Got 1/4 lb of a few different pokes to try. We got the salmon poke, southside sweety poke, shoyu poke, wasabi poke, slippery Hawaiian, and dhawaiian poke. The salmon and tuna were all very fresh and everything was very well seasoned. The names are very accurate in describing the poke flavor. Our favorites were the salmon poke and the slippery Hawaiian poke, saucy and great balance of savory, salty, umami, and a bit of sweetness. The wasabi poke had a very very strong wasabi flavor, so be warned! We also tried their ube lemonade and Mac salad. The ube lemonade was a nice purple color, but it didn't taste much like ube and the lemonade didn't taste fresh either. The Mac salad was a bit too creamy and dense in our opinion. So we'd skip these but definitely get the poke + rice bowl! read more

We originally planned to visit one of the most popular poke spots on the Big Island, but unfortunately it was closed on Saturday and Sunday, which was a disappointment. So instead, we found this place, which had a very appealing menu with lots of poke options. We ordered two different poke bowls and also tried one of the triangular rolls with fish. The triangle with fish was actually very good. As for the poke itself, while we were eating it on our first evening, I didn't say anything out loud. But the next day, my husband brought it up on his own and said, "The poke wasn't really that good, right?" That's when I realized it wasn't just me being picky. We both felt the same way. The main issue was freshness. The poke didn't taste very fresh. We did pick it up in the evening, but honestly, that shouldn't matter. If a place is open until 6 p.m., the food should still be good until closing time. If that's not possible, it might make more sense to close earlier, like some other poke places in Hawaii do. That said, it wasn't terrible. We liked some of the sides, especially the kimchi, and nothing tasted "bad" or unsafe, it just wasn't enjoyable or memorable. The flavors didn't really come together for us. Because of that, I feel a bit conflicted about this place. Maybe if you go earlier in the day, the poke is fresher and the experience is better. Our timing may have affected our impression, but based on our visit, it just didn't hit the mark. P.S. I will put 4 for a service mostly. Ordered the two choice poke bowl with south side sweety and spicy avo, side of kimchee cucumber. Got it to go, so I think that's why they put them in containers? Otherwise they have seating outside if you'd like to enjoy there. Plenty furikake on top too. Poke bowl was great. Poke was fresh, flavors were strong but not overpowering. We got the 1 pound Hawaiian ahi and they only filled it halfway so it was basically 1/2 pound but we paid for 1lb. We also got 1/2 lb kimchee edamame and 1/2 lb seaweed and ended up paying $45. I'm giving four stars for the service and the fact that it's a family business but to me the poke was just OK. Maybe it was just an off day but the fish didn't have the texture that I would attribute to fresh that day fish and it didn't seem like it marinated for that long in the sauce. Stopped here for lunch because Super J's was closed and wished I didn't. I'm not sure if I went on an off day, because I don't understand why the reviews for this place are so high. I went on a Saturday a little before noon with only one person in front of me but I ended up waiting around 45 minutes for a two scoop poke bowl. Many people mention great service, but after we ordered we continued to wait with no word on how long our order would take or any communication at all. It felt like they forgot our order because a couple behind us got a poi bowl and poke plate, finished it, then left while we were still waiting on our food. After that they had a tour bus full of people come but that was maybe 10 minutes after placing our order. As for the poke itself, it did not taste fresh at all. I ordered the salmon and Hawaiian with a side of poi. The salmon had the bloodline on it (as least I'm hoping) and it made it taste tougher which isn't my experience with salmon at all. Homaunau is one of those road side places that most people overlook becoming it doesn't have a huge sign with lights and it's not a chain restaurant. I feel sorry for those that fail to stop. It was a few outdoor tables and chairs on a covered patio and you also have to order at a sliding window. The staff were friendly. But its places like this create some of the most amazing good. We ordered 4 types of poke and multiple sides. The flavors of everything were exceptional. The ingredients were super fresh. Honaunau is one of those