I've stopped by before, but ages ago pre-Yelper days. To kill time after dropping off The Homie at UW Seattle campus, I realized this the closest hardware store north of the university (1/4/24). Added later, located west of UW Seattle is Tweedy Popp Ace Hardware in Wallingford. I usually shop at a North Seattle box store and you know how that goes. Try not to run over a scandily clad Aurora streetwalker, hope today's not your day to get carjacked, and once inside power walk the vast aisles without a store associate in sight. I needed particular light bulbs for the dining room chandelier and the refrigerator...I am armed with a mission as I walked in. I am usually a strategic shopper with limited time. I was immediately acknowledged and greeted by an Ace Hardware employee. She knew the exact aisle and location of these specific bulbs. Another associate also chimed in and concurred while we were standing in aisle 13. I walked over to the check-out area and there were three actual folks at the registers. The person that assisted with the transaction was upbeat and pleasant. What no standing in line for self checkout or dealing with a dour clerk? I was in & out in record time. I was absolutely amazed! I guess for many years being a northend homeowner, I was accustomed to lame service from box store orange or box store blue. This Ace Hardware in Maple Leaf also edges out the Ace site in Greenwood, where usually I'm ignored. Maple Leaf Ace is a North Seattle institution and the bedrock of Maple Leaf. It's hard to overstate how awesome this place is. They've somehow figured out every little thing that renters and homeowners in their 5 miles radius will need throughout the year. It's rare that I need to go farther than Ace for a project. Ace had a special promo on Ego mowers with Maple Leaf carrying a nice inventory. I got some sound advice from the staff there and purchased a couple pieces of equipment. Generally these things can get pretty pricey, especially with batteries etc., so I was happy to capitalize on the discounts. Fast forward a couple years and the batteries appear to have lost their capacity. I called up Maple Leaf to confirm warranty coverage and potentially resurrect my receipt. Not only did the human who answered the phone already know the warranty term for the batteries (3 years, yay!), he patched me to the cashier and she went out of her way to comb through their billing history to find my invoice, even emailing it to me and then calling me back to confirm. Usually have really helpful service here but today was something else. Needed some PVC piping help on 6/22/24 around 9AM. Made me feel like an idiot because I didn't know what certain connector pieces were called. Also made fun of me when I asked if he could cut it to size and he said "why don't you have a hacksaw" at home? I don't have a hacksaw because I am a neurosurgeon and I admit I don't know alot about home repair... but if this jerk stepped into my OR I wouldn't assume he had all the tools I needed to do my job. Wow - what great customer service!! I was here during the frenzy of snowpocalypse preparations and several cars coming and going from this tiny parking lot. They had parking attendants directing folks, tons of staff inside helping people, and quick checkout lines. I bought 5 bundles of firewood in case we lose power in the next week and I need to keep myself and my cats warm! I paid and then the lady at checkout let me know I could pull up to door 1 and someone would load all of the firewood into my car for me. Wha?! I was so impressed and relieved at the same time. If you've ever loaded firewood you know that stuff is not lightweight! I went out to my car, drove up to door 1 as directed, showed my receipt, and two guys swiftly delivered my bundles of firewood into my backseat. Thank you so much!! I shop here all the time. The experience here is far and away a better one than driving farther on to Home Depot or Lowe's. The staff are super friendly and helpful. It might be the best customer service in Seattle. And for the size of store that it is, you'll be surprised at the variety and selection here. Sticker prices are more on most things than the aforementioned corporate box stores, but the Ace Rewards program probably evens that out. I went to purchase a filter for my air handler. I was greeted with they're in plumbing, offered no help. Went to plumbing found the one I needed 18x24x1. A employee suggested a different filter 18x25x1. "It's almost the same, less expensive and a lot of people use this one". I paid, exited, went home, it didn't fit. When I attempted to return/exchange for the filter I wanted originally I was told no returns. No signs posted at the time, the cashier never mentioned it at checkout. I was able to return the filter to a different Ace Hardware no trouble at all. This is the third bad experience with this store. All of the employees seem to have a poor attitude. I've been a customer at this Ace for several years and I've typically had a great experience. The employees are obviously loyal employees and are customer focused and knowledgeable. I love that the store is small and easy to navigate, so we try to shop there as often as we can and avoid the larger, corporate stores. It is for these reasons that we chose to buy paint there when redoing our bedroom. We picked up several paint chips from Lowes, Home Depot, Maple Leaf Hardware and another Ace down the street and chose what samples we wanted to purchase from there. One of the colors we chose, was a color from Lowes, but we decided to take it to Maple Leaf Hardware because we'd rather support a small business especially because of the impacts COVID has had. I went to the store and a very helpful employee made up a few samples for me and helped create a sample that matched the Lowes paint chip. I could have sworn they told me to bring my receipt back to get the price of the sample taken off the gallon I purchased, which is a common practice when purchasing paint, but this is where things went very wrong. After putting up the samples, we decided on the Lowes color (Black Magic) for our bedroom. I called on my way to purchase the gallon because I know it can take some time and they were about 40 minutes from