The food at this lunch counter was fantastic! If I lived in Louisiana, I would eat here for lunch at least once a week. The quantity and variety of options was wonderful and very creative. All the sandwiches were named after Old Hollywood celebrities. Don't be put off by the antique store vibe, the food is delicious and the owner and help are so sweet. There are only five tables that I could see, each seating 3-4 people. We chose Back in Time because I wanted to try a muffuletta while I was in Louisiana. They did not disappoint! Their homemade olive spread was a delight. I wish they sold it by the jar and it would have come back to Oklahoma with me. I'd always meant to stop at the little local place on the square, near the Bowie Oak. I'm so glad I finally did. It's tiny and charming, and has the most friendly and helpful owner, Ms. Wanda! Back in Time sort of combines an antique and collectible shop with a cafe! It's cozy and easy to like. It's a great place to stop at if you are passing through as it's right on US Highway 190 West right on the south side of the courthouse square. The menu is something to explore. It has a wide variety of soups, salads, and wraps all of which have interesting names. Some are named after local historic figures, others have names associated with famous persons or movie stars. All of them are tasty and vary from the light to the fully filling. The salad offerings also go from the small to the whole meal variety. This is one of those great little home town places that one just has to experience to understand. You'll find yourself stopping there next time you pass through. read more

Dirty. Maybe this place was something back n time, but it should not be open anymore. It is packed full of antiques and dust. We stopped to eat on our way home from a weekend in New Orleans. My first thought after using the restroom (in the back near a makeshift kitchen) was to leave, but decided to go against my better judgement. Our two sandwiches were nothing special, lacking flavor and presentation. They took about thirty minutes to get. The iced tea was served with a cracker wrapper in it. Next to our table on the floor was a quite large dead cockroach. The owner was kind, but probably should hang up her apron. We will stick to the fast food available off the main Hwy time. read more

Poor lady tried very hard. Saturday before Christmas when 9 of us walked in she was overwhelmed. It took 2 hours for the food to come out. The salad was good but sandwiches need lots of work. Place needs to clean out the junk that is in there. Menus should be laminated so you can wipe off the previous customers germs. Wanda and Caroline are fantastic people and even served me even though they were closing. Exactly the atmosphere and kindness you expect with a small town southern cafe. Muffelata was great actually and big. I've been around and from Nola. It's good and fresh. Had the corn crab soup. That needs some more seasoning and love but it was ok. The bread pudding was awesome. Worth the bloated ness I get from it. One of the top for me. Will definitely come back to try their famous salad and have a conversation. read more

We stopped at Back In Time because of the positive reviews on Yelp. And to its credit, it was surprisingly busy when we went in. But holy heck ... this place needs a serious cleaning. There was dust everywhere, but we decided to be brave and sat down; we've eaten at plenty of dives before. But the menus that we were brought were disgusting -- not just fresh food stains, but old and encrusted food stains on them simultaneously. If a restaurant can't keep the customer facing parts clean, then there's no telling what's going on in the kitchen. Given the number of positive reviews here, I'd very much like to go back and try out the food, but someone is going to need to give this place a good scrubbing before we do. read more

We stopped in downtown Opelousas on our way to Dallas for a lunch stop. We picked this restaurant since it was in the middle of town. We walked in and it was pretty crowded for lunch time. I was immediately turned off by the old dirty table covers and fly swatter sitting on the one empty table. We opted to sit outside. The waitress brought out the menus and I almost had a physical reaction to the menus. They were sticky and had food on them. We immediately got up and left. I hate to be negative but I don't see how the board of health lets this place stay open. read more

This is, as seen in other reviews, a hole in the wall. Don't be taken aback by the appearance of the place when you walk in, it is very cluttered. The menus were a bit grungy, my wife wanted to leave but I talked her into staying. She ordered the Al Capone, which is a muffuletta. We ordered a half, should have ordered a 1/4. I prefer a Fig sandwich, basically a cold cut sandwich but the kicker is the fig preserves spread. We also got the World War II which is a potato with sour cream topped with cheddar cheese, we added the sautéed shrimp just for good measure. Very good food, awesome customer service. read more

Don't be shocked by the inside! The food is delicious, fresh and not fried. It's an antique shop with about 4-5 tables. A bit quirky and disheveled. The service was wonderful and we enjoyed chatting with the locals, the owner and the cook. If you are looking for a healthy option in your travels, this place is just off 49. Worth the stop. You might not even notice it's there, but walking in there is the view of hundreds of different and colorful antiques, books, jewelry, and more and the friendly greeting I would expect from a relative. The experience was very comfortable, relaxing, and easy going. The food is creative and diverse. I enjoyed seeing things like fig sandwich and a plethora of seafood. We ordered the "Bonnie and Clyde" croissant with tuna salad, lettuce, and olives on the side, crab and corn soup. Fresh squeezed lemonade and Arnold Palmer. Fantastic! We stopped in here for lunch during a road trip and thought the food was WONDERFUL and the staff oh so friendly. We tried the chicken salad, the corn-crab-shrimp soup (yum!), salads (huge and loaded), and the potato casserole (which I was told was awesome). Everthing is homemade. Directly across from the St. Landry Courthouse, Back in Time owned by Miss Wanda is a fun hole in the wall, that serves great salads, lunches and award winning desserts. Perfect places for a ladies' lunch (with one man...lol). I had the Pearl Harbor salad. It was delicious and the ingredients were very nice and fresh. It's so hard to get a significant amount of fruits and veggies eating out, but a medium Pearl Harbor will do the trick. Grandma and Aunt had excellent things to say about the crab and corn soup, as well as the tuna and chicken salad sandwiches. Hubs did not care for the shrimp po boy. I believe this is more of a soup/salad/sandwich place. (Like I said, it's for ladies, lol!) We didn't try dessert, but saw a few awesome ones go by. I got an Italian Iced Tea and I decided it was essentially frozen lemonade in iced tea. It was quite good. I said friendly service above, but it was quite slow. I could have finished half my salad before Hubs even got his po boy. She said she messed it up and wanted to make a better one for him. Where do I even begin as this was such a wonderful place. Miss Wanda was so sweet and kind. As a local walked in, she knew him right away and what he orders. You can tell that she cares for her customers. We were taking a cross country road trip with our dog. We wanted to buy our dog something to eat. When my husband was ordering our food to go, he let them know we were buying one of the meals for our dog. They then offered to grill of a chicken breast for our dog. Not only did they cook up the chicken, they cut it into pieces for her, put it in a container and then put it into a bag. They wrote our dog's name on the bag and drew a dog on it. My husband and I LOVED our sandwiches, they were delicious. We highly recommend eating here for the an amazing sandwiches, the very friendly and wonderful staff and to me the very sweet, kind Miss Wanda who is filled with Southern hospitality. You will feel at home and you will feel and taste the love put into everything they cook. You do not want to miss the chance of eating here. We will always remember this place. Only downside is that we live in CA as I wish we were closer. read more
