WOW. Possibly the best retail establishment of any sort I've ever been to. I came in one day to get my acoustic set up (I'm a guitar noob). George, the owner, took me to his workshop to inspect it. He not only popped a new string on to replace the one I'd broken, but proceeded to spend nearly an hour offering me tips and advice on playing. He even played some classical/Renaissance melodies, which were incredibly beautiful. I didn't even leave until after the store had technically closed. I returned later in the week to pick it up, and ended up spending another 30 minutes with George's son, Lindsay, learning and listening even more. Lindsay also found me a perfect used case for a great price. It's so nice to see family businesses like this, especially in the heart of Buckhead. I had the pleasure of discovering a true gem of a guitar store today. I'm resettling back in Atlanta after 15 years away, in which time I developed a love for guitars. I found a great resource in Maple Street Guitars and their manager Lindsay Petsc. I'm not much of a musician, but I do have a love for great guitars. Lindsay treated me like I was his only customer (store was active with other customers) and listened to me and learned what I liked and set me up with three great guitars to play. There was no pressure and he took time to talk about guitars and share his knowledge. This guy loves what he does and it shows. His customers are fortunate to have this resource. I left with a guitar in mind to add to my collection, but more than that, I know this will be a great place to visit in the future for my guitar needs. I have been fortunate enough to have found Maple Street Guitars twenty years ago. I am a guitar teacher who teaches in-home lessons here in Atlanta to kids who are neurotypical and also kids who have "super powers!" So, let me preface this by saying this review has mostly to do with the attitude of the repair shop guys. I cannot speak to the attitude of the acoustic area which is more than half the store and business (they may be wonderful and angelic for all I know - but I believe the sales people work both sections). I brought a few guitars I was having issues with here to discuss options for getting the tone I have been seeking for years. I was told by another guitar store (believe it or not) that these guys were the go to peeps for a resolution to my quest. Here's what I get whenever I go to Guitar Center or Ken Santon: 99.9% of the time, guys that are super friendly, cool and genuinely excited or at least interested in talking guitars and related equipment. This is over 20+ years in the Atlanta area. The vibe at Maple street is moderate to extreme snobbery. ZERO warm smiley welcome. I actually used to live nearby (within a mile) for 17 years and would pop in every once in a while. Never did I get the warm friendly welcome of other music stores. I almost feel as if I'm at the post office (not that bad though). I'm not saying that a warm smile is a pre-requisite for me to have a positive option of a store but why the heck are you working in a music store if you don't enjoy music? Regardless, while I waited to speak to the repair/tech guys, I interacted with a tall, long-haired hippy lookin dude who was okay. I was trying one of their guitars and an amp that I was genuinely curious about and he was not rude but he was okay but he was rude to another customer who was clearly a beginner. I feel like they were only nicer to me because I am a halfway decent musician. I do not like that. As a small business owner, I treat everyone the same and so do the bigger music stores. Heck, I'm excited at the opportunity to guide a beginner when I get approached at a music store when they hear me play and have questions. By far the coolest dude was about 6 foot tall and his name was Dave or Mark - don't remember which but he had some kind of hearing aid type thing. He was actually excited to discuss guitar stuff. I would buy something from him. Onto the tech guys. The two dudes in the tech section where not only relatively clueless but they were about as interested in discussing options as I am at having to clean the lint trap in my dryer. Actually, less than that. Not only were they limited in their knowledge (which is TOTALLY fine - perhaps a but disappointing but I would have no issues with that, I'm finding few people have answers and I probably need to find a tone specialist who REALLY knows pickups etc. ). It was their awful energy, attitude, vibe. I was fully offering and expecting to pay for the time it took to just explore options and they could not have cared less or been less interested. I felt like I was talking to someone who had to pay a buck for every word that came out of their mouth. I felt as though if you are not a jazz or classical musician, you are a chump in their eyes. I got FAR more input (worthwhile too) from the cool sales dude I referenced earlier. I should also note that an older woman came by while I was waiting to talk to the tech guys and she was pretty nice. But it feels as if they just tolerate the electric section and can't wait till the people trying out guitars or amps finish. In short, my experience with the sales people was the same as its always been, most are not enthusiastic and most don't seem to enjoy being there with a few exceptions. They never say "hey, try this guitar or this amp, it might be more what you're looking for" or "check this out, it sounds fantastic". Never have I had that experience here, ever. The tech department guys are drones - THEY MAY BE AMAZING AT GUITAR TECH - but forget about getting any creative suggestions or interest in trying to resolve something that isnt textbook. And forget about being treated like a fellow musician. But they are excellent robots. A shame, I like supporting the smaller shops etc. read more

The first thing that I do when I visit a town or city is to look for locally owned music stores. The first one that I visited when moving to Atlanta was Maple Street. Wonderful store with high quality well setup acoustic and electric instruments and knowledgable and friendly staff. They run a very good repair shop and have a set of talented teachers. I've purchased 4 guitars here (3 acoustics and 1 pre-owned electric). On acoustic side they carry Taylor, Collings, Martin and Lowden among others. Best classical guitar collection in the Southeast. I am an Atlanta native and have been playing guitar for almost 30 years and this is the best guitar store in the city. It doesn't have a real competitor, and so I brave the expressway commute to get there. It serves guitar players of every level. For example, after playing for many years, I got my high-end Lowden acoustic guitar here 15 years ago and I have never wanted another acoustic guitar to replace it because it is so awesome. But when my daughter wanted a starter electric guitar, and I had no idea what I should be looking for because it had been so long since I had started, the thoughtful, attentive, and ridiculously knowledgeable staff not only pointed me to the right one, they showed me how to string the guitar in a way that would be easiest on her and that would stay in tune. You ain't getting that at the big box stores or online. Like the store staff, the instructors in the teaching area are incredible. They serve a wide spectrum - from the beginner to the serious (and famous) professionals. No substitute folks. Get thee to Maple Street. read more

