We knew a bit about the restaurant beforehand (I stopped in over the summer to buy a gift certificate), but this was our first time dining. We've had family style dinner before and, honestly, we're very open-minded eaters. We didn't even read a menu and let the staff take care of us. It turns out that we were in very good hands. The service is very attentive and friendly. We joked with our server as we learned about the menu and asked questions. It was a perfect mix of information and 'let us show you more.' The restaurant itself is sizeable with a few areas perfect for larger groups. We were seated at a high top, which felt a bit like the cat-bird seat. We were able to see everything and people watch without being rude or obtrusive. Seeing how others reacted to the food - and getting a preview before ours arrived - was fun and informative at the same time. The tricky part of this recap is the fact that the menu is very fluid. I can tell you how amazing the antipasto was - the memory of the caper berries still makes my mouth water - but your plate may arrive with completely different items. The adventure is trying things that either you've never had before or not in this preparation. Simply put, I recommend the prix fixe family dinner. Let yourself be guided by the food and try everything in front of you. That said, we learned that the kitchen makes their favorites on Saturday nights, so you might have a chance to enjoy the silky gnocchi or the sublime orecchiette. Since Strega Nonna offers kitchen courses, I am keeping an eye on the schedule in hopes of recreating something that we enjoyed or learning something completely new to me. The music was very enjoyable and did not impede conversation. It was the perfect backdrop for our food adventure, allowing us to chat about the restaurant and food or simply enjoy the tastes while listening. The space has the layout of a brewery-style restaurant, but it comes across more chaotic than inviting, with noise carrying unevenly and the dining area feeling a bit worn rather than maintained in a way that enhances comfort. I'm really not sure that the two reviews dating from 2009 can possibly be from the same restaurant that I know and frequently dine at in Ishpeming, MI. Mama Mia's has operated in Ishpeming for over 30 years and is so well known, and has such a good reputation that the dining establishment doesn't even find it necessary to advertise. This family owned and operated restaurant has been filling its seats for decades solely based on word-of-mouth recommendations. While Mama Mia's is not as easy to find as some of the other Italian dining establishments located along the main thoroughfares of Marquette County, finding it is well worth the effort as this restaurant provides the premiere Calabrian dining experience in the region. My enthusiasm for this restaurant is also overwhelmingly shared by other locals of Upper Michigan. Mama Mia's easily won the top spot in the 2014 Best of Michigan "Best Italian Restaurant in the U.P. " survey: http://foundinwi.com/michigan/vote-for-the-best-italian-restaurant-in-the-upper-peninsula-of-michigan/ Mama Mia's provides a casually elegant and family friendly dining experience in a clean and very comfortable setting. Candlelit tables and hand-painted wall murals add to the warm ambience of the split main dining area. I am especially fond of the exquisite hand-wrapped manicotti, and Mama Mia's beef filets are amazingly tender and wonderfully marinated. The house garlic bread is delicious and admittedly quite buttery. While I actually prefer the fresh baked bread prepared in this manner, Mama Mia's is always more than happy to honor my wife's request for a more lightly buttered serving. While I know with an absolute degree of certainty that Mama Mia's sauces are all made fresh in their own kitchen, this reality should be obvious from the very first taste. If the '09 reviewers are finding sauce of this magnitude in a grocery store, I would greatly appreciate them sharing with everyone which amazing brand they're referring to. Interestingly, the "80% water" comment would seem to more accurately describe another well known Italian restaurant on the U.S. 41 corridor in nearby Marquette. I'm curious as to whether this non-local reviewer may be confusing which restaurant he's reviewing. As a postscript, it is also worth mentioning for the sake of those not acquainted with the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that Matt G. from '09 is mistaken in his comments about the area's notoriety for Italian cuisine. The U.P. Of Michigan was settled by several different "waves" of immigrants from different parts of Europe. The ethnicity of these immigrants varied depending on the which mining operation was recruiting labor, and which year different groups immigrated to specific areas. The result of this cultural mash-up was a wide distribution of ethnic communities throughout the U.P. While some ares like the Keweenaw Peninsula and Marquette are more well known for being populated by individuals of Finish or Scandinavian descent, other locations retain very vibrant Italian enclaves. Places like Iron Mountain, Ironwood and Ishpeming are very highly regarded for authentic locally owned and operated Italian restaurants. read more

I'm not going to lie to the good people (cough sarcasm cough) of yelp, but I have never been to this place. I however, have had the horrific privilege of listening to two of its employees talk about it. As far as impressions go, I'm fairly sure they are both pedophiles. I however, have had an out of body experience where I ate some super spaghetti from their fine cooks. then a hobo, wildly screaming, shot out of the bathroom and proceeded to urinate in my food. i ate it nonetheless, it was delicious. i checked my scouter for the hobo's power level. it was, unbelievably, over 9000. i went super sayan and proceeded to kick his hobo ass to the curb. afterward, there was much rejoicing. I was awarded employee of the month, and i don't even work there. i took a pizza to go after saying farewell to the employees. as I exited the restaurant, the pizza flew from my hands and struck down a man who had stolen an elderly ladies purse. all in all. the whole thing left me traumatized. For whatever reason my previous review of Mama Mia's appears to have disappeared. To briefly restate, this is my absolute favorite Italian restaurant anywhere! Best in the area and the best that I've visited. We always visit here multiple times while we're in the Marquette/Ishpeming area. Staff is always extremely friendly and we love the atmosphere. I have yet to find something on the menu I don't like. My favorites include the manicotti and the steaks are just amazing. The cuts of meat are always wonderful!!! read more
