Stopped at mansion society for a coffee and was surprised that there was a coffee shop inside of an apt complex, but the coffee shop itself was very cute and had ample parking. FYI to those who may have a physical handicap the prevents climbing steps, there are 2 sets of steps to enter the building, I didn't see any handicap accessible entry when I went there. The area to order coffee was really small and could comfortably fit about 5 people in the line inside the ordering station. There were places to stand in the foyer to wait as well, but in my opinion even though there is an open space in the foyer you could be potentially blocking someone's walking space since the ordering station is next to the entrance and the seating areas are in the entryway. I ordered their seasonal From the Past Latte w/ matcha and whole milk. They mentioned that the wait time to receive the drink was 10 minutes, which was understandable with how busy they were, but to my surprise I actually received my drink in half that time. The drink tasted great and if I was still in the area I'd go there again. I definitely noticed for such a small space, the staff were efficient and moved quickly to get everyone their correct orders. I saw this coffee spot as a top hidden gem so my pig and I ventured out to check it out on a random Sunday. Cute place however I was a bit thrown off upon arriving. It is an apartment building. I didn't do my research prior but learned that it used to be a psych ward. Kinda cool. I got their seasonal coconut lavender latte and a signature Sammy. The drink was great, the sandwich took way too long to prepare (we're talking 30 minutes, no joke). I was only annoyed bc I was so hungry, other than that- I didn't care about the wait bc I had nowhere to be. My new favorite place!! A true hidden gem. They're located on the first floor of the Central State Mansion apartment building. The vibe/style of the cafe is my favorite! I'm so glad I finally went to Mansion Society! This place is amazing we had the chicken pesto croissant and the cappuccino there and took a bunch of pastries to go. I came in a friend on a Saturday afternoon with a friend before our tour at the Medical History Museum. I didn't realize they had such a wide range of food or I would have showed up hungry. This is the second time I've been in. I appreciate the antique decor and the welcoming vibe. I love finding places where I can work on things. The large tables are really helpful to be able to set up a computer and notebook. Food and drinks are brought out to you on trays. I can tell there is a lot of care put into things. There are alcoves for seating areas and each one is slightly different. I always love a good wall paper. This stop I got a Mon Cheri Latte with oat milk, The Goat sandwich, and a carrot cake loaf. Second time getting a flavored latte and they do tend to make them sweet! The Goat was delicious and a solid choice for a full early lunch. The carrot cake loaf was good but a little dry. The staff are very friendly but don't be in a hurry. I feel like this is a place to enjoy yourselves. I do wish the water was more self serving but overall I definitely see myself coming again. It was busy on Sunday but that's expected anywhere. They take your order to your table. There's plugs along the seating areas for working. I just visited Mansion Society for the first time & it is now my new favorite coffee shop in all of Indy. A couple of things that sold me: 1) I love how they have options for people who prefer other things than coffee AND food -- I got their Carrot Cake Chai Latte which was the perfect blend of spice and milk & had the All About the Egg Croissant which was also so yummy! 2) The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and quite personable! 3) I also like studying/reading in armchairs instead of at a table and they had a whole room of couches and cozy chairs! (As well as the usual tables-- space for everyone!) The prices were a little higher than others but I felt like the quality and size matched it, so it was definitely worth it! I know people have already used the phrase "diamond in the rough," but it's the truth. The area itself is magical with historic buildings sprinkled throughout, one in particular dating back to 1899. The café is on the first floor of an apartment building, called the Central State Mansion. The staff are very friendly, patient, and helpful. The drinks are handcrafted by their meticulous baristas. I ordered the Spicy BLT. An absolutely perfect level of heat from the arugula and spicy mayo, balanced nicely by a nice slice of tomato and somewhat thick-cut bacon. All gathered perfectly by a fresh and crunchy french roll with a side of potato chips. It paired well with a bottled Coke. Mansion Society is one of my fav coffee shops. Not only is it Latina-owned, but the food, vibes, and drinks are amazing! They always have a variety of food options, too. From bagels to pastries to donuts to sandwiches, there is always something available for breakfast, lunch, or snacks. I've tried a variety of hot and iced drinks that are well-crafted, flavorful, and worth the money spent (usually with lavender !) I also love that they're among one of the only places that serve plant-based bacon and I can enjoy a tasty BLT sandwich. Just delish! The space is comfortable to enjoy a coffee alone, do some work, catch up with a friend, or even a nice first date. My personal FAV is that they're pup friendly! They have pup treats and all. I've heard many many great things about this shop however after traveling all the way from California and a 45 minute drive from my hotel, I found this coffee shop closed regardless of set hours on website, yelp, and instagram. The phone number is also disconnected. Also it's located inside a residential building with a code locked door. So while trying to figure out what to do next we uncomfortably stood by the locked door until some nice residents came out let us know the cafe was supposed to be open but they were randomly closed today. Would've been nice to be informed or even a sign to be hung. Don't waste your time like they wasted mine. read more

