Kip did a fantastic job. He was friendly and accommodating, gave a great recommendation and made a delicious gimlet. All this while serving up the crab-remoulade on fried green tomatoes that could have been a meal on its own and absolutely delicious. Had a cup of thick and tasty seafood soup before my sous vide fried chicken with herbs and spices that was one of the best versions of fried chicken I've ever had. This place was dead on a Sunday afternoon so I'm somewhat surprised it's making it. The location is odd and not really near anything else in Bloomington so I have my doubts it will survive, but it definitely has potential. The decor is fun. Very aesthetically pleasing and cute spot for brunch. Our food was pretty mediocre and way too salty, plus for a place that's billed as a steakhouse, they claimed they did not have any steak sauce for the table. I'm not sure I believe that. My Nashville hot chicken sandwich was nothing like Nashville hot chicken. It wasn't bad, but the sauce wasn't hot and completely missed the mark on the correct flavor for that style of chicken. We had a great server, just overall this place isn't really anything exciting so I definitely don't think we'll be back, especially with all the different cuisines that B-town has to offer. read more

Made a reservation for brunch and they were super understaffed. Hostess at the front did let us know this so that was good! I get the service being a little slower when it's understaffed so no worries there, however what was really interesting was the food, at least my dish. Southern Stone has definitely improved since my last few visits--the service was better, and the refreshed decor made for a nicer atmosphere. My favorite dish was the Cajun Crab Fried Green Tomatoes topped. However, I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, and it had zero spice(didn't have any sauce/rubs), which made it pretty underwhelming. I asked for a side of Sriracha mayo, which helped. One of the other meals we ordered was also completely incorrect, which was disappointing. And just a heads-up--their margaritas are served in martini glasses, which is... an interesting choice. The food was pretty decent overall, but for the price point, I'd personally choose somewhere like Uptown instead. Not a bad experience by any means, just think there are better options in Bloomington! read more

Positive observations: * The food was great. The Jambalaya was well thought-out, with a nice blend of flavors and a killer portion size. Very nice. * The ambiance: This is a physically large restaurant, and I imagine it would take a lot to fill it up. I like not having to compete for a table. Opportunity for improvement: * This seemed to be one of those places where one server is expected to cover about 50 tables simultaneously. This poor guy was spread thinner than a layer of varnish, and that translated into slow drink refills and a much longer-than-expected dining experience. Ordered the tomahawk pork chop and it was completely unseasoned; not even a trace of salt or pepper and it was served with a different side than what was listed. Went back again for brunch and ordered the huevos rancheros- it was supposed to have shredded pork, but what I got was a soggy tortilla with eggs, onion & tomato (not listed in the description) and a brown sauce. When I talked to the waiter he insisted the meat was in the sauce and that it was ground beef. Which is not what the menu listed.... Staff was kind, and I truly want to see this restaurant succeed, but after multiple disappointing visits, it's hard to justify coming back. read more

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. Our server Julian was taking shots at the bar while we were waiting for service. He was argumentative when he mixed up our drinks. He took our orders with his back to us standing at the POS. When the checks arrived we paid in cash. 20% gratuity was already added to the bill and then proceeded to not bring us any change. We had to go up to the bar to have someone flag him down to get change. Julian was no where to be found and had another server bring us change that was still an incorrect amount. No apologies were offered. It's clear the employees of this restaurant do not care about customer service since they are guaranteed a 20% tip. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. read more

Wonderful waiter. I felt bad for him as he was so attentive and professional. It was a super slow Sunday evening, maybe it was cooks night off. With exception of my salmon sandwich which was excellent, food was pretty mediocre. Tomato soup was gloppy and like out of a can. Salad was a few handfuls of bag lettuce with hard cherry tomatoes. This is a place you want to like. Very nice environment friendly staff. But.... the food was just not up to my standards. I had the shrimp po-boy. The shrimp were fried to hard. They had a thick breading over small shrimp. They actually tasted like frozen precooked fried shrimp( like something i would get from a fast food place). Not the right bread for a po-boy. I give the sandwich a 1/5. My husband had the fried chicken. Bland with no seasoning. It was very tender and i wanted to like it but after takeing a few bites i also pushed that aside. read more

