Today (Friday night) we went to Mangu at about 9pm, first the restaurant was really cold and I couldn't take off my jacket. Second there were three drunks in the corner table arguing about $20 hugging each other for about half hour then arguing and trying to dance with each other( it was hilarious but was worried they would come near us). Then the food, my husband ordered fried chicken chunks with rice and beans and I ordered skirt steak otherwise known as churrasco with tostones and salad. The chicken was burnt and salty but the churrasco was horrible, it's was overcooked and have you ever drank a gulp of sea water, that's the best description I could do for that steak. This past weekend I traveled to NYC myself and Friends were looking for a breakfast place in NY and happen to come across this restaurant. The breakfast on the pictures looked amazing and to top it off they opened at 6:00am. We parked in front of the restaurant and they were closed we ended up waiting outside till past 8-9am so that they could open. By the time we got in the food wasn't ready so we had to wait for another hour. We were so hungry we ordered a piece of cake which looked like it was there for a few days but the hunger made us order a piece. When we finally got the food the Mangu was horrible, it tasted like pure milk . Ordered here last weekend when I was starving! Delivery took FOR EVER when we are three blocks away, serves me right for being lazy I guess... YoU cannot see the server when ordering takeout frOM here because she is blocked by the obstruSive shelf that hovers over the food. You have to contort your body downward in order to make eye contact and feel you are getting your message across. Communication is further hindered by the loud music and/or news programming. The servers are sullen and unenthusiastic. THe food itself gets a passable grade until you spy the "C" grade thAt is pOsted on the doorway side window, which is at 90 degrees to tHe street and tHerefore conveniently hidden from view of the public. The place is called Mangu... MANGU for god sake! You'd think the mangu is their signature dish. NOT!!! It has got to be the worst mangu I've ever had. It was like eating a mashed plantain with some sort of sticky jello texture. Yuck! The sausage was sliced very thin and the chicken finger looking fried cheese was too chewy. This place is heaven on College Point Blvd. Their menu items are authentic and absolutely delicioso! The food is always hot and and fresh and never disappoints. Moved to the area recently and decided to give this place a try, despite all the terrible reviews. I've gone twice to eat in now and both times I've had very little to complain about. The first time we had to request water three times, and the second visit it took them a bit to sit us (they could use a few more people in the wait staff). Other than that, there's really nothing to complain about. We had the same waitress both visits and she was always very friendly and accommodating. Each visit I had different family members with me, and both groups were very satisfied with the way she treated us. She even made sure to let us know when our food was going to take a bit long, and checked on us every chance she got. The food was delicious! The first time I had the steak with onions which was fantastic. The taste was just right, plenty of onions and the portion was too much for me (I took half of it home). My uncles got the shrimp mofongo and my husband the chicken chunks with bones, with a side of rice and beans. Everyone loved their dish! I've tried each dish as takeout and have to agree, specially the shrimp mofongo, it was amazing, saucy and overall tasted super authentic. The second time I went was yesterday and I tried the longaniza mofongo. It was fantastic, and I very much recommend it. Everyone enjoyed their food, and drinks (definitely recommend the morir soñando and the lemonade). I understand why so many people complain about the service, they seem to be understaffed and overly popular. But the food is delicious, and at least the waitress I've had, was very polite and friendly. I've been there to takeout as well and the girls behind the counter were also very friendly. I've been at this place twice , years apart . My first experience was awful , food was awful , nothing tasted like Dominican food . Service , staff was bad . My daughter decided to give this place a second chance and I said ok because sometimes places and people had bad days . I am super picky with food bc I LOVE GOOD food. Since living in the area, good food choices is a very rare gem. For the area of mangu grill, its the best of the worse. I eat here when Im desperate and dont want to travel far to eat. There have been more than a couple of times I've eaten here and fell ill because my body has a gross reaction to food not kept hot enough. So if you are hungry and have a strong stomach give it a try (or order off the menu not the buffet option), its better than most other spots in the area. Definitely give this place a try, just finished eating here with my boyfriend on the hunt for some good Dominican food. We ordered the combo #5 which is honestly enough food for a family of four. The portions were generous and the pork chops were soft and very flavorful. We also ordered a side of Yuca fries and of coarse I had to try the Mangu. The mangu was very creamy, I'm glad they live up to the name. Definitely can't wait to come back. The service was awesome, the girls and very friendly and attentive. Was in the area and wanted a quick bite. Wasn't many options around so went ahead with this place and ordered a trusty rice and chicken - simple enough right? WRONG. I ordered half a chicken and she pulls it off the machine and cuts it in half. At that point I'm waiting for her to put the half chicken in, instead I saw her cutting the half into smitherines and then plucking out meat from my half and placing it into her own container. When I got my plate there was less than a quarter of meat and only shell of chicken skin. She tried to hide it by throwing a bunch of rice and beans on top. Food was literally disgusting. For some odd reason, they don't give out the exact change. I ordered a to go and the change they were supposed to give back was $1.21. they didn't give me a penny back. Only the dollar and twenty cent. I said you forgot a penny and the cashier gave it to me. I went there the second time. Same thing happened. This review is a couple of months late but I stumbled across this place on Yelp and was reminded of my terrible experience. We ordered dinner from here for my job on a Saturday night (despite the seemingly bad reviews I had seen). They picked up fairly quickly and told us delivery would be 40 minutes, pretty standard. The food seemed pretty cheap and I wasn't expecting the worst. 1 hour goes by and no food. That hour turned in 2 hours!! When we finally get out food, we are starving and praying that this food tastes so good that it makes up for the wait - we were wrong. The bistec sandwich was cold, dry meat with a few grilled onions thrown onto a stale hoagie roll. The rice was overcooked, the maduros and the tostones tasted like nothing and the "calamari" smelled and looked like something pulled out of the sewer.
