I LOVE Mama Thai! One of my favorites in the Oak Park area. The Tom Kha soup is the best I've ever had at a Thai Restaurant (I add tofu) and I recently just tried their spicy basil with ground chicken- DELICIOUS! Simple unassuming Thai place that was so good! Service was quick and friendly and the prices were decent for the portion size. I had the khee mao which I asked for extra spicy. And usually at most Thai places, when I ask for spicy they basically add black pepper or a shake of crushed red pepper flakes, sooo not spicy at all. Which is why I make sure to emphasize I actually want my food extra extra extra spicy to the point of almost bringing tears to my eyes (yes my stomach hates me). So I was pleasantly surprised when my food was actually spicy!!! Buuuttttttt I chose duck as my meat option, which is an extra $4, and there was barely any duck in the dish. So next time I would probably just get chicken instead of trying to bougie. My friend had the yellow curry and loved it. Because, when the woman sitting at the table behind us told the waitress that there wasn't a changing station in the restroom, the waitress told her that she could CHANGE HER BABY'S DIAPER ON THE TABLE. The reviews here are pretty hit or miss, but we decided to try it. It was practically empty on a Friday night. We ordered our food and waited a pretty long while for it to arrive to us. When it did, it was cold and really didn't taste good at all. I had asked the waitress for no mushrooms, and my dish ended up being full of them. I told the waitress and she took it back. After waiting another 10 minutes for my food to arrive, it came back with hair in it. I sent it back again, but I had lost my appetite. We won't be returning. read more

I don't think this place is authentic Thai because everything we ordered was ... like nothing I've seen or eaten before. For an appetizer, we got the shrimp tempura, except what was brought to the table was a plate of deep fried breaded vegetables and very little shrimp...shrimp was also deep fried. I was very confused and honestly quite put off. My main dish was beef pad thai and I honestly almost sent it back. There were plenty of noodles and vegetables, but, I kid you not...and yes, I counted, there were seriously 5 baby cutlets of tasteless beef in the entire dish. The food was bad and the service wasn't any better. It took 15-20 minutes after being seated for someone to come over and take drink/app orders. Good Thai food, but not the best Thai in the area. I went here with friends as neighboring New Rebozo was packed, due to the aftermath of being recently featured on Check Please! We were fortunate that Mama Thai was open, as we walked over there from a friend's house. Mama Thai, like others have said, is average Americanized Thai fare. It's low on flavor and spice, and big on being middle-of-the road. It's location is spectacular, right by the Blue line and bustling Madison street in Oak Park and Forest Park. Rama chicken tasted more like melted peanut butter with a lot of broccoli and little bits of chicken. The Pad Thai is also average and bland in flavor. I'm sure there are some dishes on the menu that might be hidden gems here, but everything's a bit on the pricey side. On the plus side, service is fast and attentive. I love Mama Thai. When I'm in the mood for Thai, this is the first place on my mind. They do deliver. You can also call in for pick up. I love eating at Mama Thai. The portions are a bit large, so I always take it home. Bring your friends and catch up here. You get seated quickly, and the servers don't check in too often. My favorite appetizer is their Chicken Satay. If I'm feeling soup then I order their Tom Kha Soup. It's a brothy and spicy flavor that I find a bit addictive. It's hard to explain. I'm not normally a mushroom person, but I really don't mind the mushrooms in this soup. It's a pick up the bowl and drink