special places you need to seek out and enjoy. If you want a no frills poke place with incredibly fresh fish, look no further. Easy to find just off the main road. Easy parking. This was one of many other poke places my friends and I tried on Kona and it was good, but not amazing, hence the 3 stars. There were a lot of choices of different poke you could choose from, which was nice but hard to make a quick decision. One of the reviewers described it perfectly that despite the varieties, the poke was either too salty or too sweet. The flavoring was too overpowering, such as one of the poke being too peppery. The way you order is by how many scoops of poke you want. One Choice Poke - one poke + one side ($17) Two Choice Poke - 2 pokes + one side ($23) Veggie Bowl - rice + 3 sides ($13.50) Poke Set - 2 scoops of rice + 2 sides + 4 pokes ($44) There were 4 of us and we got 2 poke sets, which was a few dollars less than ordering 2 of the two choice poke. Interestingly, when they give you your poke, they give it to you in separate containers and you assemble your poke dish/bowl by yourself. This did help us pack the food we were unable to finish. If I was ever back in Kona again, I would personally go back to where I had my first poke bowl in Hawaii, which is listed in my reviews. read more

Delicious poké place on the side of the road. There are outdoor seating. They have a wide variety of poké to choose from as well as other foods. If you go late, some might be sold out. The poké was fresh and delicous! I had the California poké and spicy creamy poké, both of which are tuna. I prefer the spicy creamy one better since the California one was a bit salty but both were delicious! I wasn't a fan of the sides we chose. Overall Experience 9.2/10 The restaurant is located on the side of the highway and serves one if the best poke on the island. Their menu is huge and there is a lot of styles of poke and sides to try from. We got the shoyu, Hawaiian, creamy spicy, and south side sweetie for poke and seaweed salad and spicy aioli crab for sides. The food was served in containers within containers, which helps not making a mess if you are traveling with it but we poured it all onto the plate when we ate at the benches outside of the shop. The shoyu has a great blend of salty and umami, with the freshness from the green onions and onions. But my favorite was the sweet side sweetie which was a perfect blend of salty, sweet and umami. I think this might be the best poke I've had, or at least the best tuna poke (I still personally say salmon is the best, but I also get that the best is what's fresh, and Hawaii is full of tuna!) It was $23 for a combo, which sounds like a lot, except one of your two fish picks can be tuna with *lobster*, and you get a *bunch* of lobster. $23 for fish this fresh that also includes a bunch of lobster, that's suddenly very reasonably priced! (I also got the spicy tuna, which was also great.) I was just sad the combo only comes with 1 side here, cause you can't *not* get seaweed salad (incidentally, their seaweed salad is probably the tastiest, most flavorful I've had, anywhere), but they also had li hing fresh lychee?! My wife got the poke nachos, and I think it might have been because we said we hadn't been here, or to Hawaii, so the guy serving was being extra nice - but the poke nachos were *stuffed*. We traveled to the Big Island on New Year's Day. Sounds fun, right? ... Until we realized that there were already limited food options in the Captain Cook's area and most of them were closed after 3pm on a Monday, let alone a holiday. While hubs and I love poke, with 3 kids between the age of 2 and 10 we weren't really going to get poke... Or so we thought until we realized this poke shop became the only dinner option after a long day of traveling. So we gave it a shot... And boy was the selection vast! The two choice bowl seemed a little pricy at $23, but we figured we'd get two to sample different things and have rice for the kids to eat. We ended up ordering spicy bowl (creamy spicy and spicy garlic with spicy crab side) and a non spicy bowl (house and non spicy avo with corn salad) and they didn't disappoint! The fish tasted fresh and the poke very flavorful. Best yet, the kids tried poke for the first time and wouldn't stop eating! They loved the house poke which was a bit sweet, and they were able to eat the spicy ones (not that spicy, to me) but had to drink milk after. I got both white and brown rice with furikake, and they loved the white rice. The corn salad was scooped up till the very last kernel. It was definitely a win! read more