What an amazing guitar store. It's an acoustic guitarist's dream store. Non pretentious staff and a great selection of acoustics. They also carry every flavor of Elixir strings you need. As with most, if not all, mom & pop type stores, they have a limited inventory of amps and other electronics so unfortunately you'll have to go elsewhere but ya know, if you're gonna buy strings, accessories and even a new acoustic, I HIGHLY suggest these guys. I am new to the guitar and, though I don't live conveniently near Buckhead, I'd heard enough good things about this place to want to check it out. I was especially eager to view their collection of classical guitars, since those are by far the most difficult guitars to find in stores (the other stores I've checked usually only carry one or two low priced models of indifferent materials/quality). So I went to check it out, and when I first arrived, I was a little apprehensive: the sales associate at the register was busy with other customers, and I sort of hung around, worried that I would be unwelcome since I was obviously not there to buy a guitar or any other expensive gear. Wrong! From the back of the shop came the heavenly sound of someone playing the classical guitar like a champ. Turned out to be one of the owners (I wish I could remember his name). He came out and showed me the classical guitars, let me look at them, and even (under his supervision) allowed me to handle and play a very expensive, rare Robert Ruck guitar. I was afraid even to touch it, but he gave me advice on how to hold it best, where to position my fingers on the fretboard, and how to angle my hand over the strings. He also showed how they hand-pick and carefully inspect every guitar they sell. All this from a guy who knew I already had a guitar and couldn't afford to buy any of the classicals in his shop! (I did buy a spare set of nylon strings as a thank-you.) If you are a guitarist and you're looking for a new instrument, music lessons, or even to educate yourself on what makes a quality guitar, go to Maple Street Guitars. I brought an electric semi-hollow body guitar in because it was slowly driving me insane by going sharp if I played with conviction. The luthier, Jeff Henry, heard me out, identified the likely problem and a few other set-up issues, and over the course of a few days called whenever tweaks needed discussion. He never tried to push extra work on me and was genuinely interested in me getting the biggest bang for the buck. Ultimately, I got the guitar back, and it plays like dream. My impression is that these folks are in the business because they love it and live it, which is my favorite kind of place. In conclusion, yay! read more

I started playing guitar about 2 years ago on a cheap acoustic I got for Christmas. One Sat morning I went to Maple Street Guitars to see what I could learn about electric guitars. After just wandering in off the street the sales associate spent the better part of 2 hours telling me everything I could ever want to know about electric's...from the history of certain models to how pick-ups work to what is better for different styles of playing. The guitar I picked out was more than I had decided to spend, so I was prepared to settle on something cheaper just so I could start playing an electric that afternoon. But to my surprise, I was talked out of buying something that wasnt what I really wanted by the guy working at the store! When I finally agreed to not buy a guitar that day I promised him that I'd make sure & give him credit when I did come back to buy the guitar, being as that he'd spent an entire Sat morning with me wasting his time talking guitars. He laughed me off and said that wont be necessary because they dont work on commission. It was that moment that Maple Street Guitars made a life-long customer out of me. The sales-associate turned out to be the son of the "mom & pop" that own (and run) the store. Over the past 2 years Lindsay, George, Dave and all the others have accommodated me at every turn. They've offered guidance as I've built up my guitar collection, stood behind their products more than any other company I've ever worked with, and shared their years & years of experience with me. I've bought three (3) guitars from Maple Street, taken lessons from a handful of instructors that they work with and popped in on countless occasions to merely plug into an amp I cant afford or soak up whatever guitar knowledge I can that day. I'm leaving Atlanta soon and I'm sincerely going to miss having Maple Street Guitars at my disposal. I purchased an expensive ($4K) classic guitar three years ago. I have had troubles playing it since I bought it due too action issues. I brought it in about a year after purchase and let them know the issues. I was told my technique was the problem but a small amount of bone was added to the 6th string nut. I saw another guitar luthier recently who suggested I return to Maple Street. I did and this time George diagnosed the problem and then charged me $150 in repairs. read more

Great store and great staff! They did some repair/setup work for me awhile back but I had never purchased a guitar from them before. I recently went in to buy a new classical guitar and had an excellent experience. I dealt with George (believe George is the owner) and Lindsay who identified the best picks in my price range (and never attempted to upsell) for me to try out. I really liked being able to try the guitars out in a private room. For one thing, I don't play that well and didn't want everyone listening in. More importantly, it gave me the quiet I needed to be able to hear the subtle differences in the guitars and make the right choice for me. I really can't say enough about how great George and Lindsay were to deal with. They were very informative without in any way pushing me to buy. They have a wonderful selection in all price ranges. Moreover, you can tell they take pride in their stock. Unlike some guitar stores where the stock may hang around forever and be quite shopworn, the MSG instruments are well maintained, polished up and ready to go.
