Ok this is going to be as honest as I can. The place is beautiful and designed very well. The vibe is great and it's located on the water. Service was okay, as far as attentiveness. I will say that I asked for them to make me a grilled chicken sandwich or "chicken burger" and it's not on the menu. I don't eat seafood or beef. There is grilled chicken and pasta on the menu just fyi. This was a recommendation from a local coffee shop. I would say it's not horrible but it's not the best food I've ever had. We had our first dinner on the island here. The shrimp Alfredo was smothered in peppers and onions, very salty and lacked flavor beyond the salt. Disappointing considering how big and juicy the shrimp were, ruined the whole dish. Wings that my son had looked good and the piña coladas lacked flavor as well. We happened upon this place after a fantastic day at Flamenco Beach. We just wanted to pass the time before boarding the ferry back to our hotel. I'm SO happy we went! Ask to sit near the water. Especially at night. They allow you to feed the scraps to the local fish. Drinks are STRONG and fresh. The restaurant is clean, bathrooms are exceptionally well maintained. Best part? Stay after dark. Feed the huge fish and stingrays. They even light up the restaurant I the evening so you can take pictures of your experiences with the local sea life. Umm..and cheesecake! We stayed in culebra at mamacitas guest house right above the restaurant and bar. They do not take reservations and the restaurant gets quite crowded in the evenings as it is one of the top recommended eateries in the town. My party of 6 came in around 7 and we waited about 40 minutes for a table. They have a cute bar that we were able to drink and wait at. The restaurant is right next to the canal, with pretty light fixtures and a great vibe. Our server was great as well! It took over an hour for our food to come out. But the setting and weather were so great our wait time was a breeze. I got the salmon filet, for $30 I found the fish to be quite dry. As was our mahi filet. We enjoyed the rice and beans. Our server was personable and made sure to check on us regularly. There are big fish in the canal that they encourage you to feed your leftovers to. It was fun to watch them in the water. The bar seems to get a bit rowdy the later it gets. Overall I enjoyed dinner at mamacitas and I recommend them! read more

Very surprised by some of the comments. Contrary to one review I read the drinks we ordered were only $8.50 so I'm not sure how you could say that is too expensive. I ordered the seafood linguine. I've ordered this dish in all the Italian restaurants in New York and all over Italy and this was the best I have ever had. Service was great also. If you want great drinks, great food, and great service at a reasonable price I strongly suggest give this restaurant a try. read more