We had an open table reservation and when we arrived we were informed they do not honor open table reservation. This is despite a link from their own website to open table reservation the 'front of house manager' was probably the rudest individual I have ever encountered at a restaurant. I would have possibly understood the mishap if I was treated with respect and politely. Not the case. I feel compelled to warn others. Do not go here if you want to actually get seated. read more

I eat here occasionally and have always enjoyed it, but after a year's absence I went for brunch today. It was pretty empty on a Saturday but still took ages to get our food. Even our water, promised early on, had to be prompted to be delivered. I had eggs Benedict and it was pretty bad--both butter and tomatoes (why?) on the English muffins, which were therefore very soggy to start, with HARD poached eggs on top--a first for me. A mound of congealed hash browns didn't help. No salt or pepper on the table or offered. I only ate a couple of bites, but the waitress never asked if anything was wrong or even how we liked our meal. My wife's soup and salad were very good once delivered. So we were generally disappointed and will likely let another year or longer pass before trying it again. read more

We stopped in following a football game and beat the rush. We were seated right away and our drink orders were placed. Our server, Amanda, was busting her tail waiting tables, answering the phone, and tending bar. ( we only saw one other wait staff person). My martini was great, BTW! My small Caesar salad came out quickly. ( anchovies not available). It was fresh and crisp, and... with halved cherry tomatoes? Tasty, but unexpected. Hubby had the salmon with rice and asparagus and he was happy. I ordered the gumbo and asked for some bread on the side. Our entrees came out very fast - only about half done with my salad. My gumbo was in a large bowl and had some toasted baguette slices on the side. A nice touch. The roux was nice and dark. The chef has a heavy hand with the Cajun spices. What made this bowl sad was the lack of protein. I couldn't find any chicken, sausage or shrimp. The only solids I found were bell pepper. I did see another bowl come out as we were leaving, and didn't see visible protein either. I found a picture someone else posted on a different day- and their gumbo was loaded. During the Little 500 in Bloomington, Indiana, a loved one and I both stepped into this restaurant called Southern Stone. Upon entering the store, we were greeting by this nice city-esque ambiance. We sat down, and we were served by the servers. The servers were nice and all in all chill people. They looked like they enjoyed their jobs. In all fairness, it was a Sunday, so the restaurant was not busy when the both of us arrived. Looking at the menu, the food was a bit pricey. Despite the expensive menu, we ordered and ate food here. We ordered cornbread for appetizers, and the cornbread is honestly something worth dying for. The cornbread by itself is good. When you spread butter on top of the cornbread? This restaurant will have you wanting more. If you want good cornbread, this is the place to come to. The next thing I had was the Chimchurri Ribeye with a side of smokey Mac n cheese and coslaw. To start with the sides, the smokey mac n cheese was absolutely delicious. The creaminess of the cheese mixed with the right amount of salt left a lingering taste in my tongue even after I left the restaurant. Please order this as a side if you go here. The creaminess of the Mac n cheese carried this side. As for the coslaw? I was disappointed. There is not much to say about the coslaw. The coslaw was bland and tasteless. The Chimchurri Ribeye was good. The meat is decorated with a bunch of seasonings and it is satisfying to look at. The meat had a decent amount of salt but I would not say that the salt was enough to satisfy me. Everybody experiences differ, but this was my experience. I do have a bit of a gripe about the wait times between food. The staff took a while to bring our meals to us- which was strange considering the fact that there was little to almost nobody in the restaurant. Do what you will with that information. As for whether or not I would come back here again? Yeah. I only tried a little bit of their menu, but I am open to coming back and trying out more of what they have on their menu. This is a good place to sit down and have a Sunday dinner with a friend, colleague, or whoever. Just make sure that you have the budget before coming down to this restaurant. read more

Arrived at the restaurant and discovered a paper sign on the door the informed us the restaurant was closed today. Emergencies happen, but it seems as though canceling day-of reservations would be appropriate. read more

This place is just ok. First, the positives. It's nice inside. The wait staff are nice and friendly. They have a good drink selection. And the menu has lots of variety to it. The chicken/sausage eggroll (app) was the best thing we ate... a bit pricey for what you get, but yummy. The chicken fried steak was . Unfortunately, I have some negatives too. More than half of what we ordered came out cold. I sent my sweet potato fries back once... when they came back, they were better, but not great. None of the regular fries we ordered came out even warm. On top of all this, the service was really slow. I don't think they have enough servers to keep up with how many tables they can seat (there's a lot of tables inside, more than you'd expect). I'd be tempted to go back, because the menu is expansive. But maybe I'll just get it to go...so I can bring it home to reheat it, and I don't have to wait 20 minutes to place my order. read more

