This is our go to Thai restaurant for 20 ish years! I like their pepper beef, pad se ew, and my fam loves their pad thai. Crab rangoons are also one of our faves! For this particular day, I needed comfort food to get over a little cold. I was super congested. So I ordered online with some special requests and I was SO touched that they accommodated all of them -- including my ask for the original chilled broccoli appetizer that they no longer serve. They knew exactly what I was talking about tho! They also delivered on making my curry very spicy, which definitely cleared out my congestion haha. Although I don't frequent the area anymore, I have been a very loyal patron of about 2 decades. The temperatures of the interior have always been extremely comfortable, no matter the weather. They now have a significant outdoor seating area with a "border". Thai spring rolls still entail the same flavors as the 1st time!!! Both waitresses are the ABSOLUTE sweetest with their beautiful smiles!! I've witnessed that they welcome strollers & wheelchairs through the alternative front door! I have been going to Penny's in Sheffield since 1991 and have been obsessed with their Pad Se Eu since. My last 3 orders from the one in Oak Park have sucked. 1) had two pieces of broccoli ($36 order) 2) they forgot the sweetened soy sauce ($55 order) 3) today they forgot the hot sauce (the best part) - ($40 order) - over $100 of disappointing noodles. The food had no flavor WHATSOEVER the rolls tasted like grass wrapped in a wet noodle. It arrived above room temp and no napkins or anything else. I wasn't going to leave this horrible review because I like to be kind about my reviews but they refused to give me even partial compensation. the staff is pretty nice (I'll give them that) but the vibe in the restaurant is pretty yt washed. No utensils. Hot sauce is just hot w/ no flavor (LOOK AT ALL THE SEASONINGS I HAD TO USE) and it still wasn't enough to cover the blandness. This place should be ashamed of themselves. If I could give Penny's 10 stars I would. My wife and I were not feeling well and we ordered some chicken noodle soup. This is the best chicken noodle I have ever had in my life and will swear that it will cure any cold. They also deliver to downtown and do so pretty quickly which is incredible! Great food! Came with a vegan and vegetarian friend and they enjoyed their meals. Definitely ask for their chili sauce to top the meal (it's very good). I usually do not like leaving local restaurants reviews like this but the food was that bad. The Pad Thai was overcooked and lacked flavor. The noodles were stuck together and the chicken tasted old. The Chicken Satay was just as bad. If you are going to charge $20 for an entree you need to put more care into your food. read more

The few things I tried on my first visit were great in taste and flavor. Look forward to trying some more dishes from this location. The waitress was very friendly. I would easily give this place five stars I'd say for the great taste, and the presentation being nicer than the dining area not saying that it was bad it's more of a complement to the food and presentation saying you're preparing meals that look like they're served at a five-star restaurant so the seating area could be a little bit more comfortable in my opinion place was clean and food was delicious. The service was so nice and friendly, and the place was clean! The pad Thai wasn't my favorite compared to lots of others. The Lad Nar wasn't my favorite either/ the chicken was hard. The pad see ew seemed to dark in color for the sauce. We left feeling a little ill from all the sugars in the sauces. read more

