We were so excited to happen upon a Mexican resteraunt, because it is always our 1st choice, but the food was Meh. As a resteraunt, the downstairs was very small with 3 tables & a bar; the upstairs was more spacious. The food was edible, but it wasnt anything special; nothing a novice cook at home couldnt produce taste-wise, & you would have never known you were in a Mexican resteraunt by the food, the ambiance, or the drinks (which is hard to do because margaritas are made of tequila) Granted what we ordered wasn't Mexican, but isn't that strange in itself? I ordered one of the specials: ($27) boneless beef short ribs w/ a mescal mushroom sauce, on a bed of mashed potatoes & spinach w/ pickled onions, & a ginger margarita ($14). My friend chose the special ($26) coconut crusted cod w/ rice, mixed vegetables, pineapple salsa & a house silver margarita (16). Mine was edible & the meat was a good texture, but the flavor profile was nothing to write home about. Actually, it would have have been better without the sauce, because it overpowered the dish. The pickled onion on top was the best part of my meal. The drink also fell flat, but was drinkable. My friend reported that her fish was bland & flavorless, but could have been improved with a little lime. However the waitress never came back after taking the order, except to drop the check. It was delivered by a runner. She commented that everything else on the plate had flavor & as long as she ate bites of everything together, it was decent. I gave it a try, & agreed, but I have to say the pineapple salsa was a stand out star on her plate. Her drink was also passable, but not good enough to order a second & she had to add sweetner, because it was mutually bitter & tart. She said the sweetner improved it. I had never heard of Milagro until I was at Stonington Vineyard and trying to find a place for dinner. Our usual haunts were all booked up and someone said "you should try Milagro's!" And they had room for our table of six and OMG, every single moment of our early evening was perfect. I had the vanilla thyme margarita which I loved! Our table had a strawberry margarita, Margo margarita which Vic said "was slay", a spicy original margarita and the fresh margarita. Everyone loved their choices. Look chips for a Mexican restaurant are always up for judgement and these were perfect. We had the guacamole and the 3 salsas. All of it was delicious. Those chips were so good! For dinner my husband was sad because he loves chimichanga's and they aren't "on the menu" but he asked ... do you have a chimichanga? And they do! beef and chicken! He loved it. I and my daughter had the fish tacos and, seriously, look through my reviews. I'm very tough on fish tacos and I swear... best. Fish. Tacos. Ever. No lie. No exaggeration. Let me say it again, Best. Great: quaint, amazing fresh margaritas, and quality tortilla chips and guacamole. The tuna ceviche was tasty and unique but the serving size was for a child. Bad: The server didn't write down our order and brought out the wrong margaritas (plus she served them in a tiny little glass unlike everyone else's big wide glasses). She was verbally annoyed and said she'd fix it. We waited another 6 or 7 minutes and she wasn't resolving the issue so I asked her kindly what we should do. We had been dining with them many times over the years so we were confused by her behavior. She snapped at us and 5 minutes later brought us back the little glasses again with the correct rim flavor that we originally ask for. She never did apologise and simply dumped in the watered-down liquid in the correct glasses and set it on the table. I asked her why it was brought out that way and she said because I had a couple of sips and walked away. On so many levels, this was unprofessional. When she made the mistake, she should've apologised and had the Bartender make fresh new ones for us in the correct glasses, but that did not occur. I ordered one hot soup for my entrée and asked that it be very very hot in temperature. I had this one request and if it was not hot, I will not send it back, but will simply ask for a to go box. About 15 minutes later she delivered it to me and there were a few little pieces of chicken in the tortilla soup and it was lukewarm at Best. I pushed it to the side and about 10 minutes she came over to take our plates and never even asked if we liked anything. I kindly asked for a to go container for the soup because it was lukewarm. She then grabbed it and said "I will show the Kitchen how much you did not like this". Again, I never asked her to take it. I wasn't even complaining. But again, she never apologised or felt bad whatsoever. On top of that, my husband ordered a pan seared fish dish and it was disgusting. It looked like the fish came out of a frozen bag from 7-11. For the side dish, it looked like they put a little bit of tomato sauce on some white rice and added a dollop of stringy Julian vegetables. He took one bite and decided I could embellish it at home. It does not matter