Almost got swindled by the owner today. Ordered nachos. Menu said $7.42... he charges me $8.78. Ordered taco salad. Menu said $5.68... he charges $5.75. Ordered a 60oz pitcher of beer. Menu said $14... he charges me $18. Ordered two 16oz of the same draft beer. Menu says $4 each. He charges me $10 total for the two beers. Did he assume i was drunk and wouldn't look at the receipt in detail? Here were his explanations in chronological order. 1. The new minimum wage will soon be higher so his prices went up. 2. Cost of meat is higher so his prices went up. 3. He just took over the business yesterday so he didn't have chance to update his menu. (Btw his picture is all over the wall, on this yelp review... yes the old man with white mustache... and his picture or a drawing of it is on all his napkin dispenser so i suspect he didn't just take over yesterday.) 4. His wife comes out from the kitchen and tries to tell me that the price on the receipt is with taxes even though it's clearly added on the bottom. 5. Pictures should validate my story. 6. He re-rang me but his prices still were higher than his menu. 7. Gave me some change to which I replied I want my exact according to what he advertised. Then he gives me a dollar bill and says "This should cover it" 8. He is overcharging about $8 so $1 would not "cover it." I would like to thank all my elementary math teachers. The wife and I was driving through Downey on our way back from dropping off a friend, and wanted somewhere good to eat. We pulled up Google Maps and found Mambo Grill with all its good reviews - they earned it! It was very busy, but the service was good. I got the carne asada Fiesta Nachos and my wife got the grilled chicken sandwich, seriously good stuff. Best chicken sandwich in town. It's actually called the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich or the #1. For a little variation ask for #1 "El Prieto Style". Owner and staff are always friendly. Hit up this place after a Yelp search and ended up in a little two-room Bar/Quick Grill with an interesting mix of menu items ranging from simple burgers and dogs to homestyle Mexican food! Our group of 6 tried everything from a French Dip (good, but not great- au jus could use more flavor) to a Carne Asada plate (large grilled super-thin steak with rice, beans and fresh avocado slices and tortillas) to a Cubano sandwich (very tasty and traditional). Homemade ciabatta-style thin bread for the grilled chicken sandwich was very nice. Chipotle sauce (for chipotle chicken) is nice and smokey and has some serious kick as does the salsa they serve on the side of the mexican dishes (extremely hot- be careful if you're not a "hot" person). Overall the food was pretty "homemade" feeling and good- and a good value too! Chatted with an older gentleman that I think was the owner and he was not only very friendly but gave us menu suggestions, checked to see that we liked everything and thanked us for coming in to give him a try. We told him we found him on Yelp and he said "I didn't even know I was on Yelp" and then smiled when we showed him the 4-star rating and explained to him that "4-stars on Yelp is a pretty good thing!" Amazingly, the prices were very reasonable for what you get. A sandwich combo with a drink and a handful of fries was under a ten-spot. I love this place!! When I first came to dine here they were transitioning and making adjustments from the previous owner so I understand the growing pains when it comes to transition. I came here for their Sunday brunch and was pleasantly surprised by their level of service. I think this place is being managed by a White haired gentleman that is always pleasant and nice to his customers. Service wise no problemo! On Saturday nights they have karaoke nights it makes for a fun night if you bring your friends since most of the line up singers are oldies but goodies. Sunday's make for a great brunch here, they don't have an extensive buffet selection but they do have all you can eat menudo/posole and unlimited mimosa's under $17. + tax! (Deal!) The mini alcoholic in me loves this! They bring you an ice bucket to keep your champagne bottle chilled and a glass of Orange juice. What's neat about this mimosa deal is they replenish your bottle as soon as you're out as part of the brunch. Pretty damn awesome if you ask me. The Mimosa Sunday brunch is worth it. Champagne Brunch review: We had a group of 12 lovely ladies for brunch and we all enjoyed it. It's a small brunch buffet, but it was enough. Fruit, breads, soups- albondigas and a delicious tortilla soup, chilaquiles, beans, rice, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and potatoes. You also get juice or soda or you can upgrade to unlimited champagne (we did). The service was great and a wonderful time was had by all. I saw the positive reviews on Yelp, so I decided to give Mambo Grill a try. I think I saw a sign there that said "the most authentic Mexican food" or something to that effect, which is a pretty big boast 'round these parts. I tried the Mambo Nachos, mostly because I was craving nachos. Besides, I figured it would offer an opportunity to try their beans, chips, beef, sour cream, and guac all in one shot. As for "authentic", I wasn't really convinced about that. Melted "nacho" cheese is far from authentic. However, I must say that the nachos were really delicious, and I ate the entire plate. The waitress assured me that the nachos came with carne asada. What I got instead was more of a slow-cooked beef. Don't get me wrong, the beef was tender and very tasty, but I felt a bit misled on this one. Carne asada is made from steak. Flank steak or similar, usually. The slow cooked beef was most certainly some type of roast. Big difference. Anyway, I have to admit that overall I enjoyed my meal, and would definitely stop by again sometime in the future (but I wouldn't go out of my way). Pretty tasty food, pleasant staff, good atmosphere and vibe. They also mentioned that they can make "anything" upon request, which is pretty unique. I might just take them up on that offer. Right off the bat it was the only thing open at the time. They have music and the bar side open at night it had a decent amount of people inside that area. I had to be patted down and Id'd to be let in. I ordered diablo shrimp plate. Came with chips that were twice fried. But hot. And a really nicely spiced salsa. And a potatoe noodle soup that was pretty good. The entree came with rice a small salad and an order of flour tortillas. The shrimp sauce was excellent. Great flavor and spice level. My mouth is on fire right now but it's worth it. The waitress was super nice and friendly. And brought me another order of tortillas. Definitely a great restaurant the food and staff are great! Came here for the morning unlimited food and champagne. It was about $17. The food was buffet style and as a vegetarian there wasn't many options but what they had was good enough. While reading the reviews, I was sold in bottomless mimosas and delicious food for $16.99. Reviews were right, food is delicious and there's bottomless mimosas. However, food was scarce and there was a lot of empty chafers during my visit. This is problematic when the amount of chafers is five. They do have some fruit, sweet bread, and two types of soup. I think it was pork posole and menudo (I didn't try them as I don't eat either of them). Overall, I felt cheated. Very nice staff though! read more

