Horrible!! I came here bc my brother invited me and said it was a great restaurant but it was bought out and under new ownership. Vibe was off as soon as we walked in but decided to give it a go anyway. Btw around 6pm on a Friday. Only one server who seemed new and was doing everything by herself. We then decided to order and the first she said was "oh we are out of this and we are out of that." Flag! Not busy at all as a matter of fact only a couple of people inside and 2 at the bar. Then when I ordered pollo guisado she said "oh I'm sorry we are out of that too.." I said ok bistec then and my brother ordered the same with the rice n beans and a side order of tostones.. everything was bland rice, beans, and especially the bistec. No flavor whatsoever. And the Bistec although bland tasted like it was old and had a weird taste to it. My brother agreed. Simply horrible! The only 2 things that were good was the tostones and the parcha juice! That was it definitely NOT worth the money at all. If you go again expecting how it used to be well prepare to be disappointed to say the least. You will see. Sad. read more

The mofongo with shrimp was incredible -- perfectly seasoned, crispy on the outside, soft inside, and packed with garlic flavor. The shrimp were juicy, fresh, and cooked just right. Every bite tasted homemade and authentic. Definitely one of the best mofongo dishes I've had. The portion size was generous, and the sauce tied everything together perfectly without overpowering the dish. You can tell real care went into the preparation and presentation. I'd absolutely come back for this again and recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Puerto Rican food. read more

Extremely disappointed. The mofongo was very dry, I had to cut it with a knife! The lobster was not fresh. Everyone knows that seafood should always be served fresh. Good service and good food. Don't let the disposable cutlery and plates fool you, from the empanadas to the mofongo and tostones the food was delicious. This is typical fare so they use iceberg lettuce for salads with simple lemon and oil dressing. The chuleta was well seasoned and prepared. The shrimp al ajillo with mofongo was great. My boyfriend took me here after getting a tip that this place has the best mofongo in town. While we have only had mofongo one other time before this, it has already become one of our favorites! We also ordered beef empanadas and onion rings to accompany our meal. Unfortunately, the kitchen was out of onion rings so I had to opt for the tostones. The empanadas came out first and one order came with two patties! We were served chicken instead of the beef we had ordered. Not a big deal, we didn't even bother telling our server. Frankly, the empanadas were a bit dry and I wished they came with a dipping sauce other than the store bought tomatillo and Frank's Red Hot the table. The tostones on the other hand, were amazing and came with a ketchup/mayo sauce! Next came our much anticipated mofongo. I had ordered the fried pork mofongo since other Yelpers had said the pork here was good and my boyfriend went with the garlic shrimp. I'd suggest going with the garlic shrimp because the fried pork was very dry, even with the sauce that it came with it. Even so, my boyfriend and I both agreed that we didn't like the mofongo here as much as where we first had it. Although Mambo is a restaurant, it definitely has a club feel to it. With numerous drink specials written on blackboards throughout the restaurant, I'm sure weekends here are a blast. I can't wait to come back here for more tostones and dancing! read more

FINALLY Caribbean food that reminds me of my mother's cooking. Authentic Dominican food which takes 20-30minutes to prepare (trust me when I say it's worth the wait). Last night, my boyfriend friend and I got hungry during the Agalloch show so we ventured into the cool fall breeze to seek out this place. It appears to be a bar at first, with a few tables in the back, but the bartender told us to sit wherever we wanted if we came to eat. DO NOT COME HERE FOR AMBIANCE: It's a divy-bar styled place. Sandals decorate the walls. The atmosphere is nice though. In spite of it's looks, families come here, and the service is friendly. The sounds of bachata and salsa fill the air, as does the smell of the delicious food I'm about to describe: Tostones are the biggest I've ever seen. I know if your eyes scanned that, it looks like a perverted joke, but it's not. Tostones are fried green (not ripened) plantains. I ordered beef stew (Carne de rés guisada) with a side of yellow rice. The rice comes with a helping of beans flavored with onions and possibly cilantro. I was able to symmetrically part the meal in two and have enough for a second dinner. I hope that gives you an idea of the portion size. Im going to start by givibg it 4 stars just because i found my beef just a bit too salty. I got the bistec al caballo i think it was call with tostones and it also comes with 2 fried eggs on top. As appetizers we got the beef empanadas but they gaves us chicken instead the waitress came and apologized and brought us also the beef they were both very very good. I first heard about "Mofongo" on an episode of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives". It looked and sounded interesting. Well, they have it at Mambo (See pics) and as much as it pains me to say this, I have to- I wasn't impressed. It wasn't bad but it really seems like a whole lot of work and ingredients for something that didn't have all that much flavor. I mean, I've never had it before so I have no idea if it was the preparation or the idea. Luckily the garlic shrimp that accompanied it was delicious! Also, the fried sweet plantains were amazing as well. Home cooking from the Caribbean! Have been coming here a few times a year when I am missing the Puerto Rican food I grew up with in Hartford. Everything is exactly like my friends moms's cooking. They have recently doubled in size and moved next door but the prices are still unbelievably low. You can eat inside or out overlooking the Thames River. I like Mambo because of the good environment. It has a very friendly space and good customer service. Also, it has very fun latino parties during the weekends at night. However, they ask you to pay some money for using one of their tables. One of my friends was asked to buy a 85$ liquor, before he could take a table, but he was lucky to find an empty table because the other tables looked reserved. What brings us into new restaurants we've not yet tried is scratch cooking and they certainly lived up to that! Had so many great choices but decided on their short rib with some clam chowder. The chowder was very special and the short rib and Mac & cheese loaded with flavor. Had they made noodles from scratch it would be over the top. My wife chose scallop tacos and loved them.
