The other thing was that the mocktails didn't come with anything to stir them with. Even a straw would have been helpful. The dining room was very loud, and we were seated right by the front door, so there was a constant flow of people walking by. I understand every restaurant has a few less-than-ideal tables. I worked in restaurants myself but it definitely affected the experience. If you're dining with a smaller group, I'd recommend sitting at the bar instead. From what I remember from previous visits, the bartenders are fantastic, and I actually prefer the atmosphere there. I had also noted on my reservation that we were celebrating my birthday. I wasn't expecting a complimentary dessert or anything, but I was surprised that neither the host nor our server acknowledged it with even a simple "Happy Birthday." It's a small detail, but thoughtful hospitality goes a long way in making a celebration feel special.

Any event with the word "free" entails large crowds, which equates to hard-to-find parking. It's always a chore to look for parking in Hermosa Beach, in general. We parked our car in Redondo Beach near the Catalina. Just fyi, metered parking units there didn't take cards or bills so bring some change. Fat Green Shirt immediately announced she felt "overworked," wasn't getting paid enough to deal with customers right now, and told us to come back later. We politely asked if we could at least get drinks while we waited. She snapped "NO!" and basically declared she wasn't serving us because she was too busy "catching up" after running out of pizza slices. She ordered us to go somewhere else. When we asked for the manager's name and contact info she flat-out refused. Meanwhile our non-minority friends walked up, ordered without a single problem, then promptly threw up and are now at urgent care. The 22nd Annual Los Angeles International Pen Show went down in Manhattan Beach this past weekend…read more My dad and I are both huge nerds and love writing with fountain pens, and little did we know that the foremost event in the world for pen enthusiasts happens right in our backyard, here in Manhattan Beach. My dad attended 6 hours of pen lectures on Saturday, including old-school penmanship lessons, an entire lecture about ink, a talk from a pen repair guy, and much more. Then on Sunday, we both attended the exhibition, which took place in 3 rooms. There were tons of pen dealers from around the world selling new and antique pens that ranged from $5 to $3400+. My dad purchased a couple vintage Parker pens and I got a Lamy Safari fountain pen. Admission to BOTH days of the Pen Show is only $6. It was a great time--totally weird but guaranteed fun for all you nerds out there.
