Saturday morning January 28, 2017, around 1:00am. Place was brite and clean. Everything looked to be brand new. Waiter was friendly and food right out without delay. Ordered the chicken fingers and waffle fries with blue cheese dressing. The dressing was placed in a small plastic 2 ounce cup-like thing. Didnt have the color or consistency of blue cheese. Asked for ranch dressing instead. The ranch looked and tasted exactly like the ranch dressing you've come to expect. Didnt like the taste of the chicken strips. Came to the diner for breakfast with my children was extremely disappointed... number one they were out of spoons and hot chocolate. they had no correct silverware....there was hair and egg shells in our food. We were missing food from our order the manager came with the waitress to dispute the fact that we were missing bacon strips from our order and we were not paying for it it when it was missing.... she then decided that instead of taking off the whole order from the bill she would only remove one dollar. For me, it's hit or miss at this diner. I do enjoy having breakfast there. However, the lunch and dinner options are rather overpriced and the options I've had were just ok. I tend to get a slice of cheesecake often but it's not consistently made. Sometimes its excellent, other times it's bland. Service can be slow at times. The manager/business owner is very stoic and expressionless but I haven't encountered any rudeness from him. Most of the servers are friendly and attentive. Overall, the diner is ok. On December 31, 2016, myself and my boyfriend went to the Maplewood Diner for dinner. I ordered the Shrimp Scampi and he ordered the Turkey Meatloaf with cranberry. When our food came, I did not get my shrimp scampi instead I think I got either shrimp Marsala or shrimp Francesca. I told the waitress that this was not shrimp scampi and she insisted it was. The waitress came back and ask how was the food, I told her the food taste like it had either dish detergent or Clorox. She did nothing to rectify the problem other than to apologize and walk away. When I spoke to the Manager George F. (could not understand his writing) he said that it was a mix up with my order and another customer, he told the waitress to bring my food back and he would make my shrimp scampi, the waitress never said or did anything he told her. When I told him how the food tasted he apologize and took the blame. Whatever, he gave me a card with his signature for a free dinner. I told him I would not be back. He said the waitress was young and he did not want to yell at her. I told him that it has nothing to do with yelling. On January 1st, 2017 I ended up in the emergency room at St. Barnabas hospital with severe stomach pain. The doctor said it was a stomach virus, but my OPINION I HAD FOOD POISONING. Ive eaten from here twice since they've reopened. Both times were takeout, and both times the food was pretty good. I wanted to give a 3.5 star rating but Yelp doesn't have a "half star" option so I settled on 3. The place is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and the food is... well, like I said... Pretty good lol. I only have 2 complaints: I don't like that I had to spend 10 minutes cutting up my salad (huge chunks of veggie/meat). It kind of defeats the purpose of ordering out if I have to do all the work. And, they should really consider changing the takeout packaging. I tried to mix my salad, and the tin tray damn near folded in half (very thin/flimsy). Needless to say, my car floor owes me about $6.50 for half my lunch. That's all :) read more

That diner has a waitress named Patricia and she sucks. Attitude is terrible and she approached my family and I about her tip and how we should've left her more because she has to tip the bus boy and she was the bus boy. She also hand wrote her 20% tip on the receipt and added it to the total and that's not the restaurants policy. She proceeded to argue with us as we were paying the bill. I was speechless! read more

Came here at 4pm to grab a bite before working at night. Had a bowl of chicken noodle soup and chicken tenders with fries. The soup was definitely homemade had a nice savory flavor. The noodles were a good consistency without being chewy or soggy. Could've used more vegetables. The fries were nice and crunchy without being too greasy. Ordered via grubhub. The food was on time, but was very cold by the time it arrived. Very lazy place. I requested for them to add cheese to the shambled eggs and they only microwaved a slice on top. Hours later I received and email stating that they charged my card an extra dollar for the cheese. I also requested for them to add peppers and onions to the home fries and again instead of cooking it with the potatoes they just threw it on top. The food was also unseasoned and very bland. The decor, being recently renovated is very nice and the place is clean so far but they will never make it with the servers they have. Last Friday nite my friend and I went about 6. Dinner time. Not for this place. Totally empty. Servers standing around doing nothing but it took 10 minutes just to get our drinks and when they arrived the cokes were flat. Looked like dirty water! We ordered burgers, thinking who can screw up a burger. It had a weird taste to it. Also took 30 minutes to arrive to our table. I spoke to an older man in which I was told he was the manager and he just gave me a look did not say a word and just walked away! Ordered here twice on Uber Eats. The food is solid although the delivery time is a bit long (about an hour). I ordered a cheesesteak without peppers, onions, or mushrooms and got a wrap that had more of those than meat. Still the food is pretty good. Also it is very convenient that they are open late and have Uber Eats. The portions were pretty big. I liked the baked chicken parm. Will probably be ordering from here again. read more

