My husband's cousin gave us a package of venison bacon and venison bologna to try, so we'd know if that's where we want to take the 30lbs of fresh venison we have to get it processed into bacon and bologna. All I'm gonna say is "Woah!" and I'll be driving straight there on Monday with our venison. Neither meat was overly seasoned but just perfect in flavor and added fat. If you are looking for restaurant quality meats Maple Wood Meats is the place. Maplewood is a full service meat market and processing facility including fresh cuts of beef, pork, poultry, variety of fresh sausages including bratwurst, cured meats to include smoked bacon and hams. The market is very clean and the customer service was out of this world. The service was so great, that really that is what made me want to put in a review. You may pay a few pennies more for some of their products but it is SO worth it. Getting to Maplewood off of Hwy 29 can be a challenge. Just follow the signage. Let me start off with saying I have been using Maplewood for at least a decade for wild game processing. I first heard about them from a friend when asking who processes goose meat. I tried them back then, and haven't looked back. Firstly, Maplewood's service is top notch. The staff is very energetic and willing to help with a friendly smile. This place is a very well oiled machine. The only way to understand this is to visit. This year, I had the skinless, cheese wieners made. The best damn hot dogs I ever ate. Packaged to perfection, and I know it is reasonably priced, due to my experience making my own sausage/wieners. It is a lot of work and TIME. I have literally tried all the product they make, either wild or domesticated meats, and they are all done consistently and in an excellent manner. I attached the menu for this year. The only caveat is you need 10# to make a single item. I.E. why I had only one item made. Again, there really is no loser here, but to get/try several items, you are better off buying their domestic meat to try it. Trust me, when made with venison, it is even better!! It is fun coming here. There are so many meat and deli selections and free samples. It is a two hour drive for us but worth it. On a busy day you take a number. The person behind the counter stays with you through your whole shopping experience and will bring your basket to the checkout when you are done. The smoked pork Hocks are the meatiest I have ever purchased. Great lunch meats, sandwich spread, salads and cuts of meats. So much to choose from. Both fresh and frozen so bring a big cooler. One heck of a butcher shop. Here you can find a great selection of many fine cuts of fresh beef or pork and some frozen lamb and veal. You will also find a variety of lunch meat, sausages, meat sticks, fresh pizzas, and other preprepared food items ready for immediate cooking or consumption. Especially nice is that the prices here aren't too terribly expensive. For only being a meat store, this place is nearly ALWAYS PACKED (pardon the pun). They actually close at the end of a standard working person's normal working hours and are locking their doors promptly at 5:00 PM, so getting there during the middle of the week can be kind of tricky. Luckily, they're open until 6:00 PM on Thursdays, so plan ahead, get inside, and grab a number right away. Among many things that I like about this place, is their willingness to support special orders. I'm pretty picky when it comes to selecting meat products, so I just explain to the staff what I'm looking for and and my expectations of quality, and they are happy to oblige. They even brined a fresh boneless ham for me and sold it to me for me to smoke on my own at home. (I wanted to use my own smoking techniques on my own smoker.) Maplewood has a whole army of friendly people supporting this business. One platoon is busily helping customers getting what they want as fast as they can, while another platoon of meat processors keep the shelves stocked with fresh product. This meat market is awesome, and then some. It is hard to believe that anything this big could have such consistently good product throughout. After you have sampled some of their meat selections, it is easy to see why they have won so many awards. When you first walk in you will find a spacious retail store that is well lit and decorated in a very attractive and clean manner. You will quickly be overwhelmed by the large enclosed display case; over 80 feet in length and having everything from deli cuts, beans, and salads, to nearly every cut of pork, poultry, and beef you can imagine. Their shish kabobs are fantastic and we get those on occasion as a special treat, because they aren't cheap. But they are soooo good, marinated to perfection and they grill up as a complete meal. They are generally very busy and operate off a ticket number system that you can grab from the dispenser at the meat counter as you come in. Once your number is called, the person that is serving you will stay with you and wrap and pack your items in a basket behind the counter