In the last 8 years living in this area I have trialed many places for cut/color and have finally found my home. They pay so much attention to detail and they truly care about your experience. The secretary asks if you need anything while you wait (though, I rarely am waiting more than just a few minutes) and the stylist spends the time to go over hair care at home and styling tips. I usually foil my hair and have never once had a stylist tell me, "your hair looks great- how about just 8 foils in the front today to freshen it up but save you some money?" I've ALWAYS been pressured to do more bleach and more often than necessary which is just damaging my hair unnecessarily. Here- they CARE! And it shows in just that act alone. Going to a wedding up North and wanted to look my best. Called to get a plain old blow out. No cut, no color, just a little product and a round brush. First, they tell me it will cost $70, which is $20 more than my Newbury st stylist charges me. But whatever, I need it done, so I say fine. Then, she tells me because it is a "special occasion" style. I'm going to have to prepay it over the phone. When I tell her I don't think that a standard blow out constitutes a "special occasion" style. She curtly tells me "since we have to use a straight iron it is" Obviously, a salon that thinks a blow out is a difficult procedure is not a place to get one done. My partner Jay stopped in to get his very short hair trimmed and neatened and this is what his experience was: Nice place, clean, friendly - extremely! Monique was great and did a great job. A simple haircut, for a man. With short hair and small goatee. Cost - THIRTY TWO DOLLARS, not including tip. I left Monique a decent tip since the prices were not her fault and she did a great job. But NEVER AGAIN - $32.00 is unacceptable for a small town. The entire staff at Manhattan East is always welcoming. Our son at the age of five would go to no one. But he felt so comfortable with Stephanie. He is now 19. He still goes to her. My wife always feels wonderful spiritually and emotionally when she leaves there. I began with Manhattan East back in 1994. Have been going here for 10 years. I have used three different stylists in that time. And I've loved every one of them. I've thrown every style of cut from a cute pixie to long hair at them. Every single cut was exact to what I requested. I've also given them free will over the years with out being scared of what I'd get. While the prices are higher, I guarantee you I would not get this quality of a cut, how to style it, and supporting hair products for a lesser price. "You get what you pay for" when it comes to hair, and I have never minded paying for a cut that makes me feel like "Me". read more

I have searched high and low for a great hair salon and I have finally found one. Contrary to the two reviews from other people, my hair cut was $44 and it was well worth it. Even though Peterborough is a small town, the quantity of hair salons in the area are many and they are for the most part extremely expensive. (i don't think $44.00 for a great wash, cut, blow dry is expensive) Monique cut my hair and she was thorough and informative about the current products I was using and alternatives I hadn't thought of. Great atmosphere and I really felt welcomed. I no longer will be driving 2 hours to Franklin, Massachusetts for a great haircut. Rather I found one in this great little town. read more

Sadly, what the negative reviewers say is true in that: Manhattan East is uber expensive. They hem and haw about telling you the cost of any particular type of appointment, eg., hair highlighting, even a woman's haircut is debatable. However, to give credit where it belongs, some of the stylists are simply fabulous and well, the cost is something I'm willing to pay for when the stylist deserves the money and credit. Sylvie is amazingly sweet, and does a fantastic job. I actually found Sylvie by admiring another woman's haircut I ran into and just had to comment on how great her hair looked. I am originally from NYC and accustomed to a certain level of quality, especially when it comes to my hair and Sylvie offers that quality, so I am willing to pay for it. I cannot say whether the owners are snobs or not, but I have been going off and on (my hair is very long so cuts are not too frequent and I out of habit do my own coloring), for over 17 years and I have never been treated rudely by anyone there. So, make your own judgements... you might be nicely surprised instead of the typical negative that seems to be the norm of this century thus far... read more

I read all of the poor reviews and was hesitant to try Manhattan. So I called and scheduled an appointment to get my beard trimmed. The women on the phone was very friendly. I asked how much it would be and she said 7 dollars and scheduled me with Melissa for the next day. I got there and they took me early. Melissa was very friendly and professional. I got my beard trimmed quickly (She also trimmed my eyebrows) and it looked great. When I went to pay I was worried but it was only 7 dollars as they told me the day prior. Worst experience I have ever had. I had the owner do my hair-cut and blow dry. I waited over 1/2 an hour beyond my appointment and she never apologized even when I mentioned the wait. After she took my money, she told me that she was very busy because the salon was one of the best and I would have to get used to the wait. Although my hair came out well, it is overpriced, and the owner is rude and believes in 'customer-serve-us' in spite of the rhetoric on their website. I will never go back. read more

Went in for a simple trim. Referral from a friend said it would be $35, more than I usually spend but needed it for a special occasion. Arrived at 2:00. Started trim at 2:15, finished at 2:30. Cut maybe 1 inch off of my hair. Most of the time was spent primping my hair with water and finishing it with some oil I didn't want. BLEW MY MIND when they charged me $46 without tip. OMG this place is such a rip off never again. I'll try a barber shop next time. Buyer beware. read more

We are new to ther area and I had no idea how to randomly choose a hair salon. My daughter had someone suggest Manhattan East. My daughter has a very specific haircut and is fairly picky about her hair. We went to Manhattan East and were greeted by a super nice man, offered a drink and were taken care of immediately and made an appointment. When we returned for my daughters appointment - Monique talked to us both about what type of haircut my daughter wanted and she really listened to her. I was offered a drink while I waited in a comfortable waiting area and everyone was super friendly. The owners spoke to me and helped me with information about the area. My daughter LOVED her hair and said that Monique talked to her a lot about different hair style options. She was very happy. I am very happy. Super friendly. Easy to get to. A + all around. It's such a comfort to know that we have found a place to go for haircuts. read more