This was my third time ordering from Maplewood Diner on Springfield in Newark, NJ. The first time the food was good but I received a different dessert from the one I ordered since the one I wanted was unavailable. The decision was made to give me something they considered comparable instead of offering me a substitution of choice or a refund on the item. Still, I decided it wasn't a major deal and ordered again. Everything went well the second time. I ordered from them a third time, today, and as the food was being delivered my cable was being installed so it was a bit of a hectic time. The tip for the driver ended up getting left behind on a table when my daughter grabbed the food which had already been paid on my credit card. What happened next was something I've never encountered in the countless dining experiences of my life. The diner called me about an hour after delivery to inform me that the driver was upset at not receiving a tip and that it was customary for me to do so and asked me why I had not done so. Now although my failure to tip was an oversight and not a slight, I still took exception to this as my understanding of tipping anyone, cab driver, waitress, delivery person, was an option based on service and not a requirement. On top of that I paid a $5 delivery fee. I was just astonished at the audacity of a restaurant to call a patron and berate them for not tipping. There will be no more orders from Maplewood diner to my home. read more

Considering the fact that I have to give a star in order to give a review, I chose 1 star when in all actuality they deserve NO star. I ordered food to be delivered and I received 1/2 of my order and the driver act as if he was too incompetent to under that. He demanded that I tip him and would not get off of my property until I did so. I called the diner to tell them that I do not have everything and the man is arguing me down saying that I do. After I assure him that I DONT he then says well next time I'll give you extra. How can anybody mess up breakfast food is beyond me? I ordered brioche French toast and it looked like someone just placed it in the toaster and then sprinkled cinnamon on top. So I explored Maplewood diner on Friday as it is the new diner In town. I am reading these comments on here and I tell u all that if you plan on attending this place to stay Farrr away. It was very upsetting.. The service was great but the food was terrible.. Ordered a Greek wrap and my husband ordered a Caesar salad. My Greek wrap was very soggy and the tziki sauce was very low quality and watered down ..The waitress asked for the manager to come over and the manager seemed very annoyed like it was our fault.. The waitress was very nice but if I'm paying my money I would like better service and not getting attitude .. I'm not sure if he's the owner but he is very rude in his demeanor. Gray hair older man.. when we clearly didn't eat any of the food and we go out to eat all the time and we never complain.. But NEVER AGAIN will we ever tend this place.. Rude management.. Nice waitresses.. And terrible food.. I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.. And before our food came out this same gray haired guy was yelling at one of his waitresses because another customer was complaining about their food .. He's obviously an unhappy man and is in the wrong business if he's not trying to please his customers. Came to this diner for breakfast, what I got was a display of pure disrespect. The so-called "owner" of this establishment, John, treats his staff like dogs and even threatened to not pay an employee in front of costumers. After a bickering match with one of the waiters, who was trying to leave slightly early (maybe 20 minutes), he displayed and act of aggression by throwing a hanger across the restaurant. I commented on the time to the owner and he also copped an attitude with me, saying "and who are you?" Um... a costumer. I left with a "have a nice day" and was met with a "keep up with the smart comments" a threat? Not sure. The food isn't great either. I got a soggy tasteless burger. The place had a different owner a few weeks ago. A kind old man who, when my order wasn't in stock, went and bought the ingredients himself. only with that man in charge again would I even think of eating here again. read more
