I've been meaning to go here since I first visited the Big Island last year. The restaurant is of course found inside the Manago Hotel. FYI - they are currently closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. They do serve breakfast but we came for lunch. We were immediately seated and the menu was on the board and they gave us some water. The staff are very friendly and answered our questions about the menu - how the fish was prepared and what the special was. Price point is a little high but the quality was well worth it. The husband, college roommate and I shared two entrees. We ordered their large sized pork chops and their special, opakapaka. We got two large pork chops with bone and it was seared nicely. It was also super juicy. We asked for the gravy and onions on the side and that was nice so we can control how much we could smother our chops with. The seasoning was simple, which I appreciated because there weren't so many different flavors trying to stand out. The gravy seems to be your standard brown gravy. The onions were a nice addition to the juicy pork chop and it added a different texture to the dish. Their special, the opakapaka was pan fried in some butter and garlic. Though the filets were on the smaller side, we still appreciated the buttery goodness of the dish. The fish was cooked well and it was flaky and not overdone. Oh, we also took the excess sauces from each dish and topped it off on our rice. It was delicious. The sides that the entrees came with were chicken long rice, seaweed salad and a potato Mac salad. I feel like the chicken king rice stood out. The noodles were thick from soaking up all that broth. The seaweed salad wasn't salty but it had a nice crunchy texture. The potato Mac salad had good flavor and wasn't at all mushy, so I really enjoyed that. Overall, it was a great meal and would definitely go back when I'm around the Kona area. As for the restaurant itself, it's very nostalgic. Like what others have said, no AC but the windows were open so you can feel the breeze. We loved looking around in the lobby and in the restaurant itself - all the photos and etc. Definitely would come back again to try the other entrees and another order of pork chops. The last time I went to Manago Hotel for lunch was about 30 years ago and I had very fond memories of dining there because it takes you back to the times when restaurants like these were common. I was looking forward to taking my family and told them not to expect too much because I don" think the younger generation from Oahu have ever dined in a "family style" like this. When I arrived I was happy to see that not much has changed in thirty years including the menu. The service can be hectic because they seat whole families, but they try to be prompt. We ordered beer and were served our water and side dishes next. There were two larges tables before us but they got to us in a timely manner. We ordered miso butterfish, hamburger steak, BLT, grilled Ono and pork chops. Every dish was excellent with the exception of the butter garlic Ono which was slightly overcooked. I was disappointed that they didn't have opelu or the pickled ogo (crunchy seaweed). The food here is what you would expect at a family gathering or eating at grandma's house, so don't expect nice plating of your meal here. I wouldn't say that this is a more local place, but a restaurant built around simple food done well. I and sure to come back someday. read more

I tried the pork chops for the first time. I seriously don't get what all the hype is. They were good, but not outstanding. Kinda oily even when it was served. The pork chop at Restaurant Kenichi in Hilo is much better. What Manago does have over everyone is the experience. A throwback to a different time. I like that part. The meal was pretty good except for the potato Mac salad. I'm not a fan of plenty onions in the mac salad -- some ok, as it is an essential ingredient. Managos had too much onion. Also, they got cucumber in it also. I'm not a fan, but if you like that style, Manago is the place for you. read more

