My husband and I love pizza, so on our last night on the Big Island we decided to grab pizza before our manta ray night swim. We ordered one small pizza to go and were happy to see how many options they had. Unfortunately for us, a lot of them included pork, which we don't eat. Still, I picked one pizza I was really curious about, and I was pleasantly surprised when they had no problem swapping pepperoni for chicken. That flexibility is always appreciated, and it never felt like we were limited just because we don't eat pork. We didn't dine in, but I noticed they have a really interesting cocktail menu, which fits the island vibe perfectly! To be honest, my husband wasn't expecting much, pizza isn't exactly what you come to Hawaii for, right? That's what we assumed. But wow, we were wrong. About 40 minutes later, back at our hotel (after a shower and everything), we finally sat down to eat, and the pizza was still amazing. Crunchy crust, great texture, and full, balanced flavors. We're no longer on vacation, but we still talk about this place and easily rank it in our top three food spots from our Big Island trip, which says a lot, because we're serious about pizza. If we ever come back to Hawaii (and I believe they have locations on other islands too), we will 100% be getting pizza from here again. We were very hungry and saw great reviews on this pizza place so we stopped by. The restaurant has great ocean view outside, and seems pretty clean. Server is friendly. We ordered a small loco moco pizza, and made a half and half pizza with not so Hawaiian and another specialty with the same spicy marinara sauce, forgot the name. Loco moco pizza is good, with running yolk fried egg on top. Not so Hawaiian and the other one is good but not impressive. I remember the not so Hawaiian being cheesy, which is a plus. Heard about this spot from a local friend. Told me to get the ribeye cheesesteak. And boy was he right! That thing was so awesome! Crispy edges and lot of flavor. Parking can be tight but if you don't go during peak hours it should be okay. It's a small lot. They've got some great signs lining the walls that I wish I could have at home myself too! You can mix pizzas if you order a medium or up, so I tried the kanak attack and local boy with BBQ glaze on top. It was loaded! We were told that this is some of the best pizza on the Big Island. We were not steered wrong! We stopped on our way to the airport. And OMG the Black Sand Margarita is a must! They have sandwiches now that are made with their pizza crust and so delicious I got the Italian. Took half on plane with me and was able to eat it cold the next day and it was still good. My husband got the spicy pepperoni. He said it was so good he didn't have to add red pepper flakes to it. He got the 8 inch and still took half of the pizza on the plane and ate it the next day. My review is strictly on the food. We called in an order for pick up on our way home from Volcano park. They close at 9, and we were going to be getting there right around 8:45. I called in our order. It was super loud in the background and the lady on the phone had a hard time hearing me. Our food was ready upon arriving. We ordered the pepperoni rolls which were absolutely delicious. After eating our meal we wish we had just done two orders off those. We also ordered a small pie. After reading previous reviews I had a different expectation in my mind. Our pizza had minimal sauce on it, but a good portion of meats and veggies. I am not sure if I would dine in here. Touted as one of the best pizza spots on The Big Island... And it lives up to the hype! There are two locations on the island and a third location over on Maui. The Black Rock Pizza in Captain Cook was just down from where the rental was that we were staying in. We called in a takeout order on our way back from Punalu'u Beach... For those who may not know Punalu'u Beach is a beautiful black sand beach frequented by Hawaiian green sea turtles... We grabbed a couple the choice is yours (aka build your own) pies, an order of garlic butter breadsticks and the signature order of Big Island Balls (bread balls stuffed with Jalapeno, bacon, and cheese). The order was ready on our arrival. Service was great. Everything was hot and fresh. The parking at the Captain Cook location is limited in front of the shop, but there's additional parking across the road. The pizza was good. Not going to lie...I have my true favorites back home...but it's always a great thing to try some local fare. I would have loved to have tried a couple of their Local Kine Pizzas, but alas... I had bland travel partners. smh It is what it is. It probably doesn't need to be said...but for me the star of the show was the Balls! Lol These are a must try! So good! Some would consider it pricey, but that's the cost of eating out on the island... You probably spend $600ish+ on economy round trip tickets to get here. The pizza here is a decent 6.8/10 service INSIDE the restaurant is always good no complaint there. But what's going to keep me from patronizing this business in the future, from someone who's been coming in at least once a week for a while now, is the fact they've enlisted or subscribed to an a.i. service to take their phone orders. The ai service is trash, companies that do this are clear in their intentions they don't value their employees and the difference human touch makes in customer service. We were here a few weeks ago for dinner, just because it was down the street from where we were staying and they were open when the place we were going to go to, closed early that day. When we got there, they were clearly *super* busy, so I was worried it'd take forever to get a table and/or food, but they had a few seats at the bar (my favorite place to sit, anyway, generally), and yes, everyone was clearly running around like crazy, but they all seemed friendly (when you could snag one from the dozen other things they were doing). Anyway, we still got our order taken, our drinks, and our pizza, all pretty fast. The pizza we got was $34 for a large, though I will say, a large was 4 meals worth (we both also had lunch the next day, so not actually a bad value). We did like that they had some Hawaiian flavored ones - we went for the one that was basically a combo, but with kalua pork. The pizza, I'd say, was good, but not exceptional. I enjoyed it all well enough, but I feel like there's a reason Hawaii is famous for its poke and Japanese and obviously its Hawaiian food, not its pizza so much. Plenty of toppings (though I'm a "more is more" kind of person with pizza toppings), and all the toppings were pretty good (I'm still sad my wife didn't want to try the moco loco pizza), overall, pretty good pizza, might be the best pizza on the island, but definitely not quite as good as any of several of the best pizzas in Long Beach, let alone in NYC. I am glad we dined in, so I could have a cider with it (well, half of it; funny enough the other half we ate at a winery the next day for lunch, as just as good cold flatbread). I was happy they had a cider on draft from Ola - Ola makes great ciders, just wish they'd distribute them to California! (I did go there and bring a bunch back, also, obviously.) Great to support local cider, but also just good to have a great cider to go with pizza! (The cider was $7 - totally reasonable.) My wife had their $3 (nonalcoholic) house-made strawberry lemonade - I tried some of it, it was also very good. Finally, the reason they were originally on my road-map, for dessert - my original itinerary notes for myself put them down with the note, "ube cannoli? Possibly just go there for dessert". They do still have an ube/chocolate cannoli for $7, we shared one obviously (ube is having a huge moment in Long Beach right now too, but I think Hawaii got there first).
