The owner was incredibly rude when I tried to return a jacket. They don't allow returns at all and during the holidays you must exchange your gifts within a certain date. Today is 1/27 and she said "I'm well outside of the holiday exchange date." So just be cautious knowing that pretty much all sales are final. The clothing is extremely overpriced. This is a locally owned fashion shop in old Oakland what specializes in, just like it says in the name, denim. The difference in comfort and feel of denim bought here versus an off the shelf retailer is remarkable. You'll look a lot sharper, and feel wayyyy more comfortable. The quality of construction is also better so the product will last longer. The downside is of course, that the jeans, shirts, dresses (both mens and womens items are on deck here) and the other items on offer here will cost considerably more then the typical retail store-target, sears et al. Having said that the sale items are reasonable especially given the better cut and quality. I'm not saying I'm gonna go here for all my wardrobe needs, but for a fast casual look that'll last this place is unbeatable. It's a must stop for the classic, well dressed look. read more

I hate trying on clothes. I especially hate trying on jeans. What a quagmire, because I really love wearing jeans! Well, Maple Street Denim is the antidote for people who hate jeans shopping. The owner Julie is a true denim expert, and makes shopping for jeans fun. My husband and I usually end up leaving the store with at least two pairs each. A couple weeks ago, my little sister told me she wanted new jeans, and I told her to go to straight to Maple Street Denim, and she asked me to come. "I don't know if I'm ready yet." I said. I just had a baby about 6 months ago and am pretty much back to my original jeans size, but my body shape changed a bit. Frustratingly, a lot of my old jeans fit weird, and I was dreading the idea of going jeans shopping. But she convinced me to go just to help her choose. Well, of course I couldn't sit idly while she shopped, so I ended up trying on some pairs. Marianne, who was working at the time, helped me with some advice as to which brands were more forgiving, and which brands to size up/down on, etc. It was actually fun! And to my happy surprise, I came home with my very first pair of new postpartum jeans--that are my new favorite pair! Anyway, I am still pretty excited that I get to wear regular pants again that don't have a big wide stretchy maternity waist band. And I'm super excited that I didn't have to sacrifice fashion or quality, or for that matter, my sanity, in procuring them. I came in on a Sunday afternoon, and Julie went above and beyond to help me find a fit perfect for my body type and budget. I received one-on-one attention from start to finish. I was checked on frequently even when the store got packed with other customers. I was happily surprised at the level of customer service I received and left with not only one, but two beautiful pairs of Nudie Jeans. I thought when i traveled to Europe i could find a good retail store that carried a pair of nudies. BUT NOPE NO LOCATION in our travel schedule had them. Luckily i searched on yelp to find a good retailer in the bay that carries nudies, and what do you know maple street came up! I was also going to buy these jeans online, but my only concern was that i wouldn't know what i would be buying in terms of style and what would be the perfect fit for me. Luckily Julie helped me out with the right style and size for me and even convinced me to buy it from her store; instead of online hahahaha! I don't fall for tricks like that but since she was so helpful and basically compared prices online to her shop, it was basically the same and it would actually saved me more money from delivery fees! So everything worked out perfectly fine! And i gotta say i must support your local denim shop! Anyways... although Julie didn't have the style that she recommended me to get, she took the time to order the pair of jeans that she showed me with no extra fee or anything within a week. Basically what more can you ask for in terms of customer service?!?! So thank you Julie you're the best! Came back the following two weeks after, Eden helped me out with the purchase, super chill dude with an extensive knowledge about denim. Was strolling through the neighborhood and came across this boutique. Loved the layout of the store - simple, open space plan. Had a ton of jeans which initially caught my interest. Hubby and I walked in there with no expectation to buy anything. I was drawn to their jewelry. Simple, understated jewelry pieces placed in really cute miniature test tubes. I picked up a gold plated "Oakland" necklace that would make a great present for a girlfriend but decided to keep it for myself. =) I walked over to the jeans section and didn't bother to peruse through. I haven't been in the mood to shop for jeans since nothing currently fits me. I'm short with a growing muffin top and hate spending a ton of money on expensive jeans that makes me feel and look like crap. Julie, the owner asked me what kind of jeans I like - where my trouble zones are. She gave me 2 