Classic Irish pub with great, affordable food. Highly recommend giving it a try if you are in the area.

Going to an Irish Pub I dont expect much but cold beer and some good tunes. When I went on Saturday night, the beer was indeed cold but you could hear a pin drop! Having actually been to Ireland I can say this place is as close to authentic Irish food as Taco Bell is to authentic Mexican food. The shepherds pie was frozen in the center and the chicken fingers were like bricks. Honestly they could've been used in building Donald Trump's wall. On top of that the waitstaff seemed more interested in socializing than providing service. I almost choked trying to get some water by sucking on an ice cube. I ordered the grilled salmon with a red bell pepper sauce. It came with rice with corn and peas mixed in it and broccoli. The grilled salmon started off well as the far end of it seemed to be slightly crispy on the outside but still maintained a decent texture inside. I gave up on the salmon once I got to the middle as it was obvious it was either overcooked or just not fresh to start with. So I moved on to the broccoli which was by far the saltiest thing I have ever tasted. The first thing that came to mind was the ocean -while drowning. I picked at the rice for awhile because it was identifiable. There was probably one other couple in the restaurant and one gentleman at the bar, so the kitchen was not slammed. The place smells old and musty the moment you walk in. For a second I thought I had mistakenly walked into one of Somerville's antique stores. As far as Irish pubs go this was a big disappointment. Fish and chips were greasy and not appetizing. Crab cake sandwich was fair at best. The decor was run down and more like a man cave basement than a proper Irish pub. Sad that it wasn't nicer. I've heard about this place for years and was looking forward to finally getting there. After three stops at Mannion's, two things stand out. 1:Their musical act have always been good and well suited performers for a pub. 2: It's a good place to drink. I would have liked to try their food, but to date all that I've had are beers and martinis. A side order of fries is an amazingly difficult thing to do at Mannion's. They serve fries on their menu, but since it's not an appetizer or a side option they won't do it. I've been told their menu is fixed and that the staff is powerless with the kitchen in this regard. As for the beer and martinis, beer is beer and the martini was very good. It was light on the vermouth and not too dirty. read more

What a classic Irish Pub! I had a chance to eat downstairs and visit their Sports-bar upstairs called the Clubhouse and both were perfect. You can tell that the Pub was brought directly from Ireland as it had the right beer on tap served at the perfect temperature. It was also the perfect atmosphere to have an enjoyable meal. I recommend the Coley's Irish Stew! At the bar upstairs there was a part atmosphere. There was a great mix of young and old and everyone was friendly. There were enough TVs that you were able to watch a bunch of games, but not so many that it distracted from the music and fun. read more

HORRIBLE!!! Went on a Tuesday night. Not busy. Horrific Service. Worst waiter I've ever had. Appetizer was 35 mins and we had to remind him. Missed two meals, half the party was done by the time the missing meals were brought. Had to pour our own water, had to clear our own table. Screwed up order. Food was sub par. The service will keep us from ever coming back. We never complain but this was seriously so bad, we felt obligated. read more

When one walks into this place you are immediately overwhelmed with the stench of MOLD ! I'm not sure what the source is or why they can't abate it, but it is horrible! We came in at 7:00 on a Friday Cruise night and there were four people at the bar and only one table occupied in the dining room.... Perhaps the MOLD issue is the reason why. Luckily there was no one there to greet or seat us, and we were able to escape without having to give an explanation. The interior looked very nice in the typical Irish pub style. I noticed a few craft beers on tap along with Guinness and Smithicks and I'm assuming it has the standard Irish pub food. The fact this that this place was virtually empty on a Friday night when every other bar and restaurant in town had a wait speaks volumes....what a waste. read more

I love this place! I never have to wait for a table, the food is good, and the staff is friendly. They have an ENORMOUS cobb salad with filet mignon that is delicious. My father was also extremely happy that when he ordered a rare steak it was actually rare. That's pretty "rare" these days. ha! They also have great live music! read more

