Time to update my review as the Butcher's Smokehouse has made some changes to their building. Some things are good, some things are not as good as before the remodel. The food (thank god!) is still good. Today they had free sides with their sandwiches, so we had pulled pork with free mac and cheese and pulled chicken with free BBQ beans. The side dish portions were considerably smaller than they used to be. Not sure if that was due to the "free sides" promo or not. The pulled pork is the best in town. I always get it with the traditional BBQ sauce. They serve the sauce on the side, so you can control how much goes on your sandwich. The food was terrific, we had missed it since they were closed awhile during the remodel. So, here's what we did not like. WAY less seating. 99% of the time, we ate there at Butcher's Smokehouse. They used to have probably 6 or 7 tables. Now there is one long counter with maybe five or six tall stools. It faces the window, which faces West, and the sun was beating down on us. There were three of us sitting there. If there had been more people eating in, it would have been way too close for comfort. You need some room to eat your BBQ. Not crazy about the lack of seating. Another drag, no free drinking water. They used to have water that you could serve yourself if you didn't want soda or some other purchased beverage with your food. That option was not available today, which was an unpleasant surprise. The customer service; Chanel rocked our world as usual. She came over and chatted with us and asked us what we thought about the changes. We told her what we thought, hopefully, the feedback will make it's way to the owner. She even gave us a handful of $2 gift cards to use the next time we eat there. It was nice that she remembered us from our many trips in for BBQ before the remodel. So, I took off a star because I am bummed about the seating and the lack of water. Hopefully, they will make some tweaks and I can hang that star back up where it belongs. BUT I will say that I noticed a bit of a quality change. Clarifying this review only pertains to the sandwich/takeout part of the Butcher's Block b/c the seafood and meat store itself is excellent, but if they are going to sell sandwiches and deli salads (potato, cole slaw etc) they need major help! Honestly the worst sandwich I've eaten in a long time. They only had one bread choice (a kaiser roll - not my favorite but ok), no onions, no tomatoes (who doesn't offer this on a sandwich?) We got the tuna salad and potato salad. Potato salad just terrible. Tuna salad itself was just ok but the whole thing was ruined by the nastiest kaiser roll imaginable. We stopped for lunch on a Sunday. Everything looked and tasted pre-made and heated up. The meat is served dry and you select from a variety of pre-packaged sauces. The sauces were tasty but directly out of fridge - so you have warm meat and cold sauce. I would rather have a squirt bottle of room temp cheap sauce on the table than mixing temperatures like that. The best item we ordered was the beef brisket: tender and flavorful. Full rack pork ribs are dry rub smoked and chewy (rib tips were the best bites). The pulled pork tasted good but was pretty dry. Sides are generous portions. Cornbread was good, baked beans had two kinds of beans and some meat bits and very smoky. Slaw, Mac-n-Cheese, and potato salad were filling but bland. We had leftovers and took it home for a second meal. If I went back, I'd get a brisket or pork sandwich and skip the rest. read more

I had my first dining experience here when they opened last year. Thought it was some solid BBQ. The brisket is awesome. Best item on the menu in my opinion. This past weekend I had the ribs for the first time (bc they ran out of brisket which is common) and they were solid too. I like the ribs best with the tangy BBQ sauce. Also I had the beans side for the first time.... mind-blowing delicious! I've never had tastier beans. The chef, Leo, gave us a sample of the salmon last weekend. Really really good!!! Not the cheap salmon either and it was very moist and flavorful. I'm ordering it the next time I visit. Don't have time to dine in? Service is quick. Take your lunch or dinner to go. And the bathrooms are always spotless. (Minor detail but it is remarkably clean) They started offering desserts. I had the black Forrest cake which I believe was made by No Coast. So if a highly rated butcher shop opened a restaurant specializing in meat, you'd go wouldn't you? I mean, it has to be good, right? That is the Butcher's Smokehouse. Right next to the Butcher's Block there is a fabulous new find that takes the high quality meats that the Butcher's Block already has, and they smoke them and serve them. As for the details, my wife and I visited on a Thursday night. There were a few diners as word is starting to get out, but it's a soft open, so limited menu and they are still working on some things. But they have mastered the meats. I had the brisket sandwich. The brisket was piled high, thick cut and super tender. They left just the right amount of fat in it too. Very moist. It stands on its own, but there are sauces too if you like your BBQ with sauce. I tried two of the 4 barbecue sauce options. They offer a traditional, a sweet and tangy, and a couple of Carolina style sauces- mustard based and vinegar based I think... I didn't try them this time but next time I will for sure. So far, the sweet and tangy is the winner. Be sure to get that. They also sell this on bottled in case you want to bring it home for your own barbecue. My wife got the pulled pork sandwich. Also piled high, moist and tender. She also agreed that the sweet and tangy was the way to go. So far they have just ribs, chicken salad, brisket and pulled pork on the menu. As for sides, cole slaw, greens, cornbread, and a couple of other choices. Drinks so far were just bottled Coke products, lemonade and tea. And if you'd like dessert, they do a brownie sundae and a root beer float. We saw both, but didn't partake tonight. The float is made with Sprecher's Root Beer, so I already have a good vibe about it. Prices are reasonable. A sandwich, side and soft drink will hit in the $10-$12 range, or you can order meats by the half pound. The manager indicated that over the coming weeks they will add other meat choices to the menu- but again, with the reputation that the Butcher Block has (4.5 Yelp stars) whatever they cook has to be good. My experience shows that they know how to cook it. So this will be a winner for sure. The seating is limited, so I can see in the future, that coming at