Long time Downey resident, first time trying out Mambo grill. I came in with my girlfriend to try a new spot for bottomless mimosas, as I had read good reviews about the food at this place. We came here 10 minutes before their brunch buffet was over but the hostess let us know not to worry, that they could definitely take care of us. The buffet/mimosas combo was $24.99. It included fresh made posole, jaiva, birria, rice and beans, fresh cut fruit, Mexican style conchitas, freshly made chilaquiles that they make on the spot for you to your taste, bacon, sausages and eggs for breakfast if you crave it. All tasted great, I was really impressed with this place, but wasnt surprised as many reviews you read about this place praise the quality of food. The owner said she they are waiting for city permit approval to remodel the place which include extending the bar area, which I am definitely excited to see after the renovations since it is in the heart of Downey and has immense potential. People dont know what they are missing, give this place a chance, you won't be disappointed!! read more

Hidden gem/hole in the wall type of place. We were visiting from Texas so we love a great Tex-Mex. Chips were fresh and hot, accompanying hot sauce had a nice kick to it. Carne Asada tacos were very tasty and plentiful. Baja fish tacos were amazing, heaping with tempura style fried white fish, cilantro, lettuce and a zesty sauce. I really enjoy coming to Mambo Grill in the weekends whenever I feel like having a good drink and enjoying live banda music. The girl bartenders are so sweet and they always make me feel welcomed! However, it is a small place so you have to get there early to get a good place to enjoy your drink. Drinks are decently priced and staff is friendly. The micheladas & amfs are good here. The banda is also great! Although I have had an awkward encounter with the owner one time I was there with a group of girlfriends. He just really couldn't take no for an answer and kept bugging us the whole night and got handsy at some point with one of my friends. In his defense he was trashed so I would let it slide, but it is defenitley no way to be acting as an owner of the place, it really puts a negative image on the bar just saying. read more

I started working in Downey a few years ago and while the city trips me out...Mambo Grill maxes my stoke. First off, the owner runs the place and is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. The Cajun Chicken Sandwich is one of my favorite meals anywhere. The first 10 times I went...that's what i ordered. Next I tried the tacos with an order of chips and salsa. The asada and alpastor are great. The chicken are so-so. The fresh made when I ordered them chips were warm and freakin awesome. The Cuban sandwich isn't as good as the one at Tropicana Bakery on Paramount but that's the only thing I've had there I won't have again. If you're near Downey check it out for sure. read more

I decided to take my elderly Mother out for something different, mostly to get her out of the house and noticed this little place while driving around. Thought we'd give it a try - if we didn't like it we didn't have to come back. Boy were we glad we tried it! The owner is the sweetest thing on the planet and recommended the perfect chicken breast sandwich on freshly made in house focaccia bread - DELICIOUS! Mom and I split it and were both stuffed. The garlic sauce was amazing as well. I can't say enough how happy I was that we'd stopped in, what a gem this place is. Food is FANTASTIC, customer service is off the charts and you are made to feel like one of the family. I was told by a couple guys as they were leaving that they also make the best Chilaquiles they'd ever had in their entire lives - and they were Mexican. So... Yeah - We'll be back.
