this was straight up an incredible cake…read more from the time i took my first bite, i was immediately surprised as to how flavorful this was the amount of milk soaked in this cake, and the amount that the cake absorbed, was unreal i'm pretty used to dry cakes at this point - so the cake being this wet was so unique when you think about a cake being wet, normally it's not a good thing, but in this case the surrounding milk had so much flavor, so much sweetness, that it gave each bite of the normally-boring cake inside an incredible taste speaking of the sweetness, this was an astoundingly sweet cake, maybe the sweetest cake i've ever had however, this wasn't sickly sweet - on the contrary the sweetness, combined with the milk flavor, created a powerful taste that was absolutely fantastic this place was also unique in the amount of milk used - there was so much that the bottom of the cake box was almost full of milk this had a disadvantage - that i'll get to later - but the advantage was that it drenched every part of the cake in that sweet milk goodness I'd never had tres leches cake before - so I didn't know what to expect - but I simply didn't expect a cake to be this flavorful, the result of pouring three types of milk over the finished cake The whipped cream icing on top also tasted pretty good what makes this cake great can really be seen when comparing it to other cakes other cakes have an inside that's light and fluffy - they have some flavor but the real flavor comes from the icing in this cake, due to the milk and sugar mixture that gets absorbed into the cake, each inside bite comes with that icing flavor + better with that said, this gets really close to a perfect score, but I can't give it that for a couple reasons Firstly, the icing is just whipped cream. Which is fine - it tasted good - but I can't help but think a real icing would've made this a lot better. The whipped cream is simply too airy and light to really taste like anything Secondly, the cake is simply too runny. I recognize this is part of what brings the flavor in, but the downside of this is when taking out slices of the cake (and not eating it directly from the box) the milk gets all over your plate and the texture isn't great. It was fortuitous to be driving southbound on Roosevelt on Saturday morning after 11am (8/5/23), plus snagged a nearby parking spot to check this out. It is always a good sign when there were literally folks walking from all points in the neighborhood and converging at this corner. Loved seeing how the baked goods were all arranged, definitely enticing. I ended up purchasing two lemon bars ($3.50 each), two large chocolate chip cookies ($3 each), and one Key Lime tart ($7.50). I appreciated the care taken to place the items into bags. By the way, the chocolate chip cookies were great with a schmear of Nutella or warmed up and eaten with a scoop of ice cream, respectively. Turns out I have been under a rock as this neighborhood pop up has been in business on Saturday mornings for three years! Later, I enjoyed reading about the business owners and their respective culinary/pastry professional backgrounds via their website (seattlebackyardbakery.com). I love supporting local, indie pop ups and brick and mortars. Seattle's Maple Leaf neighborhood is definitely lucky to have local cafes and bakeshops such as Cafe Javasti, Blue Saucer, Cloud City, Macrina, and Backyard Bakery all within close proximity to each other. I look forward to returning on future Saturdays to try additional sweet and savory items from their product line.

They have a great variety of cookies with tons of different flavors, plus gluten-free, vegan, protein, nut/no nuts, and other options. I love that the cookies are laid out where you can see everything and pick exactly what you want (good layout for little kids to see too). I also noticed mini jeni's ice creams which would be delicious with the cookies but didn't see any signage about it. The staff was really friendly, and I'll be coming back to try more!

On this visit, I tried the Matcha Strawberry. The matcha flavor was rich, and the frozen strawberries balanced the sweetness perfectly. Other flavors we love include their strawberry and banana strawberry pops. They never disappoint! The store itself is really clean, with the option to add toppings to your pop. They also have plenty of outdoor seating, which is a great bonus.

I liked how they put chocolate chips in the chocolate sponge - it was a nice surprise. I thought the to-go bag system is kind of impractical though. Seeing that the bag they have doesn't have handles, I initially said no to a bag. Then the lady wrapped the dish with the cake slice with a Saran Wrap and handed it over (pictured). I was expecting she put the cake in a container so I was surprised. I knew I wouldn't feel great carrying the cake on the bus like I'm at a cocktail party, so I asked for the brown bag. Maybe this place wants to encourage customers to eat in? They could do a better job with the container, but I might as well come in ready with my own container next time.

We loved how it turned out. I am a bit bothered that you can't collaborate on the cake design at all given how much I paid, but oh well. Secondly, the actual cake was very nice and tender. We all enjoyed that. However, the frosting tasted terrible. Honestly it tasted more like vegetable shortening than butter. It left a really greasy taste on the tongue, and didn't have much flavor at all. It was far too heavy. I understand that may be partly required for the design of the cake... but I have had cakes like this that tasted way better. And on the design front, where I am from, you can collaborate with the bakery in your local grocery store for a fully unique cake -- and get a cake for $40 that both looks and tastes amazing. I had so much fun doing that last time and the bakery came with great ideas. That simply does not exist in Seattle... bit of a bummer.