a peak time there may not be anywhere to sit. I tried a half slab of their St. Louis ribs and I liked it very much. The ribs were covered with a light non-spicy rub that created a good thin bark. I usually like ribs smoked more so I can taste it (not too much) in the meat. The ribs here were not like that but they were still very good and tasty. This is BBQ for someone who has never had real BBQ. The menu tastes like an endorsement for Liquid-Smoke. If you love low-rent BBQ sauce, reminiscent of a discount grocery store, slapped on fatty cuts of over-cooked meat and mixed with 17 gallons of Liquid-Smoke to fake the flavor, then this place is for you! This little spot was not quite what I expected. If you were in the uber elegant restaurant which was here previously, set aside your expectations. This is go up to the counter to order casual. Food comes on a plastic tray with plastic utensils. Just know and do not be worried, then you will find it has excellent meats. Their baked beans are some of the best, perhaps the best I ever had. So smokey and rich in meat. The other sides will probably not win awards but they are good solid options and compliment the smoked meats well, macaroni with a personal twist, cole slaw. As someone who enjoys good BBQ, the reviews made me think this would be a nice local option. Ugh what a disappointment. My friend asked for a recommendation between a pulled pork or brisket sandwich. The cashier recommended brisket. But the meat wasn't well cooked and had tons of large chunks of fat. None of it was trimmed off. Made that meal inedible. He did like the cole slaw. The "sorry" response to inedible food by the staff was the extent of the assistance -- no offer to try something else or a dessert to make up for it. I tried the ribs (dry as if they had been cooked some time ago and sat around) and the chicken salad (ok but also a little dry). Eh, that's about it..just kind of eh. The family came for dinner and although we didn't leave hungry, we left disappointed. Rack of ribs were decent, although there was only one of the four bbq sauces that we cared for. Next best was the cornbread, too bad when we asked for some honey we were told they didn't provide nor sell honey. The "daily special" of chicken wings were sad and cold, not even an attempt was made to heat or reheat them. Potato salad was also disappointing, just kind of bland with undercooked potatoes. Pretty good brisket sandwich, and the side of Mac and cheese was creamy and peppery. Overall, I'm satisfied with my meal, and I'll be happy to come back and try a different sauce and side. I got a side of Mac & cheese, very good not box, you can tell it was homemade, I also go to taste test their baked beans they were awesome, smokey and a bit hotness to it, not alot, just a touch, they were good, best i have ever tried and i'm not a big fan of Bake beans. ask for a sample to try. I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience at The Butcher's Block Smokehouse. The menu wasn't too big but there were four different meats offered, one being salmon, so there was a nice variety. I really, really loved their pulled pork. I'm not a huge meat eater, but this pulled pork was honestly prepared perfectly. There were choices of sauces so it was up to you to decide how saucy or not saucy you wanted your meal to be. I of course love extra dripping sauce on mine and I received extra sauce on the house. This was the best smoked meat I have ever had and I am old and very picky. The meat was juicy, and had a nice kick, and what's this? A wonderful smoky taste. Imagine, smoked meat with a real smoked flavor. I had a pulled pork sandwich, and didn't put any sauce on it, didn't want to drip it all over my car. Wow. Best bbq I've had since eating at Dyer's in Amarillo. Brisket was great. Ribs were delicious. The cornbread was some of the best I've ever had. The potato salad could have been a bit better, but you don't eat bbq for the sides. Highly recommend. Will be coming back for the smoked chicken. If you like sweet, as in high fructose corn syrup in ketchup, you'll genuinely like the food here. The beans are very sweet (you can feel the sugar). The corn bread is basically dessert cake with a hint of yellow corn meal. The potato salad is mostly mustard and mayo, with some mysterious substrate that is ostensibly potato. The barbecue sauce tastes high in corn syrup. The meat - beef and pork - is tender and tasty. So, depending on what you like, you might really like the food here, or you might want to throw away most of it like we did. read more

Man, I REALLY wanted to have a good BBQ place, but I have to say it was a major disappointment. Although I'm from the Midwest originally, I spent over 10 years in Texas. I sampled many bbq places while in TX so I hope to have a good understanding about authentic barbecue. This place failed in nearly all areas that we sampled. My buddy and I each got the brisket sandwich. We got different sides to sample them- I got macaroni and cheese and cole slaw while he got the greens. First off the brisket wasn't good at all. It was tough, chewy and definitely more fatty than desired. There were occasional bites that were decently tender and OK but overall the flavor was average at best. Combined with the sinewy and fatty meat I would give the brisket a 2 out of 5. I think the bun was buttered and grilled but it was hard in several places and only added to the overall disappointment. Now to the sides: The macaroni and cheese was basically dry. the crumbly part on top was tough and very hard to eat in places- not recommended. The coleslaw was probably the best thing we had- creamy with a little bit of vinegar and a good amount of black pepper which I appreciated. It was pretty soggy at the bottom which I don't like. I like mine more on the dry side so I only ate about a third of it. The greens were just OK- my buddy ate a little bit and then finally concluded that he didn't like the flavor of those either. Finally the lemonade that I ordered was very bad. Basically undrinkable. I suspect it must've been the water they used because it tasted like dirt honestly. So I would think It might have been well water or some kind of iron taste in the water. I had two or three sips because I was thirsty but it was truly awful. Overall I had to give a one rating. I'm really sorry about that. It is just my honest opinion. I know it was rated at 4 1/2 stars and I was excited about the potential. I don't see any reason to come back again and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody for a good choice for barbecue. read more
