    Tri-tip sandwich

Wow. This place used to be really good. The sandwiches are so thin now. Almost no meat all. The barbecue sauce is very salty and water down. It's not even barbecue sauce anymore. It's more of a marinade.

On the way back form some wine tasting in Hollister... I spot form the corner of my eye a Food Truck with two massive mobile Grills producing some glorious smoke that would make any metatarian proud and some people waiting in line. Quick turn the car around...must seem like a good idea. I didn't bother reading reviews...sigh. The ratings are spot on It's just OK. ~ TRI-TIP SANDWICH - 2/5 Nothing special about the Tri-Tip Sandwich, not to mention it's on the smaller side as far as portions go. It gets a lot better when you add the BBQ Sauce they give you. I'll pass on stopping by here again.

    Too much smoke.
    Maria G.

The amount of smoke coming off their tent is intense and noxious. We wanted to order but literally got smoked out of the line. Eyes tearing, and we weren't the only ones. Several people around us were either coughing or trying to get away from the thick plume of smoke. Felt bad for the other food stalls next to them, everything smelled like forest fire. Is their bbq any good who knows.

Tri Tip Sandwich - $9 for half of what they used to serve

Man, what happened here? I love supporting local business. I loved Mansmiths and went almost every week a couple years ago. Something changed in the past year and a half. The servings kept getting smaller and smaller. I hadn't been back in a bit and today was my first visit in 6 months. Guys, what happened here? What used to be a hidden gem ain't what it used to be. I paid $9 for this sandwich that honestly looks like half to a third of what they used to serve. The quality is still there, I think. I only had a couple pieces of meat in my breadwich to judge. I'm just so disappointed in the size. I recognize COVID has been tough on business but this is just embarrassing. You've got a line of blue collar workers on their lunch break and you're serving them kids meals. You guys can do better! I would love nothing more than to be able to give ya 5 stars.

I recently attended a work event catered by Mansmith's. They came right out to the project site and cooked all the food on location with their great looking truck and grill setup. They brought a pretty good assortments of BBQ'y goods which ranged from very good to average. Here's the scoop: Sides: Potato salad- Pretty average potato salad; nothing great but nothing terrible. I just slathered it in their BBQ sauce and it was all good. 3* BBQ Beans- Above average beans. Their texture was almost perfect & the flavor was pretty good, but I prefer mine to be a little sweeter and a little spicier. 3.5* Garlic Bread- This was the hands down winner for the sides. Nice mellow Garlic flavor with a smooth buttery finish. Excellent! 4.5* BBQ Sauce- They feature two different sauces: Mild and Spicy Beer. I skipped the mild and went straight for the Spicy Beer. It had good sweetness with a nice subtle beer flavor but could've used more spice. It was also a little too watery for my taste. I prefer my sauce to have a little more substance to it. 3.5* Meat: Chicken- The grilled chicken was pretty good. They seemed to overcook it a little bit but almost everyone does these days. I really enjoyed the spice rub they put on it; it had a nice peppery kick to it. 3.5* Ribs- The ribs were very meaty and flavorful but -as my buddy, Alvin D, put it- their texture was a little "tuggy". They needed a little more time in the smoker. 3* Tri-Tip- I think this was the best part of the meal, in my opinion. The Tri-Tip was cooked to a medium-rare perfection and the chef let me have the burnt ends! Score! 4.5* Service- The two individuals running the show were very nice and friendly. They were happy to answer a few silly questions I had about BBQ because I'm always looking for secrets. They also made plenty of food and weren't stingy with the meat; they let you load your plate up fat! I've been to these types of things where they'll give you a sliver of meat and cut up each rib into thirds hoping to stretch out what little they made, but not these guys! 4* Mansmith's team did a good job catering for our event. I can't comment on their cost but I do know that everyone left fat & happy. I vacillated between 3 & 4-stars because while the food was pretty good and the service was excellent I had to side with the food rating. Because, after all, as a wise man once said, "In the end it's all about the food."

The majority of the time "perfection" but there is always those one offs. Seen a small drop off lately but sure it just a hiccup.

The tri tip was juicy and tender, the pork shoulder was super flavorful, and our guests couldn't get enough of the garlic bread!

They were wonderful to work with, from start to finish: very responsive to our initial inquiries, pricing was as expected, and the team showed up on time and was ready to serve food on time. They also packed up the leftovers before they left so that latecomers could still eat. My only critique was that the elotes didn't look like the pic on Yelp. But everything was delicious, and people were going back for more!

While the food eventually arrived, the experience leading up to and during the event was fraught with unnecessary stress. Initial communication was great, but it trailed off as we got closer to the date. Despite their "quick response" phone number, my calls and texts went completely ignored. To make matters worse, the voicemail changed from a personal greeting to a generic one 72 hours before my event, leaving me terrified that we had been scammed. We increased our headcount from 65 to 75 a week prior. After being told this was fine, I was sent an incorrect invoice that ignored the new guest count and asked for a second $300 deposit I had already paid. It took multiple follow-up emails just to get a confirmation on the final numbers. On the day of, the staff arrived promptly and set up on time. However, only 30 minutes into service--with only 30 of our 75 guests fed--they completely ran out of cilantro, onions, and grilled peppers. When I followed up the next day, they claimed they prepared for "70 guests." Even if that were true, it wasn't the 75 we paid for, and it certainly doesn't explain running out of basic toppings after 30 people. I'm incredibly glad we didn't use them for our wedding last year as originally planned. It's disappointing when the service doesn't match the reputation. 2 stars for due prompt service and the guests that got all the food really enjoyed the steak & shrimp.

I stumbled across a pop-up Casas de Humo BBQ (on Instagram @casasdehumobarbecue) which was going to be featured at a local bar in Monterey called Pearl Hour the night before we were heading down. so we changed our plans and headed to Monterey a day early (Thur 6/17), and man was it worth it. THE FOOD WAS AMAZING. Best of the best hands down. the tacos were fresh, the meat melted in your mouth and the salsa was amazing! The brioche bun on the sandwich was fresh; not soggy like other BBQ places serve. On Instagram I saw they make a bbq pork or beef sandwich with a jelly filled donut as the bun called the "Jelly D" which looks ambrosial (check it out yourself on their Instagram. it wasn't on the menu that night so we spotted one of the owners (family run business) and chit-chatted him up and he said they would be featuring the Jelly D Sat 6/19 starting at 12pm at the Joyce Wine Company at 1 E Carmel Valley Rd, Carmel, Ca. so today, we are heading there to dive into the JELLY D and whatever else they have on their menu, because trust me, we are tasting it all! Will update later. Update: the Jelly D was simply Ambrosial (word of the day). We ordered both the brisket jelly D and the pork Jelly D. both were light, flavorful and delicious. Once you pick it up it's hard to put down. The pairing of the Jelly D with Joyce wine company's Gamay Noir wine was perfect match. Casas de Humo Barbecue turned out to be the best adventure of our Monterey weekend getaway that took us to amazing places we may not have ventured without them. Their food was simply amazing and paired well with both places. Cant wait to see where Casas de Humo Barbecue takes us next. We shall see you soon.
