Very inviting and big enough to accommodate the large groups who were there, yet, small enough to feel all warm and fuzzy inside if you happen to be on a date. They have a great calendar on their website which gives you plenty of options every day of the week ... wine lovers will love Mondays, while the music appreciation groups would surely find Thursdays most enjoyable. Under normal circumstances I would probably rate this restaurant a 4 or maybe even a 5, however, the service and food that we just had tonight had to be about the worst we have had in all my times going here. I have come to restaurant about 10 different times. My wife, son and I arrived around 5PM and were just about the only customers inside the restaurant for dinner. It took about 10 minutes of us sitting for us to even get acknowledged by a waitress. Strike 1. In looking at the menu, I realized that my go-to meal was no longer on the menu. The waitress didn't seem to know which item I was talking about so I looked the item up on the Gilroy-Mama Mia online menu and it was there. She later came back to me and told me they were no longer serving that dish. My wife suggested that they remove the item on their online menu so not to confuse customers. I am really disappointed that they got rid of my go-to dish. Although a little irritated, I decided to go with a salad. My wife also ordered a salad and my son ordered chicken fingers and pasta. It took almost 50 minutes from the time we ordered our food for us to have it on our table. Meanwhile, a party of 3 who was seated after us and ordered after us had their food on their table for about 10 minutes at that point. Strike 2. The salad that I got was horrible and lacked any sort of flavor. Additionally, my sons meal was cold, as if it were sitting under a heat lamp for a while. At this point, my wife and I both were just irritated...we finished our food (I left half of mine on the plate), paid the bill and left. I am very disappointed at the lack of service and our overall experience at this restaurant. I don't think I will be going back anytime soon. I came in for a glass of wine last night, and the amazing smells left me wanting to come back for dinner! We sat at the bar area and I had a glass of terrania (spelling may be off), for $6 it was a nice change from the usual Italian Chianti. We wanted to order an app to share but they ran out of the loaf bread for mozzarella cheese bread & garlic bread (can someone explain to me how this is possible?) we settled for he bruschetta and I kinda wished we didn't. The tomatoes were ice cold which took away from the flavor. I wouldn't be surprised if they were pre cut as it took 2 min for the app to come out. Not a fan of that. It's been awhile since I visited another Mama Mia location. This time we wanted to try the one in Gilroy. My hubby and I were completely satisfied with both the food and service by Emanuel (aka Many). We ordered clam chowder (specially made by Mama Mia) which was very tasty. Our main dishes included grilled salmon with Penne and calamari over pasta, with extra veggies (zucchini). We indeed enjoyed our excellent meal which were hot and produced an amazing aroma. I ordered spaghetti ($11.00) with meatballs ($3.00) off their "Create Your Own Pasta" lunch menu, along with a bowl of minestrone soup ($5.00). Warm fresh bread and a dipping plate of olive oil, balsamic vinaigrette and garlic shavings arrived first, followed quickly by the minestrone soup. The soup was thick, tasty and filling, with quite a variety of veggies. The spaghetti and meatballs were plain and bland - with no distinctive taste, and the noodles should have been cooked a little more. We used to love this place - SAD, but tonight was horrible. The pork tenderloin was soak with much marcella sauce that we too sweet and salty and very dry for the meat. The chicken Parmesan tasted as bad as it looked (dry and like the chicken and the pasta had been sitting on the counter for a day or 2). Needless to say, we sure didn't accept the take home boxes ! ^On top of the poor quality in food - please have someone clean the bathroom and hall that leads to it. *Signs up asking for toilet paper to be put into trash - (toilet paper with BM on it is not sanitary to be sitting around - FIX THE TOILET!) Long story short the customer service here is great. We were here yesterday and I don't know if she was a manager or owner, but she noticed something was wrong (while in her car in the parking lot) and took care of us. Not a great experience here, we were visiting out of town and the place looked great from outside, especially with the happy hour offers in the window. We were placed on a table that was quite far away from the rest of the guests which at 1st we didn't mind, but after a while we noticed lots of tiny flies flying around. At 1st we thought it was just a tiny fly or 2 but after around 10 minutes we had managed to kill around 10 flies. Also the table cloth was really stained - I was surprised it was even being used. They cleared the extra sets of cutlery and