until you have completed your order. At that time they will walk your basket over to the checkout counter so that you can pay for your items with one of the cashiers. I like to go in and take a quick perusal of the meat selections to see what tickles my fancy at the moment and to see what flavor or variety of brats they might have on display at that moment. Once I've gotten the current lay of the land, I'll grab my ticket number and take another closer look at the display case to finalize in my head what I'm going to ask for when my number gets called. Prices are ungodly high. Went in there for country style ribs and brisket. The country style ribs were twice the price of other butcher shops. I went up to Pelkins in Crivits and got them for half the price. The brisket price was absolutely unrealistic. Pelkins was 6.99 a pound. Maplewood Meats wanted 16.19 a pound! I went to Snake River Farms online and had a waygu brisket delivered cheaper. Seems being the only meat shop in Green Bay, has made Maplewood figure they can do anything they want with prices. I've died and gone to bacon heaven! If you are ever in the area and have nothing to do for a few minutes to an hour, please do yourself a favor and stop by this place. The people are friendly and they know their meats. This meat market has it all and not just the best cuts of meat, but also a great local selection of baked good, handmade jams, syrups, and even fresh meat snacks for your pup. My favorite are the Danish Kringles if there are any left. Upon discovering this place, I had every intention of buying maybe some brats or a pack of weiners....low and behold I walked out with over 8lbs. of meat and other assorted treats, including: a 4lb. english pot roast; 2lbs. of their prize winning brats; 2lbs. of local weiners; and a few danish kringles. Every Saturday morning, we have a ritual. Hit the coffee shop, maybe stop at the local bakery for a donut and then head the 14 miles across Brown County to hit Maplewood Meats. There, we nab all of the proteins for the week and usually something delicious for lunch later that day. Then we head to the grocery store where we do the rest of our shopping. Yes, our grocery store has its own meat department, but once you shop Maplewood, you'll never want to touch grocery store meat departments again. Maplewood's meat counter stretches into the distance like a gleaming altar for some carnivorous religion. Amazing steaks, fantastic roasts and the best ground round that you've ever tasted. I haven't eaten grocery store hamburger in a decade and that was way before we ever knew about pink slime: just looking at the stuff and then looking at Maplewood's ground beef is the only proof you need that something at the grocery store just isn't right. And the prices are about the same as the grocery store too: steaks are between$7-12 lb and the best, leanest ground round is about $4 lb. I've had friends from Chicago walk in and lose their minds when they saw the exceptional marbling in the New York Strips combined with those budget prices. The quality behind this business is apparent from the moment you walk in the door. It's no surprise that they've won award after award, between the meat smoking and their beef sticks and their fantastic cuts of prime. Like another reviewer said, there are many great offerings here. We usually get the ground round and some tenderloin tips, combined with anything that looks really good -- if they have skirt steak, that's an automatic. Then we head down to the smoked stuff and pick up a pound of regular beef sticks (just the right amount of heat) or maybe some garlic summer sausage. Their soups are out of this world and the deli selection can't be beat. Thumbs up on the breakfast sausages and the hot dogs too. Be sure to stop by during the county fair season: they usually buy up the FFA lambs and I tell you, that is the best lamb you'll ever taste in your entire life. Better than Whole Foods quality and half the price. Word of warning: Do everyone a favor and make sure that you know what you want BEFORE you pull the ticket. It's usually so crowded that it's difficult to get to the counter to see what they have, so stand back and peruse before you draw that number, because once your number is called, you need to be ready with your next choice by the time the lady finishes wrapping. The most surprising thing about this place is that everything is reasonably priced. I have been going here for years and it only gets better with time. You can get high quality meats and deli products for great prices. I love that they have the option of fresh or frozen here. This way you can get your steaks fresh and pick up a frozen packet of brats or chicken for later in the week. I highly recommend you stop in. This is the best place to buy meat in Green Bay. Their lunchmeat is outstanding, was happily surprised to see sliced cheese in the deli this past weekend. Package of hamburger patties were bad; had to throw out; the two steaks we got were not any better than getting at the local grocery store.
