I like this place, but my Korean students told me there is no real korean food in B-town. Given their verdict, I think my taste could be skewed towards "non-koreans". Most of the korean restaurants in the US are very expensive, Mama's is no exception. I would say, if you could make the dishes yourself, don't go; otherwise, this is probably one of the best places to have korean food in B-town. read more

Pros: It's one of the only Korean restaurants in town. Cons: Everything else. I am Korean and I grew up eating Korean food. To begin, the food here is incredibly overpriced. This might be due to lack of competition from other Korean restaurants in town, but many Korean dishes that are usually found for $5-10 elsewhere are $15-22 at Mamas. The menu is overpriced especially when compared to the quality of the food (low). While their selection of banchan (the side dishes) has improved over the past several years, but it is still nothing to write home about. While I would consider the dishes "authentic," remember that "authentic" does not always equate "good.". Most of the dishes could be made at home with a much better taste, which is never a good sign for a restaurant. I love supporting local ethnic restaurants, but I recently decided to boycott the place. For the bbq side of the restaurant: The quality of the red meat is low. Meat is tough, does not taste fresh, and is often over-marinated (possibly to mask the low quality of the meat?). If you are familiar with Korean bbq, you will find yourself disappointed. With that said, if you are new to Korean food/bbq, you probably will not be able to tell the difference. If you're curious about Korean food, I suggest going out of town for your first try. But if you're willing to pay the price, please don't judge all Korean cuisine based on your Mama's experience. I promise, it's better elsewhere. THE Best Korean food! Lots of good traditional food on the menu. I highly recommend the Bulkogi. Whenever I take newbies here they want "safe" and tend toward the "teriyaki chicken". Trust me on this... Take their menus and order them the Bulkogi. The grill tables are fun for parties and groups but even if there are just 2 of us eating, we still get a grill table. Haven't been here for a while and sadly I was a bit disappointed. Loved coming here before because of the side dishes. Now I'm not sure if they are under new management, the main food did not taste the same. Service was not good either, never got a refill on my drink. Hoo boy. I went here a few weeks ago. Tried to forget about it. When I decided to start a Yelp page, I had to add it. It's busy. They have great food. But it can be so hit or miss with the service. The bulgogi is divine, but man, maybe we could get a refill on our drinks once every decade? If they had more staff on busy times, then yes, do come. If they don't improve we may not go back. Took my boyfriend here for Korean BBQ. We came in, they sat us. Got our drinks, and it was my boyfriend's first time doing korean bbq so the waitress walked us through the BBQ menu. We ordered the beef short ribs (galbi) and pork belly. They brought us tongs, scissors, and a basket of lettuce. Our waitress then explained to us how to make a Korean style lettuce wrap with the bbq meat. They filled our table with a bunch of little dishes and the waitress explained to us all the different types. Personal favorite is the fishcake. The meat was delicious, I havent had galbi marinated this good in forever! We will be back!!! read more

The location is very close to the IU campus. Mama's restaurant is a VERY AUTHENTIC and has the best korean food in town. My brother and I go to get there to get their Chicken Teriyaki lunch dish all the time. The place is a bit pricey..especially if you are going to go there for dinner Time. My recommendation is to usually go during lunch time because the prices usually double by dinner time. read more

I've been to a few differen Korean restaurants in my time, mama's being one of them. Mama's offers items from single dishes on to tabletop BBQ. The one unique aspect of mama's is that they use coal and wood fired grills, so your BBQ comes out very flavorful. I moved to Bloomington from New York City where I had an office around the corner from Koreatown. I was afraid I would desperately miss the amazing Korean food, but.... There is Mama's in Bloomington. A phenomenal Korean restaurant. Many love the BBQ tables, but I really prefer to let them cook my food in the kitchen. They do a wonderful job and have a really wide ranging menu. Excellent cooking in a very traditional Korean style. The only ethnic restaurant in town where the clientele is frequently mostly Korean. Great $8 lunch menu. I love getting the ramen in the winter, because it is hot and spicy and really fills me up.

My husband took me to try Korean BBQ for the first time, and I was not disappointed! I am usually moderatly hesitant to try new foods, but this place was a tasty delight. Two phrases to describe the restaurant are the following: low quality and unreasonable prices. First of all, no offense to the servers. I had a pleasant experience with them. However, I understand this is the only place in town that offers korean barbeque, but seriously? Being a Korean student who has had Korean food practically all her life, this place is just not worth it to go. ESPECIALLY FOR THE MEAT DISHES INCLUDING BARBEQUE. Meat dishes should probably be named vegetable dishes, and their portion size is extremely small, but they charge you about double the price of what it normally costs elsewhere. For example, 17.99 for pork belly? That is just messed up, and I only see them as money-driven owners who do not truly care about their customers. Also, their prices keep increasing over time for some crazy reason, and I know many IU students around me are burdened to go there anymore because of that. I feel bad for my Korean friends who miss the taste of their home, but have to pay that much money to receive so little. South Korea has such great cuisine and after visiting for a week I didn't want to stop enjoying it. From a friends recommendation I visited Mama's and I felt like I was on the streets of Seoul again, the amazing Korean BBQ can't be beat. I went to this place twice and each time, those people operate off of two different menus with different prices. They will show you the menu with the lower prices first, and then, when they bring the bill, it will have the higher price on the bill. When you try and point out that you thought the cost for the meal was lower, they bring a menu with higher prices and show it to you. Cheaters. I won't be going back there. It was the second time this happened to me now and when I pull up the website, it lists the lower prices on the website as well. read more

I can't speak to the BBQ portion of the business, but it's a great lunch spot. It's affordable and consistent. Personally, unless you want Korean BBQ, I'd avoid dinner. It becomes pretty expensive for what you get during the dinner hour. read more