that it was during the holidays because this experience was so bad that we will probably never go back. There are many more wonderful restaurants in Stonington and she obviously could care less or was too tired to care. Our dinner bill was exorbitant and not worth it. We had a nice time at Milagro's on Sunday. Cozy modern American Mexican atmosphere with a bar/lounge area on the first floor and more dining tables on the second floor. The menu online was more descriptive and offered pictures compared to the lackluster menu in person. Parking could be challenging especially during busier times. We went during a rain storm and lucked out with a spot on the street right out front. Service was attentitive and gracious, however we got a dumbfound look when we entered and didn't know where to sit as we didn't really know the options as it was our first time there. The food the kitchen put out was pretty good. It was Mexican with a modern flair. We had the chips and salsa which came with some freshly made chips with 3 different salsa's to try. We also tried the cauliflower tacos appetizers which were deep fried on a small double tortilla with some guacamole and chopped onions and tomatoes. It was very tasty and sufficient for a appetizer. For my meal I had the Baja Fish Tacos, which were delicious. The fish tasted fresh and was crispy. The tacos had a mayo-style shredded slaw on them, which I didn't think I would like but was actually pretty good. It was served with a scoop of Mexican rice. My date had the Enchiladas al Horno as a vegetarian option. It was a lasagna style enchilada with a couple of layers with lots of onions, mushroom, and spinach. She wasn't really a fan of the amount of onions though. For dessert, we had the Apple Churro Bites which were yummy little morsels of a molten liquid apple filling in some dough with a fantastic carmel dipping sauce. We also had the Dulce De Leches Tres Leches Cake, which I'd skip next time. It was kinda dry and not so fresh. Now that I think of it the Churro Bites dipping sauce was probably the Dulce De Leche for the cake, though it was on Churro Bites plate. Hmmm. All in all, Milagro Cafe was pretty good and I wouldn't hestitate to give them another if I were in the area. read more

I have been to this place twice while docking a boat at Stonington. The staff were friendly both times. They were very accommodating to our party of 10. The restaurant remained fairly empty for some reason. Our waitress was very kind and brought us a second serving of chips after we asked. She was also able to split our checks and did not mess up any of our orders. As for the food, I ordered the chicken tacos and they allowed me to customize what I ordered. The chicken itself wasn't all that good (in my opinion) but the restaurant overall was solid. You can also ask for nachos and they will serve you a large bowl of chips beans and other things. read more

This place is a wonderful spot to come to in Stonington. The environment was quiet when I came in, I can see that even if it gets more crowded it'll still be a comfortable environment. They put my group of 10 upstairs and they even offered to do separate checks which is extremely rare for a restaurant. The staff was so kind and accommodating. This is a real deal Mexican restaurant, especially the menu. So much so everything is in Spanish. Below I will provide a English food menu. I personally ordered the Carne Asada Tacos, the staff was really accommodating and put cheese on the tacos and gave me a double order of rice on the side. It was so scrumptious and was a perfect portion, especially for the price. The only hiccup is was they put in the wrong order and brought us the wrong food -- they put in the correct order and comped a dinner. Man oh man where do I begin. Me and my crew were starving and some had scurvy from a week of sailing. Close to a mutiny we had to eat to settle the storm down below. We decided on this place last year and once again we went here as everything else is booked. Our waitress spilt the check TEN ways even splitting the chips and salsa for the table between us all. She refilled our drinks for free and same with chips it is some supreme service. With the Mexican music in the background scurvy was no more, we were ready for hibernation. The food was huge and so good for such a cheap price. Everything was great even the bathrooms where I opened the bomb doors and unleashed never before seen destruction upon the water. Best Mexican restaurant we've ever had, period! This cute little modern Mexican gem in Stonington was an absolute delight. We chose to sit upstairs and started with fresh Margheritas. We had the chips and 3 types of salsas as an appetizer and couldnt stop talking about the flavors and the chips themselves. All were amazing but the medium was our favorite. We had the mole enchiladas and Chile relleno for our meals. Both were amazing and every bite was delicious. Highly recommend both! For dessert we had the Mexican bread pudding and flan. Sooooo good!! We had an