This is really 2.5 stars, but I'll give it 3 since they do pour a nice pint of Guinness. The wings are very good, the burgers are generally okay, but the quality is inconsistent. Sometimes the burgers are pretty good, other times they are greasy, soggy ickburgers. The shepherd's pie is good, not great, again inconsistent in quality. A few days ago, the fiance and I went there to grab a bite to eat and a drink. We had the wings, which were very good. Big and flavorful. He got the steak/shrimp combo and I got the fish and chips. His steak was thin, small and grey and the shrimp was dry. My fish and chips was just awful. The first piece of fish I tried was horribly done, a gross mess, over cooked and exceedingly greasy. Yes, I know it's fried, but the fish itself shouldn't be greasy and should be flaky yumyum. I tore it apart trying to find a tasty bite, but couldn't. The second piece was better, but not good, by any stretch of the imagination. It made me sick to my stomach, literally. Our waitress wasn't very good. It was pretty crowded because it was halfway to St Patrick's Day, but she forgot to bring the fiance a Guinness that he ordered and then we had to wait about 20 minutes to get our check. That all being said, Tatiana is a wonderful bartender and she makes it worth the trip. When I go there just to have a drink and wings, I'm rarely disappointed. I also like that the Willie Lynch Trio (an awesome Irish band) plays there a lot, and that there are Irish step dancers and bagpipers on special occasions. I went to Mannion's this summer and I had a great experience. It was a Saturday night and not too busy, but my service was excellent and the food came out quickly. I got the Olde Irish Fish & Chips and they tasted very fresh and the steak fries that came with it were crisp and yummy. A band was playing and I'm not sure of the name, but the music was a nice touch to my dining experience. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the bread. I like getting warm bread to start off but this bread was not warm at all. Not a big deal really. Was hoping for a Sam Adam's Seasonal beer on tap but there wasn't any. Lots of beer selections though and a good variety of irish beer. I will definitely come back! read more

The bartenders are fantastic. There are maybe 2 decent menu items. The owner clearly cheapskates out wherever he can and doesn't appreciate his amazing bartenders. All in all... stop in, have a shitty glass of wine, tip the bartenders well, and go somewhere else to eat. read more

Absolutely love Mannions. Not enough places have all Guinness products on tap, and the fact that they do is absolutely phenomenal. I haven't had much in the way of food other than burgers, but I do love the burgers at this place. Outdoor seating in warmer weather makes for a great outing for lunch or dinner...and depending on the time, you may see a streetwalker or two appear out of surrounding buildings off to their "shifts". We recently moved into the area and have slowly been eating at the local eateries. We ate at Mannion's and found our night out lacking. The inside smelled stale, the wall paper was peeling and the ceiling looked like it was buckling. The "manager specials" were written on a lined piece of notebook paper and placed on our table by the unsmiling hostess. Our paper placemats showed interesting places to visit in Ireland, but it seemed a little juvenile. We order potato boats that tasted old and burned- not good. My husband ordered corned beef and cabbage. The cabbage and potatoes were okay but the beef was dry and under seasoned. I order the shepherds pie which was burned on the top, had too much rosemary and the meat had not been trimmed or drained. The only nice thing was that the server was at least attentive even though she didn't smile either. We will NOT be going back read more

I LOVE Irish restaurants / bars but I will never go to Mannions again. After giving it threes attempts over the past couple of years, I have given up. The food is terrible, waitresses are terse and borderline rude and the dank/dark environment not conducive to a cheerful Irish establishment. Wow, tough crowd !!! Glad I didn't read the reviews prior to stopping in with the Sis. Back story -- been going here since it was the NewsRoom, or the Snooze as it was called by the Newspaper folk who dominated the bar. Back in the day, it was THE place for a burger and beer. Stopping in the other week with the Sis, was part of my walk down memory lane. Granted the restaurant and bar was near empty of this very cold and windy eve. Our Server was great, absolutely great. Pleasant and helpful without being pushy, and invited us to stay as long as we wanted when told we might camp out for quite a while. The food was good, hot, and served to temp. Prices cheap. If you want a hopping bar atmosphere, I'm sure there's better out there, but for a burger, and a bowl of Irish Stew, it was A-OK in our book Thanks for the Hospitality !!!! read more

Really disappointed. I wanted to like this place because it looks like a cool traditional Irish Pub inside but the food was awful. I give it one star for having Harp on tap. I ordered one of the specials, Bangers and Mash. Unfortunately it tasted as bad as it looked. The gravy was luke warm with a film on top served in a small plastic cup, the "bangers" were 4 small "Mrs Jones" style breakfast sausages, and the mashed potatoes were just standard fare. The ambiance consisted of dead quiet with no background music unless you consider the ventilation fan noise that kicked on and off every 10 seconds and the gentleman that sat two tables down belching. 100% BEST PLACE TO EAT & DRINK IN SOMERVILLE!!!! Came to Mannion's on St. Patrick's day. The service was amazing. The food was amazing (even the cabbage soup!). The server Kelly was excellent and would request her again (and you should too!). We followed up our dinner by going up to the club house afterwards. It is nice to sit at the bar and get a few drinks. During St Patrick's day it was crazy but the rest of the year it is a great place to meet friends for drinks! read more