This place is now one of our favorite coffee shops. The charm of old architecture and vintage glassware/plates/accents in the shop make it unique and elegant. We tried chicken salad pitas and biscoff lattes (not on the menu). The coffee tasted great and chicken salad pita was hands down the best chicken salad dish I've tried in the Midwest. Coffee was on the pricier side ($7 a cup) but the pita was well worth $13. I also have to mention the staff were very friendly and quick. The place is big enough to accommodate a few dozen people and parking wasn't an issue at all. You can sit outside on benches or choose one of the rooms with sofas inside. There's also a pool with lounge chairs behind the building but it seems to be only for those living here. Lastly, there's more to see in the area and you can walk around the historic site and even visit the medical history museum which is steps away. Overall, great experience and I highly recommend this coffee shop. read more

I'd toured the refurbished Central State grounds a couple of years back and was fascinated by what's been done with the place. It's now something of a commune and I could see the appeal of if you're looking for somewhere affordable and unique to live. I hadn't tried the coffee shop. But we were in the area and decided to give it a try for lunch. Unfortunately, they were out of the chicken salad, which is what we both wanted. But the sandwiches we did get were prepared very fresh and presented quickly by our friendly servers. The atmosphere was unique and inviting, and I really enjoyed the selection of macarons. I had always wanted to try this place out and my husband and I finally stopped in the first weekend of August (I'm a little behind on leaving reviews this month). The outside is beautiful and is an apartment complex (the coffee shop is inside to the immediate left in the lobby), but formerly was the now historic central state psychiatric hospital. I was a little taken aback by the overwhelming aroma of weed + cigarettes upon entering the building instead of the expected coffee + pastries aroma you smell in coffee shops. I guess that is the downside of having a coffee shop in an apartment complex. Dogs are welcome here, so I was excited to try it out and see if they were good so we could bring the dogs with us next time (we were out running non-dog friendly errands, so they didn't join us). The woman working inside the coffee shop was really nice and gave us plenty of time to decide on what we wanted to order since we had never been in before. We both ordered a seasonal latte from the chalkboard next to the register. I got the "With Love, Lou" and while it was really good, I realized later after we got our receipt that they charge an extra $1 for oat milk (they did not have almond milk as an option, which is what I like to get in place of regular milk) an an extra $3 to make a seasonal latte. My husband got an iced "Loverboy" (again with oat milk, so another $4 up-charge) because that is what she recommended in place of a caramel latte, which they did not offer. We thought it was weird that a coffee shop did not have any caramel syrup/sauce and she said they make everything in-house and did not have that. My husband's coffee was sickly sweet and we were not able to drink it and ended up slitting mine instead. We had to dump his out when we got home later in the day. We would both recommend the "With Love, Lou" though! The hazelnut surprise was our favorite pastry we got to try. The filling was evenly distributed and it had great flavor and a fun shape. The Nutella croissant had all of the Nutella filling on only one side, so it made splitting it in half difficult and it ended up oozing everywhere while we were trying to eat it in the car on the way to the grocery store. I would not recommend eating this on-the-go. It was very tasty and I would get it again to just have by myself and eat there or at home. I have always wanted to try Japanese cheesecake and we got a slice of that as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but my husband was not a fan. We also saw on our receipt that every single item we purchased was charged an extra $0.15 to have to-go, which isn't a lot, but we had never been there before and she never told us that, so it was annoying to see it after the fact. I think I would come back here to read a book with the some friends and have a coffee for there, but I wouldn't go back to get anything to-go. read more

After hearing about this place, I was excited to check it out but the service can only be described as awful. Things seemed to be very busy behind the counter and disorganized. I ended up waiting 40 minutes for a drink and my friends who ordered before me waited even longer. There was no apology or explanation for the delay. I got an apple chai drink and it had a weird flavor and aftertaste, so I ended up getting a hot chocolate which was nothing special. After complaining about the wait time they did eventually apologize when the second drink came out and just said "oh we're busy." I'm not sure if staffing is the issue or if there are others, but I did not feel appreciated as a customer or like the staff was customer-focused. 40 minutes is ridiculous for a wait. read more

Just a few miles west of downtown near the Haughville neighborhood, Mansion Society is located inside a historic building on vast greenspace where a hospital used to operate. Currently, the building with Mansion Society has communal-style apartments. The owners are a trio of a mother and two daughters who have done an incredible job with decor, customer service, and seasonal menus. The menu has drinks like coffee, mocha, lemonade, etc. all with fun syrup options. For food, you can grab either smaller pastries or order a larger sandwich with sides. I cannot say enough about the styles of dishes, wallpaper, and posters that elevate the ambiance to a chic but quaint and casual coffee shop. The Matchacita drink (matcha with rose and vanilla) is one of my favorite matcha options in Indianapolis. Their drinks can be hot or iced, and you can request pat or whole milk. Although I went on a Saturday afternoon, the place was not too crowded and the wait was not long. Prices are reasonable. If you drive there, you'll enter the parking lot under the old archway for the Central State Hospital entrance. Parking is free on the grounds of this old hospital, which closed in 1994. The Indiana Medical History Museum is nearby as well as a wedding venue. Many of the old buildings have been torn down, but the remaining historical architecture is gorgeous. This neighborhood is currently growing with brand new apartments and condos and has been a hub for authentic cuisines from around the world. read more

Such a fascinating history to the building! It definitely does have a refurbished hospital vibe but the coffee shop is so well decorated that it's not too noticeable.