side plates, but I noticed the side plates they had left behind for us had a lot of crusty food stuck on them. In the middle of all of that. the waiter came and took our order. We inquired about what drinks they had but he didn't mention the happy hour offers even though we were in the happy hour timing. Nevertheless my friend order a margarita and I ordered a water and a couple of dishes of food. I couldn't drink the water I was served, every time I went to take a sip it had a foul smell like fish. Although our food took a while to get to us, the items were OK, I had ordered a salmon salad and the salad was made from spinach and included some peppers and 3 slices of raw mushrooms. There was absolutely no dressing. The whole dish was so dry I struggled to eat it, I may as well have opened a bag of spinach and ate that on its own. My friend ordered a second margarita and she could tell it was made by someone else completely different in taste to the 1st one she had. It was so sweet she could barely drink it. Finally I ordered a coffee and was served a stone cold coffee. At this point I had frankly had enough of continuously fighting flies away from my food and all of the things that was going wrong here. I sent the coffee back and the waiter promptly asked me what was wrong with the coffee. I was really surprised that he even asked me that - and I said to him it was cold, his response was 'it takes time to make coffee' and I explained to him that he simply had to tell me that they didn't have any fresh hot coffee. To which he didn't apologise but blankly looked at me and said 'OK'. Overall I was very disappointing to have had such a bad time at this place. I would not recommend it. read more

My wife and I supported Gilroy High School Athletics fundraiser by purchasing coupon books for $20. This included coupons for a free appetizer with the purchase of two entrees at Mama Mia's. The restaurant is clean and busy, with a muted burgundy ceiling and tasteful decor. The draft from the front doors wafting throughout the restaurant, however, means that everybody in the place has their coats on during colder months. There's a bar area with tall tables to hang out while waiting for your table to open, though the host may not tell you about it when you walk in. The host was friendly and communicative. The 25-minute wait was almost exactly as long as predicted. My wife & I walked around the shopping plaza and caught Pokemon while we waited; there are a few other restaurants and shops to keep you entertained while you wait. We ordered Calamari Fritti for an appetizer. Lightly breaded, not over cooked, served with two sauces that were pretty good. Ate it up. It's served on a bed of leaves that are themselves quite strong; don't eat unless you like strong flavors! I ordered seafood cioppino. This hearty stew had massive quantities of different seafood in it, with very few noodles. It was spicy, warm on a cool December night, and tasted pretty good! My wife ordered lamb kabobs. On advice of our server, it was cooked to a perfect Medium. Served on a bed of rice, the lamb was delicious and perfectly seasoned. However, some of the cuts were a little tough & gristly, but overall it was excellent. We are not drinkers, so I cannot rate the wine list. It appeared extensive. Mama Mia's is a restaurant with just a touch of class, a bit of a draft, slightly-upscale prices, attentive servers, and good food. Dinner for two for around $50-$75. read more

We're been coming here on and off for years. Today the crab cakes have magically transmogrified to become more breadcrumbs than crab meat. We also ordered Brochette but the server didn't put the order in. We came as two couples and my friends lamb kabob came out with cold vegetables and like warm meet. So that went back and arrived 10 minutes into the rest or our meal. The atmosphere is still nice. So here's the deal. I get annoyed with places that say they are one thing but are really another. Mama Mia's suggests it's an Italian joint - and so does Yelp, but in reality it is a Mediterranean place. You only discover that once you sit down and see the menu that lists Mediterranean/ Italian food. This place has almost as many non-Italian dishes on the menu as Italian you feel like your in a weird culinary Twilight Zone. This place is clean and looks like at one time was a booming place. It is a little "dated" but it is spacious. Especially since my pal and I and one other couple were in the restaurant. In fairness it was Monday night around 7pm. The food was marginal. I had what I can only be a premade Frozen lasagna. The meat in between the pasta was gray. Water was leeching from the dish. The taste was a little sour. Blah. I did not get sick but it was in no way fresh. My pal had the pesto pasta dish. It was also average. I don't know...there are worse places, but this wasn't great. Like everything- there are options. If you are going to be in the restaurant game then you kinda have to bring at least your "B" game because there are lots of options out there. read more
