Almost every time I have visited Salt City Market, I haven't been able to try Mamma Hai for one reason or another. I finally had my chance last week! We ordered a curry lemongrass Bahn Mi - holy moly, this thing is delicious. The bread was crunchy on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. The chicken was wonderfully flavored and the crisp, fresh vegetables balanced the baguette & savory chicken perfectly. It was also a generous size! I believe it was a special on the menu, but don't quote me on this! I am not the one who ordered, so I cannot speak to the service. These are some amazing people that put a lot of love into everything they make. I enjoy the different specials they offer throughout the year, especially the mooncake for mid-autumn festival. I love their graphic of the person riding a dragon and gives the place a fun ambiance. I am not a huge fan of Vietnamese food but really wanted to try their peanut bowl. This stall is at the center of SCM, the heart so to speak. The modest but mighty menu has multiple delicious items for vegetarians. You can't go wrong with a peanut noodle bowl anywhere but this one is especially tasty. I've also had the bun vegan and the taro egg rolls. As a longtime fan of Ky Duyen for bahn min, I was excited to see this place open to provide some variety and try something new. Tried Mamma Hais three times, and while the bahn mis are ok, they are: more expensive than Ky Duyen (over $15 with tax and tip compared to $9), less flavorful (they're somewhat bland - I can't figure out why because the ingredients all seem to be there), and the preparation is slow. I can't say I'd go back, and can't really recommend it, unless you're looking for a better "dine in" option, which Salt City provides. read more

We got the curry chicken banh mi and it was amazing! I've never had a curry banh mi so this item instantly caught my attention. This shop is a food stall inside the food court with plenty of sitting area. The bahn mi is also HUGE. We shared one with two people and that was the perfect amount. Located in the center of Salt City Market you gotta say hi to Mamma Hai, something I have now done regularly. They have a small menu which usually has a choice of sandwiches or noodles, and some sides, such as taro rolls, or other specials which rotate. My go-to is the Bun Thit, a refreshing rice noodle and grilled pork salad with lettuce, herbs, and a sweet fish sauce dressing. The Bun Thit has been bright and light on hot CNY summer days, and a trip to someplace warmer on a cold days. As with most of their menu, there is a vegan version of Bun Thit available. Service is always friendly at Mamma's. Like the rest of the market you pay and then they let you know your food is ready with a buzzer. read more

What a delight... Located in salt city market we received service with the hugest smile! They offer three varieties of bánh mì sandwiches - we opted for the vegetarian and would highly recommend it. I finally visited Mama Hai and I tried their Mixed Miến Noodles. They were glass noodles with tofu, mixed vegetables, and sesame seeds tossed in a jujube, goji berry soy sauce. It was new to me eating the cold tofu in a hot noodle dish but the nuttiness of the sesame seeds and the salty sauce were nicely balanced. I had the Marco Polo bahn mi -- I figured from the pepperoni in the description that they were more about cool fusion than strict authenticity, and I was right. It cost about twice what I'd pay for a traditional banh mi, but, dang, it was huge, probably three times the volume of a those banh mi, so it was actually sort of a bargain. There was a generous serving of tasty meat, along with lots of carrots and other veggies, in a nod to the traditional flavors. The bread, especially, seemed really awesome -- with a great crispy crunch when you bit into it, and a pleasant texture inside. When I complemented the chef on the awesome bread roll, she said they got it from a Vietnamese bakery in Philadelphia (or was it Pittsburg -- in any case, they went to some serious trouble to get the good stuff). I am very happy with my meal from Mama Hai. I spoke with the chef and received recommendations for vegetarian food. My friend and I split a Hanoi Jane and a Mixed Mien. The Hanoi Jane was served on a fresh and delicious baguette with crispy tofu, fresh cilantro and a vegetarian pate. Outstanding! The Mixed Mien contained cellophane noodles with herbs, vegetables and the best crispy tofu I have eaten anywhere. It actually looked like calamari. The dish contained just the right amount of a delicious sauce. Non-vegetarian meals are on the menu as well. This appears to be a family affair, which is nice to see. I asked for an additional plate to split the entrees and staff were accommodating. I will certainly make a return trip to this restaurant. read more

Tried Mama Hai while visiting Syracuse on a trip. I tried the Marco Polo bánh mì which was delicious! Bread is a big factor for me and I loved the crunchy outside with the soft inside of the bread roll. Although I wished there was more pickled vegetables in it, I would hands down be back when I am in the area again! We also tried the egg roll which was full of asian flavors. The vendors were so polite, the order was made fresh and fast... And it was DELICIOUS! I highly recommend: just the right amount of spice, so many textures and flavors in one meal! We got the Vietnamese Udon and the Saigon Summer rolls. The summer rolls made a great appetizer (we loved the peanut sauce) along with a Belgian saison beer we picked up locally. Okay most of the general reviews are under Salt City Market, but I'm gonna review Mamma Hai here. We were lucky that they decided to open Sunday on their normally closed day as there was an event outside. And yeah, prices at food halls and food trucks are gonna be higher than the ethnic 'hood hole-in-the-walls, but here definitely worth it. They're also friendly, explaining each dish. I had their banh bao, ready to eat while waiting for made-to-order main, Never heard of it before and it was delish - steamed bun with ground pork and veg inside (even pepperoni slices), plus a surprise steamed quail egg in the middle. I got the curry chicken banh mi sandwich. Banging on it, the bread seemed hard but eating it, it was just crisp outside and soft inside like it's supposed to be. The filling was lots of flavorful pulled chicken (not used to such protein generosity in other places) with good balance of veg - not hot spicy, just perfect and a nice long baguette.