I ordered take out from this establishment. I was craving pho and read many reviews that Penny's is the place to go! It was incredibly empty at the time so I was happy because it means quicker service. I saw on the menu that pho was listed for $13.50. When I ordered two bowls with chicken, we were charged $4.00 for the meat. The hostess/ cashier stated that $13.50 is regular and all meat is extra. Now I've been eating pho for years - anyone knows that authentic pho naturally comes with beef and beef broth. Any alterations are extra. So I was not a fan of the last minute switch-a-roo. The broth was more on the sweet side rather than savory so I wasn't a fan. Also my chicken was dark dark meat and super dry. I did enjoy the large amount of broth given and the abundance of noodles. Another good Thai spot I am marking in my book! I came with a group and the service was good and fast. I usually have my go too for food at a Thai restaurant but I have been wanting gai kra praow. I immediately saw minced chicken....usually it should be ground chicken but I thought why not. It came out delicious! I was happy with my decision. Everyone else's food looked delicious! I picked my parents up from their doctor and started down North Avenue towards their usual carry out spot. Suddenly mom asked "what was that noodle place you were talking about? Can you eat from there?" (I have celiac disease) I had stopped into Penny's Noodle Shop a few days ago and been totally charmed by their gentleness. My questions had been patiently answered. The location was nostalgic for my family -- my mom's first office (fresh out of law school in 1980) had been on the corner of Chicago and Harlem. I had sent her a text suggesting that we stop in and try it and now she had remembered. "Yes." They had assured me that they would take suitable precautions. Cross contamination is always a risk when dining out, but a clean and knowledgeable restaurant can service a celiac. I pick my spots and was willing to give them a chance. I turned and asked my dad "I can order Singapore noodles for you." Dad: they won't be like noodles in Singapore! Food over there... (I'll spare you Yelpers this long lecture.) So we went to Penny's. My mom was instantly delighted with the welcome. We ordered Singapore Noodles and Pad Se Ew with beef as our gluten-free entrees and Fried Rice with Beef and Pad Thai with tofu for everyone else. My mom and I also got a cute little sake to go. At home my finicky dad dug into the Singapore noodles and declared them "very Singaporean!" They were al dente and mild rather than hot with a nice balance of flavor and spice. Finding new places for my dad to enjoy is a great joy to me and that would have been enough but everything we ordered was just wonderful. Penny's became an instant family favorite. I used to go to Penny's noodles a lot when I was younger, and after moving out of state I feared it would go downhill. For my engagement dinner, we ordered all of my favorite dishes and had a spread. It brought tears to my eyes! Everything was just as amazing as I remembered. The Tom yum soup broth is life-changing (even though I miss their old mushrooms), and the curry fried rice with tofu was perfection. The peanut sauce goes with everything, and since we got a big container, we were able to enjoy several more meals with peanut sauce. If I could choose again, I would still get Penny's. Me and my friend sat down like 45 min before closing and left a little later than closing time and they were very nice about it. Crab rangoon: These were good! No complaints. They were more creamy on the inside with less imitation crab. I like when crab rangoons look like my picture rather than your typical ones they serve you at chinese restaurants. They just look more appealing. They were pretty big in size too. Red curry rice plate: I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and I've never tried thai curry. I added beef to my rice plate cause the original doesn't come with meat. This dish was good but not great. The menu said it would be spicy and it wasn't spicy at all. 2 stars because we've ordered from here before to ok effect.. but had to throw away basically all of what I've received last night in the name of Thai food. One of the worst excuses for Pad Thai ever put together by mankind, a supposedly chicken one with a sticky -way too brown- sauce, awful tasting sprouts, no nuts or lime to be seen anywhere. Crab Rangoons felt like they were filled with dish soap, offensively bland "tasting". Tom Yum soup was ok at best, tasting somewhere between vinegar and broth. Charging $16 for a pad Thai and then another $2-4 for protein and serving this kind of awful food is unforgivable. Won't be ordering again. read more

They do delivery with Door Dash, our driver was not wearing a mask when he came to our door. Though the food was ready quick and arrived at our door fast. There was hope of a delicious meal, but that was not the case. The Spring rolls were overpowered by the Thai basil, and lacking of much else than noodles. The crispy rolls were nice. The Pad Thai was just gross, it had a bad smell and tasted like the smell, did not even try to eat it. All sauces were runny and limited of flavor. read more

I have only ordered here a couple times and we had a great dinner this last time. We ordered pick up for a nice weeknight dinner. We started with some fresh spring rolls that came with a peanut dipping sauce that was delish. It also came with their house salad, which came with mandarin oranges. Nice and lite! We shared a couple of dishes. The chicken pad Thai was tasty - a standard dish that they did very well. This was the first time I tried egg noodles with barbecue pork and the Gai Kra Praow. Both were very flavorful. The gai kra praow had the right amount of heat - this was our favorite dish. The egg noodle dish was good too. Next time, I want to try one of their noodle soup dishes! So disappointed. I have ordered from Penny's Noodles in the city in the past; even dined-in recently. It was not at the top of my list, but ok. Today I placed an order of Pad Thai Noodles with shrimp for pickup and literally all I got was noodles upon opening the container. I was really not happy, to say the least. I phones the restaurant and was transfer to whom I would assume is the manager on duty today. I told him my issue and stated that I wanted it corrected. Instead of rectifying the situation, he begins to tell me what goes in PadThai...really!!! I know what goes in Pad Thai and that the shrimp (ordered as an addition) is weighed; so if you order shrimp, you probably get about 5....I informed him that I really did not care about the shrimp, the vegetables were more important.... Bottom line, he stated this is how they make it and I was pretty much stuck with it....really??? Is this customer service? I even stated I could bring it back to show him. He stated that they cannot take food back. (I know this)..I simply wanted to show him that I was not complaining for nothing and for them to re-make my order. The answer to that was I was stuck with this order...so basically "SOL". I will never eat or order from here again! A casual restaurant on the corner with a variety of different Asian cuisines. Thai food dominates the menu, but the dishes I tried have slight differences compared to other places (not a bad thing). Huge portions and they do not skimp on the proteins. There's lots of tables for seating and the service is very fast. Decor needs a make over if you are dining in, but the place is clean. Penny's is a favorite in our house because of how adaptable it is to the varying tastes going on with us. My husband is the pickiest eater, but he can have the Kid's fried rice because it is made without onion! The kids can try the gyoza and satay and more fried rice or pad sie eew and I am happy with just about anything as long as I get a side of crab rangoon with their delicious sauce! Now that my girls are in dance class just down the street, I drop them off and get to enjoy a quiet dinner on my own while I wait!
