Mommy's has wonderful food! We are from out of state but walked in on a whim b/c we had seen it on Apple Maps & it sounded interesting. As soon as we walked in the door we took a deep breath & said, this smells like the Caribbean! The ladies were happy to give us samples of what we wanted to try, but we soon realized that we wanted a little bit of everything! The curry chicken & jerk chicken were both standouts. Goat stew was excellent, as was the legume (eggplant stew) & my husband almost inhaled the mac cheese! Peas (black beans) & rice, & a good portion of mixed steamed veg made it a meal. Mommy's portions are generous, we had enough left over for midnight snacks! We would happily come back. A rather sparse restaurant, if someone hadn't been there waiting on their food, I wouldn't have known how to order (at a tiny window near the drink cabinet). Mostly white walls, black furniture, and a couple paintings on the wall, you're not invited to enjoy a cozy meal, for sure. Evidenced by the fact that everything is served in a to-go fashion with plastic ware, if you do eat in you can ask for metal silverware. I was allowed to sample the proteins of the day, and while both the chicken stew and pork chop were tasty, I went with the pork chop, along with some cabbage and some black rice & peas. You won't find menus here, just a screen with today's food. Evidently you can also find them on Facebook if you want to know the menu before you go. All the employees are very nice, so that's a plus. I'll have to check it out another day when they have goat or ox tail available. As a tip, if you want the seafood boil on Saturday, you have to order it on Friday. read more

Not the best food imo - no chicken or goat curry so settled for some food I didnt want. Amazing service from the server but nothing from the cashier, who I am convinced was hiding under the table and magically emerged when I was walking over to pay. To-go containers were very messy, with 3 to 4 bitefuls of food trapped either between the container lids or in the plastic carryout bag. Soup was leaking before I got to the car, and was everywhere by the time I got home after carefully placing it on a towel in my back seat. Location was ok to pull into and out of. Not much ambiance. Driven by quite a few times and thought about stopping in. Today, I hung a left and decided to check it out. Note that the staff was friendly and very soft spoken. I looked up to see what was on the menus and unfortunately as I began to read it, it changed. The menu board kept changing so I had to ask what they had on the line. I ordered the chicken stew. I wasn't asked if I would be eating in or taking out and not offered any drinks. As I was leaving, I noticed that they had what looked like restaurant made lemonade that was bottled. Missed opportunity for a sale because I already paid and was on my way out the door. When I got home, I opened it up and began tasting my order. The vegetables side was nicely seasoned, more than the chicken stew, which was surprising. Definitely felt there was Too much rice for the 3 legs of chicken. I was glad that the young lady put some sauce on it. Now if you can see from my initial picture. The three legs were kind of laying up. As I dug in, I found that I would definitely Recommend asking for more stew sauce and then debone the chicken when you get home and put it in the sauce. The sauce was really good. The chicken needed to be dipped in it to give it that taste that I was looking for. I would pass on the rice next time and ask for extra helpings of chicken and veggies. Both of those were really yummy. Someone left a previous review about the cashier and that is still the case. Although he was nice and polite. It would be better for him to sit at one of the tables or get a taller chair so someone knows that he is there. Maybe add a light in the cashier area. Because I stopped in on a rainy afternoon and it was dark in the restaurant. Agree that it looks more like a cafeteria restaurant. Overall, I don't think I would visit again. Now if someone asks about Caribbean food, it seems you have two options within a mile of each other. Mommies or Saint Bess Jerk Hub. Both have attributes that would draw someone in but neither make you was to come back repeatedly. With a larger space, parking and outdoor seating, I hope the manager takes notes from these reviews to make the experience that each patron has a better one. Definitely opportunities are there to improve. Small but large return on the investment. Again not a horrible experience. Haitian food is very difficult to find for folks who don't live near the New York border. Mommy's Delicious Food fills that gap in the BEST way! I am Haitian American and brought my mom out to try the food and she LOVED it! We tried a few different items: white rice, sos pwa, oxtail, lalo, cabbage, and the Mac and cheese. All bomb. The owners spent time getting to know us and my mom even spoke with a few of the customers. It was nice to see so many Haitians in one place. My family and I were all over the moon, with both the food and the service. We all had something different, and were able to enjoy each other's dishes. I had the jerk chicken while my wife had the curry chicken and our daughter had the vegetable beef stew with beef. We all agreed that the vegetables were very much a highlight. The mixed vegetables of cabbage, green beans and carrots were something that we could have eaten all day long. That is not to undermine the proteins. The jerk chicken and curry chicken were so flavorful right down to the bone. First time trying this place, overall the food was good. The rice was a little dry to my liking but still edible, the plantains were completely dry and not edible. As for the chicken and veggies they were delicious. My oxtail was delicious and moist. And is probably a top favorite. The staff was not very welcoming, seemed rude and stand-offish but maybe it was just a bad day. My sister and I drove down to Norwich to try Mommy's Delicious Food after I had passed it when in the area earlier in week. Plenty of parking is available for this and the few other businesses in the small plaza. The restaurant itself appeared clean although the music was loud making conversation with the staff difficult. It is also rather hot in the restaurant which is fine because the food is counter service for eat-in at one of the many tables along the windows or take-out. There is also a patio area in the front of the restaurant that overlooks West Main Street. We ordered three meals. Two were curried chicken and the third was curried goat. Due to the aforementioned music volume, I had trouble hearing the women who took the orders and put them together but we managed to get all the sides and mains sorted. All three orders had rice and vegetables as sides. Once our food was packed, we paid at different counter. We brought the food back to my house, about 25 minutes from Mommy's. The food was still warm and we started eating. The portion of vegetables, which were tasty, was small, as was the portion of curried goat. The rice to goat ratio was completely lopsided. I ended up tossing a large portion of rice because I didn't have anymore meat to enjoy with it. The orders of curried chicken included a similar imbalance of meat to rice. There were basically two legs, no thighs, per order. Although all of the items we ordered tasted good, we probably won't return due to the distance to pickup for takeout and the lopsided portions. read more

Stopped in for lunch - 2 of us for a first visit - It was a Friday @ 1:30. First impression is what I call cafeteria restaurant - not really a true restaurant with waitstaff - but go up to counter and place order from large tv screen. Ok, fine... but it went downhill quickly from there. Small menu on a large screen that keeps changing images - VERY annoying! Then soft-spoken woman behind counter tells us that 2 out of 6 items they are out of... and the person that I was with wanted those. I had to repeat everything that she said to my friend because he couldn't hear her over the loud music. We walked out and went down the street to Old Tymes. This was my first time at Mommy's, but it certainly will not be my last! I walked in and was immediately greeted by the chef. She asked if this was my first time, and offered samples of today's dishes. On the menu today was goat stew, jerked chicken, curry chicken, beef stew, and turkey curry. I tried them all and was impressed with each and every one of them. I finally decided on the chicken curry which came with either white rice or rice and beans and vegetables. I opted for the white rice and vegetables and was delighted not only with the taste but also with the very generous portion of food. The chicken curry was flavorful, but not overwhelming.
