We got the 8-piece dark meat chicken only, plus a biscuit and a medium rice dressing, and it was a lot of food for two people. The chicken was super juicy with a little kick of spice, crispy on the outside and cooked perfectly inside. The biscuit was bigger than your average biscuit--soft, buttery, and really good. I'm in Opelousas a few times a year (from Texas) and always stop at Mama's Fried Chicken. The chicken is seasoned just right, crispy outside, tender inside. Recently, though, I've been getting the fish or shrimp po boys, which are an excellent buy (everything here is reasonable priced, so you can feed the family at Mama's affordably) and delicious--they are a bit smaller than what you'd get at most cajun restaurants, but they cost a bit less. We were passing through headed to Texas for the holidays. We saw this little gem and decided to stop and grab a bite. I'm glad we did. The staff was nice, prompt and very friendly. They were getting the orders in and out; so the wait was very short. The food smelled great. The place was well lit and very noticeable from the road. The restaurant was clean and neatly decorated. The restroom was clean as well. Baby let me tell you that chicken was hot, fresh and seasoned to perfection with their mama seasoning and it was good!!!!! While the pieces themselves were delicious, the sandwich's chicken pieces were poorly added....especially since one had bones while the other did not. The place was old and looked to have been around for years and busy. Don't let the area and building stop you, the food is the perfect. The chicken is what southern chicken is suppose to taste like. I also tried the okra and gizzard, they were great but needed a little hot sauce. All and all it was a perfect choice for a fast food meal. And, with four cop cars in the parking lot, it appears Opelousa's finest know what's up. 5 star fried chicken, tenders, gizzards, burgers, etc. make up the list of greasy, yet yummy, entrees. We also had sides of red beans and rice - tasty and spicy - fried corn fritters, fries pickles and homemade bread. And, to finish with a hurculean carb coma, definitely try the fried Oreos. The batter on these bad boys is funnel cake-ish and they come with a sugary drizzle. Really good stuff. Mama's is not diet friendly, but it's apex comfort food.
