I recently visited Mantra India Restaurant with my friends after hearing a lot about their buffet menu. Unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing, especially for us as vegetarians. The vegetarian main course options were very limited and not up to the mark. The paneer and dal were particularly disappointing in terms of taste and quality. The dessert was good, and the fruits were probably the best part of the starters. However, the self-serve Pani Puri was a letdown - the pani tasted like it was made mostly from store-bought masala powder and lacked the authentic flavor you would expect. We were also never offered naan or roti by the server, and given the quality of the main dishes, we didn't feel the need to ask. I also tried the Mango Mastani, hoping it would be a highlight, but it was extremely sugary and had very little mango flavor. It felt more like a sweet drink with a small amount of mango purée rather than a true Mango Mastani. Overall, I had higher expectations and bad experience based on what I had heard about the buffet, but the vegetarian experience needs significant improvement.

Mantra is easily one of the best Indian buffet spots in the Bay Area right now. The sheer variety of options they manage to pack onto the line is impressive, and unlike many other buffets, the quality doesn't take a hit just because they're serving at scale. Everything feels fresh and well-seasoned, making it a standout choice if you're looking for a reliable, high-quality lunch in Mountain View. What really sets it apart is how well it caters to everyone; whether you're strictly vegetarian or a meat eater, there is a massive selection for both. Oh and their dessert selection is always top-notch and naan are fresh, soft and buttery.

Came here with some friends for ayce lunch and the spread was amazing! So much food to choose from at such a reasonable price! They even have a few chinese food dishes to choose from to give you a little bit of variety. All the dishes were great! Loved the naan bread they give you when you sit down. It's a nice restaurant with a classy feel and the waitstaff is courteous with filling your water glass. Next time I'm with friends craving Indian food I will definitely make the trip to this spot!

On Castro Street in Mountain View, surrounded by a variety of food options - a solid spot for Indian food. We went in on a weeknight and were seated right away. The restaurant was about 50% occupied. We got a manchow soup which evoked memories of Indian Chinese and was perfect for a cold and rainy evening. We followed it up with lamb seekh kebabs, chicken peshawari kebabs and butter naan. The kebabs were served on sizzler platters which kept them warm while we ate them. A great combination, good service and good for a liesurely conversation with friends. Will come back if I'm craving Indian food while in the area!

Came back again for their lunch buffet. Great selection of both vegetarian and non vegetarian options. Clean and food was well heated. Fresh naan brought to table. Note that chai is not included in the price. Good option for weekday lunch Indian buffet.

Asparagus cheese tikki was good! Quite crispy. The pav bhaji is a bit in the spicy side. The malai paneer is great. The kachcha aam drink was a bit bitter, will try the pan next time. The star of the show was our server "Joy". He was helpful, attentive and prompt. Really appreciated the service. The outdoor seating area was great too!

Indian buffet AYCE on Castro street in Mountain View $40/person for special event holidays. I came on Mother's Day and despite being crowded the wait wasn't long. They have nice outdoor seating as well with Dosa grill. They have mocktails for special events but they are not good, the flavors are weird. They also do not have gulab Jamin. I do like their butter chicken tho and it's not too spicy. Overall I would come here again because it's a good location and I like buffet style.

    Rasmalai
    Tannu S.

The service was friendly and the ambiance casual; however, the experience ultimately fell short. While the North Indian flavors were decent, they felt overpriced for what was offered. Before ordering dessert, I specifically asked for a recommendation and was assured multiple times that the rasmalai was prepared in-house and highly recommended. After the first bite, it was evident that the dessert was from a frozen source. Toward the end of the meal, the server acknowledged that it was indeed taken from a frozen box. This lack of transparency was disappointing and undermined the overall experience. Despite the acceptable food, the absence of honesty makes it difficult for me to recommend this restaurant or consider returning.

All you can eat India buffet at Mountain View downtown. We made reservation earlier for lunch. It was busy when we arrived.. The restaurant is not that big. It has very narrow walkable area in between table which make it a bit difficult to walk around. Same with the area to get the food. There are plenty choices of dishes to choose from. It has vegetarian, chicken and mutton. It is interesting they have veggie briyani and mutton briyani but no chicken briyani. The briyani are yummy. Tandoori chicken is also yummy. They also have one chinese chicken dish. The veggie also good.

Excellent Indian Cuisine in this popular restaurant here on Mt. View's busy Castro Street. Not a tourist trap, as we saw tons of locals here. Not your usual Indian place either, with many special dishes with their unique take on things here. We came here on a very busy Friday Evening with the German Christmas Market happening just a couple of blocks up. Service was prompt and friendly, but the kitchen was understandably a smidge slow by maybe 5-10 minutes for our dishes to come out because they were so overwhelmed.. It was loud inside with so many tables filled to the brim with talkative people like us! LOL We ordered several items, of which the "Chaat Samosa" from their appetizers ("Streets of India" section on the menu) was the total standout for me. Think of this as a "deconstructed Samosa", with chunks of tender spiced potato chunks and different chutneys all mixed together with Samosa shell pieces all together on a plate. Totally Yummy. Garlic and Plain Naans - on point, tender on the inside, ever so slightly crisp on the outside, and not super-burnt up like you see elsewhere sometimes. Classic Chicken Curry - On point if you are ok with some spiciness. We ordered "No splcy" but for us, it was still a bit too spicy, so we had to order some Mango Mostanis - which are a nice take on your traditional Mango Lassi, but better! Basmati Rice - on point and good. PRO TIP: When finished, don't flag down your waiter.. Just pay at the front counter on your way out like a Diner! Mantra India is definitely worth coming back to if I am in the area again.

