ordered to go, and left before we were served. At 940 we asked about our food and were told the cook just started it. We paid our bill, got it to go. Adding insult to injury, the hostess did not seem concerned about the situation, and rather than apologize for the delay, she wished us a nice day. Very disappointing, the food the first time was good, and the restaurant is within walking distance, so we'd love to have a breakfast option we can walk to ,but I guess First Awakenings will be the default. read more

She gave me a basket of both flour & corn chips, salsa was a bit spicy but very good flavor. I order the Chicken Enchilada & Chicken Fried Taco both were really good and came out temperature hot. I had the menudo. It was ok but it had hairs in it!! YES HAIRS more than ONE. I went back for a refund and it was a big deal to the workers. They stated the pata (pig feet) has hair so it's normal for menudo to have hair. I stated I'd never ate menudo with pork feet that had hair. Stumbled into this place while driving from SFO to the central coast. What a lucky find! Food was excellent. Beers were ice cold. And there is a menu that is kid friendly. I had the Chile Colorado. Perfect hole in the wall Mexican food. First, don't waste your time or stomach capacity on the the Asada Fries, it is not worth the curiosity. Yes, they still are delicious, but the traditional menu is so much better - treat yourself to that good life of better food! If Mama Lupita's were in my hometown in Alaska, this would be my go-to for Mexican food. This operation is clearly family owned and has minimal staff. There was only a cook and one staff that operated to take all orders, deliver food, bus tables and all that. However. It is worth the wait, going a little thirsty, and having to be patient. Mama Lupita's offers a spicy fresh salsa, handmade fresh chips and tortillas, and more. The expansive menu is good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and they offer mexican drinks. We ordered the Gordita, asada fries (again, with regrets now wishing we had gone the traditional route ignoring our curiosity), chicken enchilada, beef sopa, and the molcajete. Gordita - the tortilla was flakey and fried perfectly. The carnitas were juicy and it was complimented nicely with the sour cream. Guacamole - freshly made. Cilantro was absolutely delicious. It was just the right amount of flavor on too small of a plate but well worth the price. Sope - this was pretty greasy (at least to me) but the beef on it was full of flavor as well as the traditional Mexican fixings on this particular food item. I had no clue what this particular item was when I ordered it but I definitely do not regret ordering it at all. Enchilada - full of flavor and absolutely a worth while dish. Rice and beans - my boyfriend (who is originally from California) absolutely loved the fluffiness of the rice and commented on how delicious the refried beans were. Molcajate - this was an absolute feast of food. Chicken, carne asada, nopales (cactus), pork, shrimp and Mexican cheese were put together in a bowl with some of the freshest tortillas I've ever enjoyed. This dish was the reason why we regretted getting the asada fries. Because our eyes were larger than our stomachs. To wrap up, Mama Lupita's is delicious and would be difficult to beat. I highly recommend Mama Lupita's as your choice for Mexican in the Salinas, CA. read more

Great place to get a bfast burrito to go. They are decent sized and cost $5.75 each. Ordering over the phone was easy and they had our order ready upon arrival. I opted for the sausage bfast burrito that comes with eggs, potatoes, beans, and cheese. Other options besides sausage are bacon, ham, chorizo, asada, nopales, shredded chicken or beef machaca.