My dad and I decided to go out to lunch on a Saturday, checked out what restaurants offered dine-in and away we went. We had every intention of going to another restaurant only to find our original plan next door to Southern Stone. Upon arriving, the environment was clean, Covid restriction friendly, and inviting.  We looked at a menu and decided to scratch our original plan and try Southern Stone. The menu is a graphic one scans on their smartphone to view. The menu had lots of offerings though I found their Smartphone accessible menu not easy to navigate.  I found the poor waiter waiting on me to open the right page to make choices. Luckily, we were there for an early lunch and there was only 1 other table at the time. My dad ordered pinot noir and I ordered an unsweet ice tea. That ice tea was very good! It definitely had some floral notes; light and refreshing. We ordered fried pickles as an apetizer - so hot. They obviously came out fresh! The seasoning was good, perfect balance of salty and sour. My dad ordered a burger with their fries. He ordered his burger well done but he didn't mention it until consuming it. He said it had good flavors! I ordered the Club - oh my! So so good; thick bacon, actual ham (not processed!), turkey, lettuce, pesto mayo and cheddar cheese. I also ordered the sweet potato waffle fries. The portions are big! Enough to take some home as we took half of the club sandwich home.   Overall - the food was wonderful! I would definitely go back. My only suggestion is that the Smartphone menu is improved and easier to navigate. read more

A group of my sorority sisters planned a sisterly relations activity and met at Southern Stone for breakfast. Eight of us met. We were warmly welcomed and our table was ready, reservations had Ben made. We learned that the owners, staff and menu are primarily the same from Sweet Grass. I ordered shrimp and grits. Flavor was good although the grit were a little dry. The Gouda grits, as a side dish were tasty but slightly dry. Another sister ordered scrambled eggs with grilled veggies and potatoes, she really enjoyed then. One sister ordered a lemonade mimosa , it was a beautiful blue and she reported it was very good! Service was fine. I went in for a late lunch, so there weren't many other customers. One server covered them all. Was not impressed with the food. Had the fried alligator bites for an app, which came out tasting burnt while the meat itself was pink. Only ate a few before the burnt flavor became overwhelming. (Also needed a more thoughtful dipping sauce than an Asian sweet chili sauce; shouldn't be hard for a southern-themed restaurant.) The crayfish étouffée was bland. (And the bread was served with refrigerated butter packet that was too cold to spread.) If you're paying as much as what they charge, the food needs to be better. read more

I have to say, we have never been disappointed when dining here (short of being able to get a table on a busy evening). Breakfast/Brunch is fantastic. This review however is about my most recent visit on 4/8/22 while dining at the bar. My beautiful bride (of 28 years tomorrow) and I always prefer to dine at the bar. The restaurant was busy, but seating at the bar was pretty open. The draft beer selection is somewhat limited, although well thought out and selected. I opted for the shiitake mushroom smash burger and fries, and was not disappointed. The burger was perfectly seasoned and prepared, and the mushroom, Swiss combination was fantastic on a nicely toasted potato bun. My wife was the beneficiary of what may be one of the best sandwiches Bloomington has the offer (this is my official nomination). The Flying Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich was a special item, and I am hopeful that it becomes a regular offering. The chicken was perfectly breaded, and seasoned. The chicken was presented in a perfectly toasted bun along with hand carved smoked ham, pineapple and cheese. Seriously, this is something that we lucked into ordering and would now return frequently to enjoy. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS SANDWICH. Kudos Southern Stone. Got takeout, and was surprised at how bad the order was. Crab Cakes were large but not very tasty and expensive ($30). Beignets came without powdered sugar. Ordered a large okra and another side okra but was given only the small side that came with the entree. Ordered a plain burger for my 5-yr old kiddo and got a cheeseburger (which, if folks with kids know, getting that versus what was ordered is the end of the world). Also, their website menu is not close to reflective of their actual menu. All that and a few other dishes and desserts cost $135. Would not recommend. read more