The food is amazing! The butter chicken was fantastic, definitely worth trying. My family has been going here for years and the quality is always great, plus Romaldo is the best!

A solid Indian restaurant option when you find yourself in Mountain view downtown. I came here without reservation on a Saturday evening with a group and we had to wait for about 15 minutes. Their service is pretty good and fast. We had kids with us and they were accommodating of the requests. For appetizers, we ordered the Tandoori sampler and paneer tikka. I enjoyed the paneer tikka, the paneer was juicy and perfectly cooked. Both the dishes came with a side of 2 dips which wrrw good too. The Tandoori sampler came with few pieces of lamb, shrimp and chicken. I liked chicken the most amongst them. For the main course, we ordered Chicken chettinad, hyderabadi bagara baingan and halibut fish moilee. The chicken chettinad was my favorite amongst all the dishes. The flavor of the curry was really good and perfectly spicy for my liking. I went with medium spicy for all dishes. The fish entree was my least favorite, the fish wasn't as delicious and the curry seemed quite ordinary. The baingan was a decent dish although I felt it could have benefited from some flavor in the baigan. All the flavor was in the curry but not so much in the baigan. But the baigan was cooked well. For the breads, I tried both the butter and non butter version of the tandoori roti. Both were good. They have a buffet selection as well and I would be open to trying that out. I think it's a pretty decent Indian restaurant option in the area.

Hunger in the early evening, with a late dinner planned already, meant that I had to pick a place to grab something to eat. Lamb chops is my weakness, and I found them in the menu for Mantra, so I walked in there. The lamb chops were ok, and the tikkis were good. The old-fashioned was surprisingly good. I ended up eating more than I planned, and the dinner had to be lighter, but it was worth it. The service was good and the ambience was nice.

At first I thought that tiffin will be enough for us but then my kids quickly gobbled the idli and mini dosa and wanted more. So I ordered another plate of only idlis( has 3 big soft fluffy ones) and also took advantage of the happy hour to order a masala dosa for me. I am not the kind of mom who eats kids leftovers all the time. So I wanted my own dosa. For drinks, I did a medium strong filter coffee ( they make it to your customization and I was surprised to see they even had jaggery). My 9 year old took a mango lassi. Food was incredibly satisfying. Servers are very attentive and they came three times to our table offering more chutney and sambhar. We already had enough but if you like more sambhar and chutney with your food, this is heaven. One server even came with ghee for my little ones for idlis. I was so grateful. He was genuinely sweet to my kid. Felt a connection than just a business! Ambiance is classy and relaxed at the same time. Nobody gave me the side eye when my three year old was a little noisy. Have a corner for takeout containers for leftover food, very generous. I would highly recommend this place for its delicious food, relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. Prices are reasonable. They have happy hour daily from 3-6 pm and when we went at 5.30, the restaurant was more than 70% full on a Thursday. Eat early and save money too. We really had a very good time! The dosa is crisp and the fermented flavor is delicate. The filtered coffee is popular so I had to try it, and I love it. I'm not sure everyone would like it though. It's a strong coffee, slightly bitter even with sugar. The milk is poured with a long pull to create foam. The foam is light, not creamy or velvety like a latte. It's a very small portion in a small cup, and it's HOT, very HOT. I like it but I can see how other people might not. I was confused the first time I went in to eat because seating and ordering is not typical. When you first walk in, you go to the host and they'll give you a number then you walk to the room to your left to order and pay. You're given a chip if you order a coffee or tea and move over to the right. You give your chip to the person preparing the drinks for you. They ask your preference and hand over the very HOT drink. Then you sit at the table with your number on it. Your food is brought over fairly quickly. They bring extra sambar and chutney if needed, no extra charge. The dosa comes filled with turmeric spiced potato and on the side chutney (not my fave) and sambar which is so so good. You break a little dosa and dip and or scoop some of the sambar/ chutney. It's a casual setting and it gets pretty busy, especially on weekends. There are a ton of these types of restaurants and I'm pretty certain I've found the best one here!

Tonight I was craving a home style chicken and rice dish similar to what my mom makes . Now I know it's not possible to get that from a restaurant, but the closest to that is the Donne biryani preparation that a few places offer in the Bay Area. So I looked up Yelp and found this spot. The fact that it already had 4.9 stars was reassuring but I didn't put too many expectations on it. But what I did was call the place and make sure they'd be open by the time I made that 28 mile drive. I spoke to a person named Sagar who took my order and told me to take my time getting there and drive carefully! Husband and I got there around 9:30pm and it's a cloud kitchen setup with kitchens in the back and a point of sale kiosk and counter at the front. As instructed I called Sagar and he came up to the counter with my food, and also let me know he had added a free dessert since I drove all the way from Hayward . Husband and I got home and immediately dug in and what can I say, the flavors totally took me back to my mom's kitchen. The Donne biryani was bursting with taste, and what made it superb was that the flavors were in balance, with neither the spices nor the aromatics being overpowering in any way. The other dish, the pepper chicken was epic by itself, and should have been enjoyed with a bread of some sort, because the biryani didn't need any accompaniment. As if this meal wasn't divine enough the cherry on top was the pineapple kesari dessert that Sagar kindly added to our takeout bag. Thanks Nalapaka, for a taste of home, away from home !