Walked in to a waft of musty old stank. 7pm on a Saturday and not ONE, not ONE person eating. Clue number one that I should have turned around. Few people at the bar though. Ordered the corned beef and cabbage. It's an Irish restaurant, right? So how could they screw up that simple dish? Well, they did. Beef was very dry and completely flavorless. Lots of salt and about a gallon of Gouldens and I was able to get it down the hatch. The cabbage had an odd smell of clams. Did they cook it in clam water? Or was this some new found sea cabbage?? I cook corned beef at home and it's to die for. You would think I could get it better in a restaurant; more so an Irish restaurant! Other people in the group had fish and chips. Fish was completely overcooked and the fish shrunk inside the hard casing. Not palatable. On the good side, server was friendly. Decor in the pub side is decent, nice ceiling. Drinks were on par. Never again, this was my second and last attempt. Spending hard earned money on better food elsewhere. read more

Somerville needs a good pub. If it had one the business would rock. This dump is not one. Food is pretty gross. I got a burger and somehow even that was gross. The atmosphere is even worse. The place is not well lit, looks filthy and smells like a bathroom. My beer was warm and flat. Someone needs to buy this place out on the cheap, completely gut the inside and create a fresh new menu. read more

First, a quick note to start this review. I have NEVER had the food here. Ever. I have drank here. The beer selection is good enough and the bartenders are friendly. Wait....I think I had some fries once when I drank too much...maybe I have eaten here... Anyway. What I really love about this place is the crowd that hangs out here. This is the friendliest bar in New Jersey. Every time I have been there I have made friends with someone. The vibe in this place is relaxed and the music isn't so loud that you can't hear your friends talking to you or make friends with the guy sitting next to you. I've grown up going to this place since it opened I think around when I was 8 or 10 (maybe circa 1996?). My parents would eat here and the food was always meh. Then we had a family friend who played in an Irish band that would regularly perform here about 10 years ago. Eventually she held her daughter's sweet 16 here and then this same girl eventually worked here as a server. Now that I've come home after graduate school my friends and I go here since it is a somewhat central location and we do like Guinness a lot. This past Saturday night four of us had dinner and sat at a booth. Our server was a bit rude and terse with us even though we didn't ask for anything special or any modifications (I know how to deal with this-I've worked as a server at two restaurants before). Then after we settled the bill 2 of my girlfriends went up at different times and bought 2 shots at a time-one for one of themselves, one for one of us. I then went up to do the same, and the bar was FULL of OLD PEOPLE-everyone was at least 45 years old. A great majority were in their 50s, that was the average I would say...some in their 60s like my parents!!! (Weird!) Now, I understand central Jersey doesn't really have many young professionals. But I was put off by how intense and aggressive these older patrons were-fighting to buy drinks from the three over-taxed bartenders. It made me feel like I was in a college bar all over again, except for the fact that I was battling for the attentions of the bartender amongst much older customers. In addition to this, the band was not all that great, and they were not singing any traditional Irish ballads-it was mostly some recent pop rock selections, but since they were not that skilled at projecting their voices, hard to discern. This made speaking with one of the bartenders even more difficult. After about 15 minutes, I the one female bartender on duty came over to me. I told her I wanted to buy 2 shots and she said she needed to see all my friends' IDs and have them come up to the bar. I said "ok" and simply returned to my friends, told them what happened, and asked to leave. I was appalled and offended. I definitely do look super young for my age-often people have thought I am skipping school, when I explain that I am in my mid 20s-but this was absurd. Having the whole table come up to accompany me when I request a purchase of 2 shots? I think you may have just lost my business for good now. It is a real shame because Somerville needs a place like this and Mannion's has real potential. But I think I would just rather prefer to drive further to either Morristown, New Brunswick, or up to North Jersey somewhere. read more

Can we give this NO STARS? We took a chance and ventured in to try some good brews and irish food. 1) BONE in the classic cheeseburger (we were told to expect this as it is pre packaged... by the manager) 2) COLD rueben sandwich (no help) 3) 2 EQUALLY GREASY shepherds pies.. tasted like DOG FOOD. we decided maybe German Shepherd Dog food should be the new title of this entree. The only "sorry" we could get was free dessert? Not even a sorry - just pure defensive attitude. We were treated with disrespect and hostility after kindly asking to speak to a manager.