Stopped by on a weekend get-a-way. Heard many great things about this place for many years. Had to try their famous pork chops. My friend choose it with gravy and onions. It arrived bathed in a delicious brown gravy and covered with sauteed onions. Two big pieces. He said it's was everything that we heard of. I had the sauteed mahi with a lemon butter sauce. The fish was definitely fresh as it just melted in my mouth. Our meals came with rice, Mac spaghetti salad, streamed broccoli and mixed veggies all served family style. The restaurant has an old family feeling. The staff was friendly. Make sure we were okay and refilled our water without having to ask. Parking was plentiful. What a treat I was in being able to visit this small-town gem that is also the James Beard America's Classic 2023 winner! It wasn't until I read the James Beard winners that I saw a Hawaii restaurant take the title for the Pacific and Northwest region. Being foodies, my friend and I wanted to try this place on our trip to the Big Island. After an eventful day, we chose to come to Manago for dinner. I called in advance to make reservations which I recommend (now that they're under the spotlight). We arrived earlier than our time and were brought to our table which we appreciated! From the moment I stepped in I felt transported to my Grandmother's kitchen. The historic family-owned restaurant isn't anything fancy-- old school wooden building, simple dining furniture, and mismatched dishes for serving. Yet, the service here is sweet and you feel as if you've been taken care of by close family. Their simple and limited menu is posted on the wall with their breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. Based on the reviews, I knew they were well-known for their pork chops. Though I lean more towards seafood, I knew I had to try what they were famous for! My friend and I chose to order and share their Pork Chops and Miso Butterfish (plain or Miso option). The Pork Chops came with two cuts and we asked for the gravy and onions on the side. They gave us the right order but for the wrong table and took it away. When we were served again our pork chops had gravy and onions on them which wasn't too big of a deal. When it came time to try the pork chops we were underwhelmed. Though well-sized, one chop was overcooked. It was dry, crunchy, and hard to cut. The other chop was juicy and cooked better but nothing memorable. The gravy was savory and light and the onions were well-cooked. All of our excitement built up unfortunately let us down. For the fish, I was initially given the wrong item--Ono. Once I got the butterfish they piled on the sauce which was a little overwhelming. The miso was very sweet and I had to scrape it off. The fish was delicate and light but had a few big bones in it that weren't edible. All of their entrees come with three side dishes and steamed rice. The side dishes for our visit were Ogo, Mac Salad, and Noodles. The ogo was my favorite of the three. It was nicely seasoned and a tad salty, the mac salad was creamy and hearty, and the noodles were plain but a good compliment to the other flavors. Though we didn't have the best experience, I recommend others to order the fish. I feel that we both would've enjoyed our meal more if we tried something different. Manago Hotel and Restaurant served a simple yet filling meal during my trip to the Big Island! This restaurant emulates history and nostalgia all while serving home-style food all at an affordable price. Located inside the Manago Hotel, you'll have to walk past the check-in to the back to access the restaurant. Parking can be found in their two private lots or on the street in front. Maybe this place was nice once, and maybe it's just that Hawaii generally seems ok with everything being dirty and run down...but there is a difference between being the Oldest in Hawaii and just being old and run down This place is filthy, the food was 3rd tier at best, and EVERYTHING, about the place is either cobbled together or just plain broken and dirty If this were located ANYWHERE else on the planet, it would be a questionable homeless shelter or the weird hotel at the edge of town where felons stay as a long term residence. It's dirty, broken, not cared for, the food is low grade, and it's in the middle of nowhere. I feel like the current owners are just running on a legacy that their grand parents built...and now they are just waiting for the real estate to be worth enough that someone will buy it and tear it down and put something decent in its place. I got a half order of French toast, which is just one piece of toast. I really liked the French toast because it was super light and not too eggy like other French toasts. Pro tip: you can order half orders of the French toast and pancakes. I also ordered a fried egg on the side for some protein. They also serve free coffee! We were lucky to find street parking right outside of the restaurant. It's in a beautiful area and definitely worth taking a stroll around the property. Dining in a historical location! Really enjoyed coming to the oldest restaurant/hotel in the Hawaiian islands! Menu is a mix of classic diner food and hawaiian/Japanese comfort foods. The meals come with sides which reflected this fusion. Seaweed salad, sweet corn and peas, mac/potato salad and white rice. I went with the smothered bone in pork chops (comes with two chops) with gravy and onions. I was hungry so I also got the fish special of the day (opakupaku) pan fried in butter. Historic family-owned hotel and restaurant situated along the hillside of Captain Cook area. They are known to be over 100 years old and still have reasonably affordable food and lodging. Tried their famous pork chop plate to go. Comes with sides of rice, potato salad, broccoli in sesame oil, boiled cabbage, and pickled radish. There were 2 pork chops and I asked for the onions and gravy to be on the side. It was a decent deal for $16.50. We also stayed overnight here recently for a few days and it is a no frills type of place with no elevators or air conditioning (but they do have fans). Facility is non-smoking and there's no fridge in the room. Note that they prohibit guests from bringing any food heating/cooking appliances too, as it is grounds for eviction from the hotel. Overall we had a comfortable and clean stay (housekeeping is every 3 days). It is in a peaceful area surrounded by wildlife but you'll hear multitudes of birds (including roosters crowing) and geckos chirping in the evenings and early morning. We even had about 3 geckos enter our room somehow. Wifi is OK, it dropped a few times so probably not ideal for remote workers who depend on strong wifi and have to stream/video conference for important meetings. Parking lots are on both sides of the restaurant/hotel. Electricity went out for about 5 minutes 1 night too. However I still adore the overall charms and refuge this hotel provides away from the bustling pace of downtown Kona. read more