On a recent 3-day tour of the Spanish Virgin Islands we anchored offshore of Culebra. On the recommendation of a fellow sailor familiar with the area, we had our group from two catamarans dinghy the crews up the canal to dine at Mamacitas. So glad we did! It's a fun place, and a bit of an adventure to get there. Service was good, even for our large party. We started with a margarita and the "Mamacitas Drink" (rum, juices, guava), both were very good. The table shared several appetizers, including coconut shrimp, grouper bites and croquets jamon (fried ham/cheese balls). The grouper bites and the croquets jamon were so good, we ordered a second round of each of those... deelish! For entrees, the table ordered many different things, the ones we sampled were the red snapper filet, the mahi mahi filet, and the skirt steak. Sides included grilled veggies, fried yucca chips, plantains and salads. All the food was good, special tip of the cap to the red snapper filet, it was the best of the bunch. It was a good dinner, enjoyed by all. The crews were happy that the recommendation turned out to be legit. Really cool thing at night, they turn the dock lights on and a group of huge tarpon fish congregate there and diners toss them food scraps. Probably not the best diet for the fish, but fun to watch! The food here is amazing and the staff are extremely friendly and you can also stay here if you would like they have rooms and it's in a great location not to far from the beaches and other shops and stores to shop at it's also near the ferry if you want to go back to the mainland also the restaurant has outdoor seating where you can eat and watch the fish swim and small boats pass by, overall I would come back for sure the food was extremely tasty and the staff was welcoming and friendly and professional definitely a 10/10. We got to the restaurant for an early dinner. Good thing because after we sat, the restaurant started to fill up. It's nice to be able to sit next to the water and see people fishing and driving their boats by. The food was amazing. Probably the best food on the Island. We had the coconut shrimp to start which my kids loved. We also shared the seafood pasta and the stuffed grouper. I would come back for both! The service was great considering they were short staffed. Our server was attentive and really sweet. She gave the kids some food to feed the fish. The only bad thing was the amount of flies. They were hovering around our food and made it difficult to enjoy the food unless you swallowed the entire plate at once. I think we're going to try yo do take out and eat it at our house. Had the chance to return recently. I still think the quality is inconsistent and a shadow of what it used to be. For example, my parents were disappointed with their fish, but my wife and I liked our dishes (carne frita and pasta respectively). I will say the bushwacker I had was better than the last time. So at least they improved on that. Overall, the experience hasn't put me off from ever coming back here, but it's not my first or second choice anymore... unless maybe I just wanted to drink at the bar. Mamacita's was one of the first restaurants I went to when I first visited Culebra. It's a very nice and colorful place. The food is generally good. So are the drinks. I like their bushwackers. The first bushwacker I had, actually, was here. The atmosphere is lively and fun in the evenings. Sometimes they have live music. In the day the place is more laid back and relaxing. In my experiences eating here, I've found they are better with their beef and pork dishes than they are with their fish dishes. The last time I was here, our fish dinner was so-so, but then we ate hamburgers and BBQ spareribs for lunch, and they were excellent. This latest visit (last week) was similar. We came in for dinner. I had the carne frita with rice and beans and my husband had the linguini with alfredo sauce and strips of churrasco. They were both very good. The pasta dish was huge. However, my in laws ordered the cartucho fish and were disappointed. My mother in law ended up returning it. The waitress was polite about it and discounted it from our bill. The onion rings were also good. Surprisingly, my 3 year old son loved them. He never eats onions. read more

First off, our appetizer was very small portion. Our coconut shrimp dish had 5 shrimps for $11. The price wasn't even labeled on the menu. The server was not very attentive to our needs nor checked up on us. Had to pay for water. We also waited for over an hour for our food to come and it was very frustrating because we had a ferry to catch. With a great interior and an open view to an entrance of a lake, I thought it would be a great restaurant to stop by in Culebra to conclude our trip. I was greatly disappointed by the overpriced food and the annoying wait. Do not come, not worth the time and money. With a group of 6, we were charged 18% gratituity, for the server to come to us once while we waited for an hour, and it's not like she had to fill her water or anything. It took 30 minutes to receive our drinks and then we did not see our server for another 20 when we finally got our food ONE HOUR LATER my entre was ICE COLD I HANDED MY PLATE BACK TO THE SERVER WHO DID NOTHING ABOUT MY ICE COLD CHURRASCO. The pork was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and the rice was great both seasoned exceptionally. First of all when we checked out the restaurant on maps it said it was 3/5 stars, but honestly that's completely ridiculous!!! This was a great experience and it all starts with the service. Everyone that took care of us was great, there was 8 of us which can be a lot for not a big sized restaurant but they took care of us immediately. All of the servers were great no complaints and got everything correct that we ordered. The setting of the place was gorgeous, right by a nice river where you can feed these massive fish and the lighting was beautiful. Now to get to the food. No notes. Everything was cooked to perfection I'd highly recommend the Yuca Mofongo or literally any of the seafood. Even my father, who just got a cheeseburger said his food was delicious! So if you're in the area check this place out. DO NOT pay attention to the review on yelp, this is easily a 4-4.5 star place! read more

I've dined at Mamacita's every time I visited the island and I've always enjoyed their food. The wait staff is friendly and helpful with going over the menu items. I typically order their mofongo with a side of beans and rice and they've always tasted great! Lots of flavor and the mofongo is served with a type of garlic cream creole sauce that elevates the dish. This most recent trip I ordered the trifongo with chicken that came with a side salad. Not pictured was the beans and rice. What's nice about this restaurant is that it is usually open throughout the week when other restaurants aren't. Also, it is situated next to the water so I like to share pieces of my meal with the giant fish swimming around. I'll be coming back the next visit! read more