amazing meal at Milagro this past Saturday. We ordered take out and had a picnic by the ocean and it was perfect! The food was hot and fresh! This is my first time in this marvelous palace called milagro café. The people inside were so welcoming and the waiter was such a kind person. I got the chicken taco. It was pretty good but the chicken was not right up my alley. But most things go up my alley. Another thing to add. The inside was a perfect Mexican restaurant. Reminds me of Taco Bell. Visibly but also through my bum. It took less than 30 minutes for all hell break and come loose through my bum. But overall, this place is pretty legit. Great menu and service! Definitely a bit pricey, especially for the portion sizes, but we are in the boroughs.. I got the salmon tacos, which were delicious. $20 in my opinion was a lot for 3 small tacos (though the salmon portions were good!), might have been nice to have a little side of rice or black beans, etc. All of us really enjoyed our meals! This was my first time visiting Milagro Café and I had a great experience. We got chicken burritos (because we heard so much about them from friends) and house made margaritas, both of which were excellent and quite affordable for the quantity and quality. The red sauce covering the burrito tasted really good, it seemed to be a tomato based sauce that was not spicy but very flavorful. The chicken and rice in the burrito were well seasoned and paired well with the sauces on the dish. The portion was massive so I ended up taking half of the burrito home (and it made an excellent lunch the next day!). I look forward to returning and trying more of the menu! read more

I had high hopes from reading other reviews but the delivery, at least, was quite disappointing. We had two orders of carne asada soft tacos and one of enchiladas verdes. We added guacamole and chips. Let's start there. The guac was pablum - not a chunk of avocado to be seen. I lived in Texas for many years and traveled often to Mexico and never saw baby food guacamole. If it had tasted good, I would have given it a pass, but it was saturated with lime juice which definitely should have been added with a lighter hand. The chips were fresh and the best thing about the entire meal but they were rationing them tonight. There were too few to fully enjoy for three people. The entrees were interesting. The carne asada tacos were decent, not memorable, and came with a scoop of absolutely tasteless Spanish rice and a spoon of black beans. I liked the black beans, well seasoned and good with the supplemental chips we had to add to our table when we quickly ran out of theirs. The enchiladas had a decent sauce, tangy but not a nuanced sauce you get in a good Mexican restaurant. The chicken was very dry and again the little scoop of flavorless rice and good beans. I acknowledge that dining-in is often a different culinary experience than take-out but the price for our mediocre dinner does nothing to encourage me to try again, with take-out or dining -in. Great place for Mexican fare in Stonington. I had a house margarita and hubs had a smoky margarita - both fantastic and are enough reason to come here. We shared guacamole and chips - the chips weren't my favorite, bit on the thick side and bland. The Baja fish tacos however were amazing! Giant piece of fried fish in each, cooked perfectly. Was excited from the reviews but ended up being EXTREMELY disappointed.... everything went wrong with this place, all the way down to the water. To start we had 5 people and ordered 4 meals to share amongst us, we waited an hour and 20 mins for the food to come out (while THREE other tables came and left). When you think of authentic Mexican cuisine, you think flavorful and juicy. Every single meal we had was extremely dry and fatty. We all asked for sour cream just to eliminate the dryness. Now onto the water...... we all had a glass of water with lemon and the first cup was great but once we received a pitcher of water it tasted absolutely horrible, such a bad after taste!!!! First time back since the expansion of the restaurant. It's great that they have more capacity, with the upstairs room. The bar itself has suffered, though. It's smaller as far as the shelf space and it seems like they've cut the number of tequilas by half. The food is good, but there's room for improvement. The beans are a disappointment - bland, gummy, and totally forgettable. The rice is even worse. This is hard to understand, as rice and beans are such an important staple in this cuisine. On our latest visit we had the cochintas pibil, carnitas tacos, chips & guacamole, and drinks. The cochinitas was still the best thing we had, and I do recommend this. The carnitas was ok, as was the guacamole. Service is ok, despite some confusion about seating availability. Prices are high, although I guess this is due to location. Overall I think something was lost in the transition from "hole-in-the-wall" to a larger restaurant. Still good, but not better than it used to be. read more