kind of good soup for me. The noodle dishes... Pad Thai, Pad Woon Sen, BBQ Pork, I'm in love with all three of those. If I had to pick one to be my favorite though, it would be their BBQ Pork Noodle. I'm not sure what it is, but even the noodles have a little bit of that sweet and savory with a bit of spice flavor to it. Simple but effective. As far as their rice dishes go, it's hands down their Ginger Chicken for me. Could help that I love ginger. For curry, I love their Red Curry, and Panang Curry. Red Curry has coconut milk which I love mixed with the rice. Panang Curry has their peanut flavor and coconut milk. I find their Panang Curry a bit heavier but I love it. Their Red Curry is something I would bring to work the next day and eat for lunch because it's not too heavy. What to drink with my food? Try their Thai Iced Coffee, or just water. Their food is wonderful, and not too expensive with large portions. Large meaning if I'm really hungry I can eat almost all of it, or have half and bring the rest for lunch the next day. The difference between the two spots is that Mama Thai is more contemporary aesthetically and a nicer place to take a date. Their crab rangoon rocks and the shrimp and crabmeat stuffed shell is tasty but you'll be disappointed in the quantity if its a shared appetizer. The mongolian beef was spicy and tasty. I have been incredibly disappointed with Mama Thai the past few times we have ordered food from them. They used to be out take out favorite. However, the last time we ordered from them my chicken pad Thai came as tofu. We ordered from them again tonight and there was a stone - a legit, 1/4" sized rock - in the veggie roll that I ate. I would not normally go to Oak Park to eat Thai food, but this place came highly recommended. I don't usually stray far from Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, or Lard Nar. I went with the Chicken Pad Thai, and we ordered Tofu Satay as an app. I can't go to a Thai Restaurant without trying the Iced Coffee, and I must say that the Iced Coffee here is one of the best that has touched my lips. I wanted to ask for a Venti but alas it was not a Starbucks. The Chicken Pad Thai was deli-wait for it...cious. Yes I stole that from Barney Stinson, because I'm awwwesome (in high pitched voice). Mama Thai was my 1st experience with Thai food. Growing up in a small town in central Illinois, the closest thing to exotic cuisine was the Chinese delivery restaurant. My first time there, I ordered Pad Thai since I heard it is the classic dish and most people like it. I loved it (with extra limes). Additional tries would be their: mild curry, pangang curry, woonsen pad thai (for lower carbs), chicken basil, golden grab, cucumber salad and many more. Delicious. My friend and I went here one night because we were steadfast in finding a good a nice place to eat in Oak Park that wouldn't make us absurdly poor. This was it. We both went full out and did appetizer, soup, entree. All were delicious and all we could talk about how great it was. I want to come back more often but never get the chance. I was pleasantly surprised by this place! The food was very good and very reasonably priced. Service was quick and efficient as well. The restaurant is actually bigger than you'd think it would be from the outside. We had the pot stickers (very tasty), pad thai (also very tasty), and pad see ew (I know I spelled that wrong, but again, tasty). Small beer and wine list, and strangely Heineken is the same price as MGD. I'm not complaining though. They also have a couple of appropriate imports (Tsing Tao and something else that escapes me). And Sake, though we didn't try it. We'll be sure to do that next time. Parking is nonexistent, though it's usually not terribly hard to find something on Madison. It's a seat-yourself kind of place, or at least it seemed to be. If not, I guess we were a bit gauche. read more