Long time favorite! My family has been coming here for 30+ years and the food is consistently good. I'm not much of a pork eater, but their pan fried pork chops have to be their #1 dish. So 'ono! I also enjoy their fish options and have tried their butterfish, opah, and 'ōpelu. The restaurant sits behind the lobby/lounge area with a partial ocean view. Eating in is so nostalgic, it really takes you back to the good 'ol days with its charming, retro style and simplistic ambiance. The staff is great too. Okay so I've been wanting to try Mango's for such a long time and finally got to do so, YUM!! They're finally open for takeout and dine in, located 3 mins north of captain cook choicemart! I got a Togo and went over the top with excellent food and service! The order was ready for pick up when I got there, it was packaged (main and each side comes packaged individually) and was absolutely delicious!! I got the Buttery Fish which was cooked magnificently, melt off bones, I wish I would have ordered two for leftovers but one portion is huge and comes with all sides pictured! Mac salad, green beans, veggies huge rice side and miso sauce for fish - I loved the fish even without the sauce!! I will most definitely return, most likely for dine in, and will recommend to others! Great spot for us south side that are craving a delectable healthy meal with fair pricing!! I have been coming here for over 30 years for their ever so popular Fried Pork Chops, Fresh Fried Opelu or Akule, and Hamburger Steak with Brown Gravy. The side dishes that come with your Entree vary but are all delicious. I love sitting by a window if it's available. Reservations are welcomed, especially for large parties. We come here every year when we go to Kona. We typically take the drive here for the pork chop. They start by giving you side dishes which we think as a group of 10 people was not appetizing. Potato salad was bland and the broccoli was overcooked and not very good either. For our main dishes: Butterfish - 2/5 the portion was small and I didn't even finish the whole thing. There were fish bones in every bite I was afraid to have fish bones stuck in my throat. Teri Beef - 4/5 order this instead. Flavor and marinate on the beef is good enough. Pork chop - 3/5 used to be good years ago. This time its just a pork chop nothing special about it. I believe it was fried and they give you gravy to pour on top. My son said the Shake and Bake pork chop is way better than this pork chop. Sorry I think we might skip this place going forward. read more

Don't be fooled by its simple exterior. Manago Hotel is an unassuming diamond in the rough. We managed to get ahead of the lunch rush and thought, "there's no way a James Beard award-winning restaurant is this empty on a weekend afternoon?" But once Sunday mass let out, the small diner quickly filled up. Despite this, service was fast. If you're a tourist, expect the servers to chat with locals between carting out orders on chunky rubber carts. Apparently, the pork chops are the star dish and the liver and onions are a tasty second. But here you'll find no recommendations section or even mention of any accolades - James Beard or otherwise. Here's what we did try: * The sides of the week were mac salad, hijiki (seaweed) salad, and a veggie mix of corn, peas, and carrots. The hijiki salad was definitely the winner of the three with a bright, acidic taste. The mac salad was a little strange with cut spaghetti noodles instead of macaroni. Steamed white rice was also served in big bowls. * Teriyaki Chicken - Looks like it was boiled in sadness but it is happiness on a plate. Perfectly tender and packed with flavor. This is a protein-lover's dream. * NY Steak - Buttery and cooked to perfect. Super tasty. * Mahi Mahi Sandwich - Again, unassuming but crazy flavorful. Loved this. * Cheeseburger - This one caught me by surprise. With a smoky but light flavor, I wouldn't be surprised if this was truly ground steak packed into a buttery patty that I wish I could conjure at the snap of my fingers. The group agreed that this was the best dish of them all. After a morning of sea kayaking to Capt Cook's monument, this was a delicious, filling, and inexpensive lunch (especially comparing the flavor and quality you get from the tourist traps around the area) that I wish I had had time to revisit to try every dish at least once. If you're lucky, you can follow up with a visit to the farmer's market across the street for banana bread or a kombucha float. read more

We came here straight from KOA even though it was the opposite direction from our hotel. After a quick drive from KOA we arrived just in time before lunch service ended. I ordered the pork chops!
