Mao Laulau is amazing! So this small place across the street from 7-11 is so good. All the food is homemade and fresh daily. They make a couple of different dishes but their Laulau is delicious! The mini plate is my go to order. One laulau, rice and spaghetti noodle (like mac salad) on the side. All for $5.00! It's hard to find a meal for this cheap anywhere in Hawaii, but homemade on top of that is just ridiculous! The dollar drinks are good in case you are thirsty, but beware they do run out of food quickly! I will be back to try to pork guisantes, tripe stew, and chicken papaya.

The pork belly was juicy and soft and with the sauce and fluffy bao buns...they will be something I dream of when we leave Hawaii. Made sure to come here the first night I landed so I did not miss out and could see if it lived up to the hype. It did. It is such a fun place to feel like you are having a picnic. You know this place is good since there is a steady line of people ordering bags and bags of food. Just to say, this is another must-do must-try place for food. We was super excited to have the mixed plate with gravy. It was beef, chicken and fish with rice and mac salad. It was huge and perfect. It tasted amazing and I would order this again and again. We had two of those. We also tried the loco moco and classic dish, and the saimin, which I had always wanted to try. One child also ordered the BBQ pork sandwich which she enjoyed and since it was a small menu item could help with the mix plate, which is impossible to finish in one sitting. I was stuffed and in woman versus food, food won overwhelmingly. I wish I had room to try the slush and ice cream or other items, but I could not eat another bite. So many items on the menu were very tempting and I am sad I only got to visit here one time. I do hope to return and have so many things on my dish wish list, but that mixed plate was so good, I bet I would go with that again.

The four of us shared the loco moco plate, boneless chicken with gravy plate, and the BBQ beef plate. Food was good and hearty. My favorite was the loco moco plate. Some beef slices were dry. Mac salad was good. Overall good place for a cozy classic Hawaiian meal.

The waitress that day was super friendly, full of Aloha! I love the local foods, everything I tried was very tasty, When dining in I usually go with the 2 item plates, picking all different items ( Lau, Kalua Pork, pork belly, chicekn long rice and sharing family style with extra rice. The food was broke da mouth! During one of my dining visits, I was on my no carb lifesytle and got the Island cobb salad with Kalua Pork ( available in 2 sizes $9./$17.) Lettuce, cucumber, corn, tomato, avocado with Kalua Pig, and sweet onion dressing. Wow, I am glad they have this option for salads. I hope they don't discontinue the Cobb salad as it was so good! During this recent stop I picked up the Pork Belly and Pipikaula plate in short ribs style. This was such a great choice as my family enoyed it . The…read moreplan was to take a hike along the way to the coast and then just meander the various spots of gorgeousness of the coastline of that part of the island. The hike worked up my appetite, and so I searched Yelp for nearby places to grab a lunch. I had already been to Kailua, and so this time I wanted to work my way through rural Waimanalo Beach. One of the most interesting places that came up on my search was Keneke's. It served local food and had great reviews, and so I plugged it into my Apple Maps and headed to Waimānalo. My first impression of Keneke's was that it felt more like a place you'd find in the rural countryside of a Caribbean island or Latin American country. I hadn't seen that in Hawaii until I came across Keneke's. You know, the type of place that's been around for years and draws people from far and wide for their good, home-cooked food. As you can see from the picture of Keneke's, the red on the walls makes the place stand out, but everything else about it was a bit confusing. There were two or three windows to place your order...a walk-up kind of place, but it was hard to tell which one to approach. They had old-fashioned wood-frame screens over the windows, which were hard to see through, looking from the sunlight into darkness. And no one called out to me as I stood there, either. It wasn't until a woman inside one of the windows opened the screen and yelled out a customer's name, some young guy playing a ukulele, that I knew where to order. I stepped back from the window as she handed him his food. Finally, she asked me for my order. The woman was very businesslike, and not friendly at all. I placed my order, my first Hawaiian "Loco Moco" with a Dr. Pepper. I waited quite a while for my name to be called from inside the simple concrete, dining room. It was nice and shady, but there were a couple of pesky little flies looking for food. Even though the place was kind of icky and the people weren't so friendly, I was still looking forward to the Loco Moco. You could tell the food would be good from the activity. The place was busy the whole time I was there, so I knew the food was going to be fresh and good. Wow! And I say that in both a good way and a bad way! For those of you who don't know, Loco Moco consists of two hamburger patties served with an egg over white sticky rice and mac salad, all smothered in sumptious brown gravy. Delicious, but a heart attack waiting to happen! You see, good and bad. In all seriousness, the Loco Moco was fresh and tasty, but it was very filling and I couldn't even finish it, which is a shame. Tip: order the Small size! In the end, and knowing what to expect, I'd still stop back at Keneke's. Their food was delicious snd they had an extensive menu. Who knows, maybe next time I'll try their "two quarter-pound deluxe cheeseburgers." Or maybe I'll just have the salad.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.