pairs of jeans to try on - ok, fine, I can make the effort. AND THANK GAWD I DID! The first pair I put on felt like...a pair of socks! It was so comfy, so stretchy, and fit me like a glove but in a very comfortable manner. What are these? JAMES JEAN! Never heard of the brand but the length was perfect on my 5'2" body! Julie gave me the 411 on the brand and I am instantly inlove with these jeans. I'm hoping she will carry more denim colors so that I can add to my collection. =) For now, this pair is on rotation every day. My hubby didn't have any luck in finding a pair but he scored a good looking sweatshirt made of the softest material and the cut/fit was spot on. BEST DENIM STORE IN OAKLAND Ok, I don't usually spend much on clothes but I wanted some good jeans that weren't the basic Levi's that I usually wear so I went into Maple Street Denim just to look around with my wife. Mary Anne was working and she was super friendly. She took the time to show me multiple pairs and styles until we found the right one, with the right fit that fit my budget! Best denim shop in Oakland!! I just bought a pair of Nudie jeans yesterday and I'm in love. I'm looking forward to coming in to buy a few more pairs. I even have a bit of a belly which I'm self conscious about and was able to find a pair I liked enough to buy. I will say, I wish they had more in the way of mid-rise and zip fly jeans (I know terribly un-trendy, but it usually looks better on me because of the belly). But I appreciated the shop assistant helping me so much and having sold vintage denim for some time, I am a denim snob and they knew their shit! I found a pair of high rise, button fly, 90's style, standing-only denim that I am excited to break in. They're the kind of pants that will only get better with age. I got lucky and found a worn out pair of wranglers the same day down the street at Mercy that are probably going to be a new pair of period denim (if you know, you know...straight up slacker style and nothing squeezing your middle) - but that was a stroke up luck. A friend and I were wandering through the area after getting some gelato and I was intrigued by a hot sauce bottle patch I saw through a window (which I ended up getting!). It was probably closing time but we didn't realize that yet so thank you to the super nice cashier and the person who I'm assuming is Julie (the owner) for being extra accommodating and even showed us all of the cute pins and patches they had available. She was working with me and another customer at the same time and she was super attentive to both of us. It was interesting because we had opposite body types---the other woman was long-waisted while I am short-waisted---and she immediately knew what work work for each of us. Wow I downloaded the yelp app specifically just to leave this place one star. I found this place walking around during the farmers market and was really pleased with the selection. At first the employees were great and I walked away with 2 beanies as a gift for a friend. When my friend didn't like the color of one of the beanies I came in to try and exchange the beanie for another color. Without even examining the beanie, one of the workers looked at me negatively -- telegraphing to me that her answer was already a NO. She explained, "we probably can't exchange it sorry." As I pulled out the beanie she said, "look there are no tags and it looks worn." (Of course the tag is detached it was supposed to be a gift) I literally purchased this beanie 24 hours before coming to exchange it for another product in the store. Instead I was met with a highly unwelcoming staff who acted condescending on the way out. If you're looking for good denim shop there are plenty in Oakland. This place came off classist and disruptive to the values of the Oakland community. read more

So here's a little story about this place...I was looking for a cool men's boutique in Oakland and came across this one on Yelp. Made the trek over there and was a bit surprised when I arrived that there literally wasn't another person in the store, given that it is the weekend. I was finishing up a call with a friend I hadn't talked to in years when I entered the store, found a Nudie shirt I liked and went to try it on, and as I'm about to put it on in the dressing room I hear "Can you end your call?". I say hang on to my friend and say "are you talking to me?" and she says "yep". As I walk out I tell my friend what just happened and she was blown away. Solid sales tactic eh!? The f'ing audacity of this woman to ask her customer to end his call, when there isn't another soul in the store. I then go back in and ask if the woman is the owner, and sure enough she is. No wonder there isn't anyone in her shit hole shop! In summary, if you enjoy being treated like a piece of garbage check out this spot! Aside from the owner's terrible presence and attitude, the place had one decent shirt in the entire shop. Have at it! Update: Just read the owners response. A. I did say "hello" back. B. It's up to me, your customer, if I want to have a one-on-one "relationship" with you. C. If there was a single another customer in the store I would have politely ended my call. D.