Some of the best restaurant discoveries happen by complete accident…read more We were actually on our way to AnnachiKarahi when gps informed us it had moved and been replaced by Charminar. While my husband drove, I quickly pulled up the Yelp page. The menu immediately caught my attention, but I'll admit I was hesitant. There were only a handful of reviews, and the ratings didn't quite match the ambition of the menu. Still, Hyderabadi cuisine is one of India's great culinary traditions, and it's surprisingly underrepresented in the Bay Area. Curiosity won. I'm so glad it did. Having visited Hyderabad, I know it as a city obsessed with food, a place where recipes reflect centuries of Nizami, Mughlai, Persian, and Telugu influences. While many restaurants here advertise themselves as Hyderabadi, they often stop at biryani. Charminar embraces the breadth of the cuisine, with everything from mandi and gongura specialties to chicken sukka, Mughlai curries, and, on weekends, freshly made rumali rotis. That alone made me stop and take notice. The restaurant itself is warm and inviting, with tasteful artwork celebrating the Hyderabad cityscape and the iconic Charminar. The staff matched the atmosphere: genuinely welcoming, knowledgeable, and eager to guide us through the menu without ever rushing us. The meal began with refreshing drinks before quickly moving into what became one of the highlights of the evening: the kebabs. The Lasooni Kebab and the Malai Kebab were exceptional. Both were astonishingly tender the kind of tenderness that only comes from patient marination and careful cooking. The Malai Kebab, in particular, was outstanding. Delicate notes of ginger and garlic layered into a creamy marinade, finished with the unmistakable whisper of charcoal smoke, created a kebab that was elegant rather than heavy. It was one of the finest versions I've had in the Bay Area. For the mains, we ordered the Chicken Sukka and Lal Chicken alongside the weekend rumali rotis. Paper-thin, almost like silk, they arrived impossibly soft and stayed that way throughout the meal. Anyone who has searched for authentic rumali roti in the Bay Area knows how rare that is. Too often they become rubbery within minutes. And it's rare to find it on menus so get your hands on it (weekends only!) The Chicken Sukka was my favorite curry of the evening. Layers of roasted coconut, deeply caramelized onions, warming spices, and beautifully cooked chicken came together in a dish that was both rustic and deeply satisfying. The Lal Chicken surprised me. Given the name, I expected assertive heat, but instead found a curry that leaned sweeter and tangier than anticipated. Not a flaw, just a different interpretation than I had expected. And then came the dish that reminded me why Hyderabad occupies such a revered place in India's culinary landscape. The Gosht Dum Biryani. If you visit on a weekend, don't overthink your order. Get it. Anyone can pile onions and masala onto rice and call it biryani. True dum biryani is a lesson in restraint. Every grain of rice should carry the perfume of saffron, whole spices, stock, and meat, without relying on excess seasoning. The rice itself should be compelling enough to eat on its own. Charminar gets this exactly right. Every spoonful was fragrant and beautifully balanced. The lamb was meltingly tender, yielding effortlessly from the bone, while the mirchi ka salan added earthy warmth and the raita brought just enough freshness to complete the experience. It was, without question, the standout dish of the evening and among the better Hyderabadi biryanis I've had in the Bay Area. The most exciting part is that we barely scratched the surface of the menu. Finding a restaurant that doesn't simply borrow Hyderabad's famous name but genuinely celebrates the diversity of its cuisine is rare. Charminar feels like it was built by people who understand what makes the city's food so beloved. What a wonderful addition to Sunnyvale. I sincerely hope the community gives this restaurant the attention it deserves. We'll certainly be back Congratulations to the Charminar team.

We ordered the tandoor package for about 30 guests. These are all medium trays - there was a lot of food leftover (tip to order less than no of guests)- but we were able to give it to our guests and neighbors. And the food- we got so many compliments from our guests! The drinks were mango lassi and mint and lime mojito and the appetizers samosas and paneer tikka were great! Also the three entrees, dal and rice and gulab jamun were great. We also got complimentary milk sweet at the end. Harry also helped us with setting a small garbage to throw our disposable plates and silverware, which was really helpful. Thank you Chaat Bhavan for a memorable and delicious dinner!

My favorites were the Pakoras, Cauliflower Manchurian and the Noodles. First time trying the noodles at an Indian restaurant and reminded me of a spicy chow mein. The Saag Paneer was good. I didn't try the garbanzos because I just had too many of those at recent parties. Overall, it was okay but still I wouldn't come back due to the far location. 45 minute drive is just too far from home for me.
