    everything with cream cheese
    Michelle R.

Every time I visit with my parents in NJ, I have to have my everything bagel with cream cheese from Manhattan Bagel. It's a simple order, but after living in the South where good bagels are limited to non-existent, you come to appreciate the simplicity of an everything with cream cheese. This was my bagel place before I left home, and it's still my bagel place now.

Food is very good and always fresh, but the prices are pretty high. The food always comes out hot and never cold.

It is a welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff and cute simple decor that has a communal feel. The specials menu had some fun and exciting choices for st Patrick's day! There was also a listing for blueberry pierogies which we decided we just had to try. I think the concept is exciting and new- but the inside of the pierogies were only blueberries which weren't very sweet. We thought it could be even better with the addition of a sweetened ricotta, cream cheese, or mascarpone inside to compliment the berries. There was a drizzle of some kind of icing which was tasty and went well but there wasn't enough of it. We ordered our meals from their regular menu. They must have polish roots because pierogies and kielbasa show up on the menu a few times. I saw "pierogie omelet" and was sold. You can tell their pierogies are freshly made and it makes all the difference. I probably wouldn't get the omelet again because it was kind of a lot happening at once, however, next time I go I think I definitely would like to get the pierogi platter they offer because I enjoyed the kielbasa and pierogies so much. My sister got a strawberry arugula salad with crispy chicken. I did not try it but I tried a piece of chicken and it was deliciously crisp. She said everything was really good and the strawberries were perfect and ripe. My mom, who got the protein pancake with fruit on side agreed. My other sister got a tuna wrap which she also enjoyed. I also like that they do a 1/2 tea 1/2 lemonade with your choice of flavor. I got the raspberry and it was delicious - not too sweet but the flavor was there. Our waitress was a gem and we never felt rushed.

Our waitress was great but she was working the entire side of the restaurant where we were sitting. This was especially pronounced because one of my guests couldn't leave late. Food: subpar. We were here a few times a few years ago and I remember it being much better. The wings were good, especially the sauce. The sticky ribs were too salty and the ribs, while tender, tasted dry and overcooked. The pastas we ordered were overcooked and soft. The beef bulgolgi wasn't great. It was ok. Overall, a disappointment. Price is high for quality of food. Ambience: I remember this place being more lively and full. This time, on a Friday night, at dinner time, it was half empty. Other: trauma alert- read at your own risk. Once read, it cannot be unread!! When my daughter opened her napkin with the utensils, a spider jumped out at her and she was screaming! It took a while to get another set of napkins and utensils but when we finally did, I had to open the napkin for her because she was afraid to open it....

All of us with very different diets ended up finding something we loved. All of the good: -There was no trouble for 4 of us to get a table around 2:30ish on a Saturday. The space is huge, and it looked like they were even holding a private party upstairs. -A big menu with lots of options. We had everyone from vegan to basically carnivore at the table and the only trouble came when we realized most of their bread options had milk in them. The friend with a vegan diet knew to ask, but this would have been totally missed by me. She ended up getting a noodle dish and we all ate very happy. -My veggie burger was pretty good! As much as I love them, I can be a veggie burger snob. It's one of those things that need to be done right and the Gusto Grill veggie burger was done well in my opinion. Loved that it was a bit different with edamame as one of the bases. A great meal and a great time getting together with old friends. Highly recommend!

The last time we…read morewere here we were pleased with the quality and service (We visit once per year with family in the area). Unfortunately this visit we had a couple of issues. First was in payment. They charged us $19.48 if we paid cash. I gave the cashier $20.50. This means we should have received $1.02 back. Instead they gave us only $1. I was very confused. The cashier told me they are no longer giving away pennies, yet there is no sign saying this. Coming from North Carolina.... this type of thing would have a sign at the cash register. I could have given exact change if I knew they were going to short me 2 cents. It's not the amount, it's the fact there is no notification. The cashier did eventually return the 2 cents owed. Another issue with the payment is we were charged $1 additional for a jalapeno cheddar bagel. The charge was listed as "custom" on the bill. I asked what this additional charge was for. The cashier stated it was for the jalapeno bagel. I asked her if she could show me how I would know I was going to have an an additional charge for this bagel ? She pointed to fine print on their menu board that said *prices are subject to change. So is she saying we cannot trust the prices that we see on the menu board ? What I assume to be the owner stepped in and said they have been here 25 years and "everybody knows". Well, we are from out of State and do not "know". We especially don't know why a business would not simply avoid confusion by posting a sign in front of the "custom" bagel notifying that it will be priced differently than any other bagel they sell ... which says $1.50 each on the sign directly above the bagel bins. There were several different flavors, so how are we to know there are different prices if the sign above says $1.50 each ??? Instead of simply saying "Oh yes, we should probably put a sign there to avoid confusion." when I made this suggestion to add a sign to notify of the difference in price, the owner Instead got very upset and started complaining about the prices of everything going up. I told him I understand that it is very difficult; but all he needs is a sign so there are no surprises for the customer at the cash register. The owner remained upset and offered to take the bagel back instead of simply saying "that's a good idea" to help their customers avoid surprises such as this. Perhaps upon reflection the owner will see the benefit of clearly stating prices. However, his reaction is the reason that many folks avoid bringing up issues to management.