closing, so I didn't want to hold things up. I wasn't able to talk to the paint specialist, so ended up talking to the owner about the paint I wanted. After telling him the color he made a strange remark about that being "an interesting color for a bedroom". There was some confusion on the sheen, so I said I was on my way and we could figure it out. I got there and figured out the color and sheen with the owner, but then he asked if this would be an accent wall or if I'd be "living in darkness". It was awkward and unprofessional, but I decided to ignore it. Because they were closing I was given a "dummy" can of paint so I could pay and then return to get my paint. When I got up to pay I produced my receipt from my sample purchase to get the discount I was told I would get. The cashier looked very confused and said he'd never heard of that before and I explained that I was pretty sure the employee the day before and it was a common practice. He went to grab the owner to check and the owner came back and started questioning me about it. I explained *again* what I thought the process was. There were several other people in line and he began to loudly ask every single present employee if they had told me that and they all stoutly announced they hadn't and proceeded to name every employee that worked the day before and that they would never tell a customer that. The owner called the paint specialist who said she hadn't told me that and maybe it was the coupon online that they weren't offering. It was incredibly embarrassing and completely uncalled for. It felt like I was being called an liar or a scammer in front a store full of people. I wanted to disappear. I told him it was fine. I didn't need the coupon. He made a huge ordeal about giving me the discount and told me over and over again that he didn't know any employee who would tell me that. It was humiliating. He rang me up with the coupon and I went to pick up my paint with my head hanging. The final straw was when I went to pick up my paint and the woman behind the counter questioned me about paying. I said I had and she proceeded to call the manager to confirm I did. So on top of feeling already being made to feel like I was a scammer, I was then treated like a criminal stealing from the store. It's been over two weeks and this whole experience is still with me. They could have simply told me they'd honor it, but that there was some confusion and it's not something they regularly do or even said they couldn't honor it and were sorry for the confusion. I would have been fine with either, but it was humiliating and hurtful to be treated like a liar and a criminal in a store that I very intentionally gave my business too. I hope the owner and employees read this and reflect on their actions and chose differently the next time a situation like this occurs. This store has always been good, but has been moving to awesome with more selection and more help (it doesn't hurt that it's looking pretty nice too -- used to be quite drab). Even though the prices can be (but are not necessarily) more than the big box stores, the convenience and help is worth it. You won't find plants or many bulky items, but they do have just about every type of small to medium item you could need for typical home (or school) project. Plus, the main Ace web site (http://AceHardware.com/) has even more stuff and you can often (not always) have it shipped for free to Maple Leaf Ace within a few days. I used to visit a big box hardware store at least monthly because I thought it was saving me money. Now that I have realized how much time I've wasted looking for stuff, not being helped, and standing in line buying or returning stuff, I visit the big store about three times a year. There are lots of friendly people to help at this Ace, and the wait time (if any) in the checkout line is usually very short. Picking up large or heavy items is easy with their help getting items to your vehicle. At Maple Leaf Ace you could probably locate the following items (with assistance) and buy them in under fifteen minutes -- many of these items aren't even stocked at the big box stores: flashlight bulb, Popsicle stick, 15 watt light bulb, doggy chew toy, chemical-resistant gloves, 60 lb pea gravel, 10 lb or 60 lb bag concrete, balsa wood, ABS pipe cut to length, cork stopper, child-size rake, pizza cutter, push mower, wide-mouth Mason jar lids, ironing board cover replacement springs, and garden hose cut to length with top-quality fittings installed. read more

Don't go just before closing time. Usually, the employees are extremely helpful, which is why we went there to find a particular sized screw. We went in at 6:45 (they close at 7:00). We immediately asked someone for help; he said "we are getting ready to close," showed us the bazillion containers of screws and such, and left us. Five minutes later, we asked another worker for help. He said," we close soon," went to the same aisle, and pointed to the screws. Then he walked to the registers to clean up. When I walked by there, frustrated, he asked if I had found what we needed. I said, "no," and he said, "well, we are closing soon." THREE TIMES we were told they are closing soon. If someone had helped us, we could have found what we needed. But they did not, so we did not. We drove to Home Depot and found the correct screws. Super hit or miss depending on who is working. I either leave satisfied or ticked off. There's no in between. If you can, ask for help from the more seasoned folks. The youngsters for the most part suck. I'm a youngster so I get to say that right? Except Brian (at least I think his name is Brian), he's great. One example: we asked if we could bring in wood samples to test stains before buying a whole bunch. A young man responded, "you can, but we're not going to be friendly about it since it's a weekend and we're really busy." Dude, just say no then. After that point it made sense why he was a douche about answering our questions. Obviously we know nothing, it's why we're there, Mr. Condescension. I don't mind the more expensive prices if they're being "helpful folks", but not for snarkiness. I'm going to Home Depot where they don't care, but they also don't falsely advertise about it.