This is a great Thai place, unexpected for the location, it's right on the edge of the "wrong side of the tracks" in Oak Park. Everything I've had here is wonderful, but it is a little bit on the pricey side for Thai food. If it's busy, expect to wait a little bit for your food, but at least it'll be hot and freshly made. We usually get the chicken satay to start, and they are about as good as anywhere else. The chicken is a little firmer than other places, you really have to tear it off the skewer. Peanut sauce is really good. Their chicken pad thai is awesome, some of the best I've had. But my hands down favorite is the beef pad see ewe - OMG it's sooo good, I could eat the whole thing myself. We usually get like a coconut chicken curry dish - and while it's good, the potatoes are never cooked enough for me, but I find that at all thai restaurants. One of the best things they have is their Thai iced coffee - WOW is it good. Apparently they use real coffee (and not Thai coffee) so it's stronger than most places, and they use condensed milk and regular milk - it's both strong and sweet at the same time - YUM. If you go during lunch, order one afterwards to bring back to the office with you to keep you up, b/c you'll be falling asleep otherwise from all the food. A tip - if you're a regular, you can place your order ahead of time and they'll have it ready for you shortly after you sit down. Street parking in the area during lunchtime is pretty easy, but I cannot comment about during the evenings. read more

I can't believe I haven't Yelped this place before. I have been here a very long time ago. However, the other day, I was craving Thai and the I used Yelp to locate Mama Thai as being close to my work. It was so good, I came here twice that same week! The second time, I brought three of my coworkers. It was only about 15 minutes from work and we all enjoyed the food so much. They have a fantastic lunch special for $7.95 that includes a single serving appetizer (such as one small egg roll), a cup of soup and the entree. The food came out quickly and was delicious! My standard of measure for 5 star Thai restaurants is "Your Choice" in Glenview about 10 years ago during its hey day under the former owner. Mama Thai hasn't surpassed their food, but they do a really good job. Their chicken pad thai is excellent and a good sized order at a fair price. Their tod mun (fried fish cakes) makes a great appetizer and is also among the best I've had. They deliver too - fairly quickly to the far north side of Oak Park, which is a real bonus. I have been a customer here for years. Food has been good. I especially like their signature dish Pad Thai. I carried it out twice and recently carried it out and it was terrible. Very dry and spicy with pieces of hot peppers in it. I called to complain and requested a credit from the manager for the next time I would order. He told me that I had to bring this order back immediately the same day uneaten and they would remake it. I told him I lived a ways away and did not want to come back in traffic. He refused to give me any future credit. Very bad customer relations especially during COVID when restaurants should try to be customer focused. I will never go back here! There are plenty of Asian restaurants to choose from other than this one. I am being generous giving them three stars. read more

Mama Thai is great. It's nearby where I live so it's become a no brainer if I want a quick Thai fix for a reasonable price. Warning - if you like your Thai food so spicy it makes you cry, probably go somewhere else. Although they have spicier dishes, Mama Thai is more about developing rich and robust flavors. I love the tofu soup, red/green/mild curries, and the cashew chicken and red snapper are also favorites. If you like Thai Iced Tea, they do a good one here. read more

Lordy, Lordy - Some of these reviewers don't know a darn thang about Thai food! We went into Mama Thai for a casual, late-night dinner. The restaurant claimed that they closed at 9:30pm, yet when we walked in at 8:10pm they told us that the kitchen was closing in 15 minutes. Hmmm. For appetizers we ordered the vegetable egg rolls and vegetable tempura. The egg rolls? Not bad. The tempura? I'm not quite sure what it was. All I know is that it was so deeply fried with so much oil that I almost felt pimples popping out of my face with every single bite. You couldn't taste the carrots or broccoli - instead you felt droplets of oil dripping from your pores. It was disgusting and almost gave me a case of the runs at the table. But if that weren't enough! For our entrees we ordered one Pepper and Garlic Beef in addition to one Vegetable Panang Curry. The second our waiter put my beef in front of me, I took one look at it and immediately began to comment on how cheap the meat was...Without even tasting it! And when I put the first bite into my mouth? Yep - VILE. I'm not even sure that this was really beef, to be quite honest with you. None of the grocery stores in my area, not even the little hole-in-the-wall stores, sell beef of such a poor quality. Pieces of tendon and fat were hanging off of my slices of beef to the point where I almost vomited what I couldn't chew...Right there at the table. When I lifted most of the beef off of my plate so that I could eat my plain white rice for dinner? That's right! The bottom of my plate was covered in so much liquified fat that it surrounded my rice. So I thought that the Vegetable Panang Curry would be much better. WRONG AGAIN! At first bite, the panang sauce had a pretty interesting flavor but you could immediately tell that the vegetables weren't cooked fully. Shortly after swallowing this sauce, your stomach and esophagus agreed to disagree... But I didn't even begin to tell you about the service, now did I? Well, I mentioned that they informed us that the kitchen was closing 15 minutes after we arrived...Which was over an hour before the restaurant was due to close. As we were picking through our appetizers, the employees began to discuss when they could leave the store - including our waiter, who kept pacing back and forth in front of our table. At one point he had our check in his hand which I'm assuming he was intending on delivering. Thankfully he chose not to do so. We hadn't even gotten our entrees yet and chances are, I would've walked out of the restaurant at that point and risked the Oak Park Police Department coming after me for non-payment of inedible food. As we signed our credit card slip and stood up from the booth, all of the employees within the restaurant (including the chefs) came walking towards the door. We weren't even on the sidewalk and the lights were off! Ridiculous. Purely ridiculous. And the worst part about the whole thing? Under no circumstance should you be suffering from a burning anus, nausea and terrible heartburn when you ate no more than two bites of your food. And when you're chewing raspberry mint gum, yet the taste of Panang continues to fill your mouth, there's a problem. All in all? The end of our night was spent looking into the toilet and seeing a mirror image of what we ate...And that would be pure shit. read more
